Whaa? Bond acting like one of the few grown-ups in his party?

Retiring Republican Sen. Kit Bond Will Back Sotomayor

Sen. Kit Bond (R-MO) just announced that he will support Judge Sotomayor’s nomination to the Supreme Court, explaining that “my choice for President did not win the last election, and…our people’s democracy has spoken for the change and they are getting it.” ”Elections,” says Bond, “do have consequences.” Bond joins six other Republicans in defying his party’s base to support President Obama’s nominee.

Bond’s willingness to break from his fellow conservatives may flow from his plans to retire from the Senate at the end of his current term. A coalition of prominent right-wing activists, led by disgraced computer hacker Manuel Miranda, delivered a letter to minority senators demanding that they filibuster Judge Sotomayor just one week after her nomination was announced.

Right-wing attack dog Ed Whelan recently warned that conservative senators who do not share his views on judges “may discover that the next elections they face have unwelcome consequences for their political careers.” With no risk of a primary challenge in his future, however, Bond apparently feels comfortable voting his conscience, instead of the right wing’s “white voter strategy.”

13. It will be when the republicans want it to be done. Reid doesn't want to offend them. nt

2. More and more will I predict 70 votes

A vote against Sotomayor is a really stupid vote for a Republican.

They have to show that they vote with the President every once in a while or lose all credibility with moderates.

Voting against Sotomayor is unnecessarily aggressive against hispanics for no reason

3. It will be less than 70
There are already 30 republicans that have said no -- and Republicans Gregg, Murkowski, and Voinovich are still uncommitted.

And site too has 30 against too (Barrasso and Enzi haven't be updated to the no column yet)

9. I'm going to stick with at least 68.

Wikipedia's a bit out of date, but Barrasso and Enzi are no surprise.

Glad to see Senator Pryor finally made up his mind about something.

15. If they haven't announced opposition by now they are unlikely to do so

I would not be surprised to see a couple from the states with large Hispanic populations reconsider their vote.

16. Well...
Barrasso(R) did not state his opposition until today on the senate floor.
We still have four hours of speeches today and more speeches tomorrow.
So, there is still time for the remaining three uncommitted republicans to oppose.

8. Per Wikipedia, that's 59 support, 28 oppose.
Edited on Wed Aug-05-09 01:14 PM by Nyquil Man
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonia_Sotomayor_Supreme_Court_nomination#Senate_voting

Democrats (60):
Support - 52 (86.7%)
Oppose - 0 (0.0%)
None - 8 (13.3%)

Republicans (40):
Support - 7 (17.5%)
Oppose - 28 (70.0%)
None - 5 (12.5%)

Of the outstanding Republicans, I'd expect George Voinovich and Judd Gregg to be the most likely to support.

Assuming the Democrats remain solid (and it's worth noting that my own senators, the Bobbsey Twins Pryor and Lincoln, are doing their usual fencesitting routine) and the Republicans continue to break as they are breaking now, I'd expect Sotomayor to get at least 68 votes to confirm.

She's in like Flynn.

EDIT: Thanks to a better source posted in this thread, I see the number is now 60-30.

11. Sotomayor should have more than enough votes,
at least 65-66 if neither Byrd nor Kennedy are present, at least 67-68 if they are.

24. To be confirmed, yes. But it's always good to have enough votes
to avoid a filibuster attempt.

17. Crazy
Who would think Bond a relable conservative and who Is Retiring Is voting for her but Mccain a so called Maverick running for
reelection In a senate with Hispanic Voters would vote against her.

Of course we all know the Mccain who voted with Bush 90 percent of the time Is the real Mccain and the so called Maverick Mccain was
the false Mccain.

Keeping ailenating the Hispanic voters Republicans.Obama will get even higher percent of Hispanic Voters In 2012.

18. The right wing shit-stirrers
should realize that they are being had by McCain and the others who are voting no. They know there are no consequences whatsoever since they know there are enough votes to confirm without them. It's totally a fake ploy. They get to make there most rabid supporters happy with no consequences to the confirmation.

What a buncha suckers. :eyes:

22. UPDATE
There will be more speeches Thurs. starting at 10am ET.
Then the VOTE will be at 3pm ET, Thursday.

-----
The ones that have not publicly committed yet are:

Begich – D
Byrd – D
Conrad – D
Levin – D
Lincoln – D
Voinovich – R

The count so far is:

Support – 63
Oppose – 31
Uncommitted – 6
-----

p.s. Note on Begich (D-AK)
Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, has not indicated how he will vote on Sotomayor, but he is one of several uncommitted senators going into tomorrow’s vote. He is unlikely to make his decision public until the actual vote, his office said. Like Murkowski, Begich said he also made it clear to Sotomayor how important Second Amendment freedoms are to the people they represent in Alaska.
