2. The problem with solar panels isn't old versus new. |

It's the cost of the initial investment. I was all up for it until I saw the 47K pricetag for a savings that doesn't payoff for 30 years.

3. i was willing to pay $30-40,000, but when |
|
i checked it was going to cost me $154,000 -- about $75,000 after tax rebates. at age 68 that's a lot of money to put into a house. mine would have paid off after 20 years.

4. Hell, I'm a working professional and a young family man. |
|
We don't have a ton of cash after mortgage and bills. We can barely save until my wife goes back to work and even then childcare is going to be a bear.
47K is not something I have lying around...paid off after 20 years or not.

6. As far as I can tell it's an economies of scale thing from the manufacturing end. |
|
The installation itself isn't orbital...it's the equipment itself.
The manufacturing of the panels has a high proportion of work that can only be done manually...or at least so I have seen when watching a video on the creation of solar panels a month or so ago.
As a result they can't assembly line them and they can't mass-produce them at an efficient price.
