Maria Bartiromo Presses 44-Year-Old Congressman: If Medicare Is So Good, Why Aren't You On It? (VIDEO)

Huffington Post | Nico Pitney

Earlier today, MSNBC's Carlos Watson hosted Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) and CNBC anchor Maria Bartiromo for a discussion on health care.

At one point, Bartiromo was critical of the government-managed health care system in the United Kingdom. "How do I know the quality is not going to suffer" with a public option? she asked.

Rep. Weiner reminded her that there already is government-managed health care in the United States -- namely, Medicare, the system created for Americans 65 years and older -- and that patients with Medicare report very high satisfaction rates.

Bartiromo's response to this argument was a true head-scratcher. In a mocking tone, she pressed the congressman: "How come you don't use it (Medicare)? You don't have it. How come you don't have it?"

Rep. Weiner, who turns 45 this week, tried to walk Bartiromo through it. "Because I'm not 65." But she was insistent. "Yeah... c'mon!" she exclaimed, laughing incredulously.

Green light for bowel cancer drug

Bowel cancer is a common form of the disease
Campaigners have hailed a decision to give NHS approval for a drug which can extend life expectancy for people with advanced bowel cancer.
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) reversed a previous decision to block NHS use of Erbitux on cost effectiveness grounds.
It follows an agreement by maker Merck to cut the price of the drug by 16%.
Erbitux will now be offered to some patients whose cancer has spread to their liver.

We hope that this positive ruling by NICE heralds a new era in the treatment of the disease
Ian Beaumont
Bowel Cancer UK
It is estimated that at least 2,000 patients a year in the UK could benefit.

Jon Stewart was Weiner's roommate in college, so I'm sure he'll have something to say about this when TDS comes back.

4. He was great k*r
One question to ask her when she mouths off, "So Maria, how about all those mistakes you and CNBC made
on the economy and stocks. Why should anybody listen to you."

Her gratuitous comment about "class war" was ridiculous too.

She has no talent but she's obviously been "chosen" since she showed up at the DAVOS confab where the
media tools rub shoulders with the robber barons.

Just watch the faces she makes and you realize that she's there for some reason other than talent.

Weiner handles himself very well.

10. She should have taken a longer pause
and thought it through.

But she is on to something. In the UK, the government would say "no, it's too expensive". But here in the US, your insurance provider would say "oh, don't worry about the expense. We got your back". :sarcasm:

17. While we are shocked by this, she represents a LOT of Americans.
They have no idea how the system works. All they know is a few scary sound bites that they have heard on Beck or read in some moronic email.

Actual knowledge and information is foreign to them.

but when things get delved into deeper, she shows she has no FLIPPIN CLUE what she's talking about. "OEEEH!" she says when he gets done... like, dammit, my talking points said to say this, but I don't know what to say to that.

She made the big gaffe and just kept blabbing, trying to muddy the waters.

I am so glad Rep Weiner is getting out there. Wish more of the Dems would be invited to speak out so boldly.

Edited to add that I loved Rep Weiner's saying he'd love to have Medicare, it is a great, successful program which people love, but he's not 65 yet. Loved that solid endorsement of the public-private program we all want as our single payer-- Medicare for All who choose it.
