...about the Spanish-speaker at the town hall in CT, we on the left are part of this problem when we fail to put aside our own anger and see these groups with at least a modicum of basic human respect. So far on this thread, I have seen responses calling them assholes, Nazis, subhumans, fuckwads, etc. Certainly, it is understandable to feel righteous outrage at their poor behavior; however, to dehumanize them in the process, is no more ethical of us.

There are many, but MANY different slices of working- and poverty-class groups of many different ethnicities, faiths and upbringings in the US; and one thing in common among them is that they are ALL being let down by the left just as surely as they are being manipulated and conned by the right. There is no longer even the scraps of a viable Labor movement in the US. Progressivism has been narrowed down to a rather exclusive, openly-classist segment of privileged academics; and to fail to admit this basic fact, is to be willfully blind to the reality that the working class is being abandoned and spat on by the very people who should be out there in the streets and town-halls talking to them, educating them, putting aside anger and doing what it takes to REACH them one mind at a time. Who is out there fighting to get the truth out to them? Nobody; we're all here smugly talking about their intellectual inferiority like so many Victorian-era British paying twopence to go laugh at the patients in the madhouse.
