A film by Thomas Keith, PH.D

Despite the achievements of the women's movement over the past four decades, misogyny remains a persistent force in American culture. In this important documentary, Thomas Keith, professor of philosophy at California State University-Long Beach, looks specifically at misogyny and sexism in mainstream American media, exploring how negative definitions of femininity and hateful attitudes toward women get constructed and perpetuated at the very heart of our popular culture.

The film tracks the destructive dynamics of misogyny across a broad and disturbing range of media phenomena: including the hyper-sexualization of commercial products aimed at girls, the explosion of violence in video games aimed at boys, the near-hysterical sexist rants of hip-hop artists and talk radio shock jocks, and the harsh, patronizing caricatures of femininity and feminism that reverberate throughout the mainstream of American popular culture.

Along the way, Generation M forces us to confront the dangerous real-life consequences of misogyny in all its forms - making a compelling case that when we devalue more than half the population based on gender, we harm boys and men as well as women and girls.

1. Thank you for posting that.
I refuse to see movies that revolve around the murder or assault of a woman.

I'm a white woman in my mid-50s.

I also hate it that all women are supposed to be tall, slim and NEVER wear glasses.

I'm short and not skinny and I have worn glasses since I was six years old. I literally cannot navigate past the bathroom without them, so that is non-negotiable.

I was taught to defer to men and their opinions, although I was only praised for being smart and never got praised for my appearance. I always felt like I must look like a frog, because I did not have many dates until I got to college, because I was too smart to be popular. And in college I had lots of dates with smart boys, and I wore jeans and t-shirts. My mother got mad because she wanted me to dress up and wear makeup. I refused to do that because I thought if you were feminine, you were weak and powerless.

As a result of not being told to assert myself, I dated lots of men with bad attitudes, who criticized everything, including me. I finally got nagged into a serious illness and physical collapse which took me about seven or eight years to recuperate fully from.

I also thought that "stupid stuff men do" is normal. Only after I was grown did I find out it had a name -- date rape.

6. You and me both, sister! "I thought if you were feminine, you were weak and powerless."

I could identify with a lot you said. Great post.

2. The fashion-industrial complex has a hold on us like the MIC. And it doesn't only affect women.
Young guys get told that if they rather stay at home and read books instead of getting out and doing stupid shit in a cool vehicle and "getting laid" there is something wrong with them.

"When war is profitable you will see alot more of it"

When making people feel inferior is profitable, expect alot of that as well.

Conservatives have it wrong when they blame the "valuelessness of the Hippie generation" for it, when the root cause is much likely to be Capitalism.

for the most part, we had GREAT values...Non-materialism, "love and Peace"

..Porn was NOT one of our values*

I remember in fact, having a conversation with a male friend in which he said "Pornography is of the older generation, not ours" and that was largely true.

*Some exceptions..Comix -- Mr. Natural, for one, could be pervert..and by "pervert" I'm talking child abuse...I can explain it in detail for any skeptics here.

3. I'm seeing more and more misogyny in DU posts here every day
and the moderators seem just fine with it. They won't allow racism, but bald faced hatred of women is condoned and accepted on DU. I fucking hate it; it makes me wonder if I belong here anymore. I've seen posts calling women a "human sub species" "dumb bitches" "worthless whores", men who even speak in support of domestic abuse. You name it. Misogyny is NOT a liberal value!

9. Thank you Lorien....
I'm glad to see someone speak up on the issue of mysogyny here at DU and I am really happy to see this movie. I look forward to finding it. I'm sure that I will have to buy it.

It seems that the more things change;the more they stay the same. I am so tired of this. I have been talking about this subject for 50 years and nothing seems to change. As long as there is money to be made from young women and young men; they will be brainwashed with the same poison generation after generation.
