People Protest Outside Sick Twisted Baptist Pastor Steven L. Anderson Who Says He Wants President Obama To Die - 09/07/09

I'm really glad to see that CNN aren't letting this one go. If Glenn Beck (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x8632338">Faux/big oil) can bring down Van Jones with such ease, how come we're letting this nasty scum still preach his evil shit when he could be arrested for sedition/inciting domestic terrorism?

1. The people
are the absolute scum; the fringe of the fringe of the fringe of absolute whack job crazies, and I am glad that they will not be interviewing him. There isn't even any reason to argue with these people, its just a waste of time. It would be like arguing with a brick wall. He deserves no audience. All he deserves are those protesters outside his "church" and maybe a "friendly" little visit from the Secret Service.

3. I thought I read somewhere that the Secret Service did pay him a visit.
Is it better to just ignore these creeps and not give them the attention they so desperately want or to draw attention to their idiocy?

16. Oh hell no!
Obama does NOT need to reach out to these haters. You got that right.

I listened to an interview with the preacher. He claims that he is being persecuted by the feds due to that border incident where he went and got himself tazered.

I am so sick of these right wing whackos getting media attention. They are VILE and in no way represent the majority. I feel like throwing a fit. Right now. Why the frack give them so much attention? Media darlings. :argh:

5. Since when does Obama have to make an agreement with a RW nutso minister? What
power does this person actually have to be bargaining with the leader of the free world?

8. it is NOT inciting domestic terrorism
for fucks' sake, would people actually be knowledgeable of THe Law (tm) before opining on it?

what this person said was heinous and disgusting, but NOT illegal.

and that is why he is not being arrested. because (fortunately) the attorney general, the justice department, the secret service etc. know the law a LITTLE bit better than you.

17. The Law
Under current http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi?dbname=107_cong_public_laws&docid=f:publ056.107.pdf">United States law, set forth in the USA PATRIOT Act, acts of domestic terrorism are those which: "(A) involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State; (B) appear to be intended— (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and (C) occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States."

know damn well that this does not fall under that law.

sorry, but only under the most ridiculous interpretation of coercion/intimdation would this be considered a violation.

again, get real.

read the sections you bolded:(B) appear to be intended— (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion;

first of all, how could praying for obama's death be seen as INTENDED TO INTIMIDATE OR COERCE A CIVILIAN POPULATION?

that's abusrd.

or INTENDED TO INFLUENCE THE POLICY OF THE GOVT by INTIMDATION OR COERCION

again, ridiculous

RIGHT of people to use "hate speech"

hate speech is protected by our 1st amendment. this protection of hate speech contrasts with most of the EU, canada, the UK, etc.

iow, we are different. we have a higher protection of free speech.

i do not defend the CONTENT of the hate speech. i defend the right to spew it. for people of any political persuasion, whether i disagree or agree

it's called freedom

fwiw, the ACLU defended the right of the nazis to march in skokie. they did NOT defend the CONTENT of the nazis hate. only the right to publically spew it.

i abhor this person's speech,i think he is disgusting.

i have also recently defended the right of the ELF spokesman to report on their crimes, despite another poster's belief that this made him an "accessory" under the law (which is patently ludicrous)

i think ELF is a bunch of disgusting terrorists. but their website is perfectly legal (its called free speech) as is their spokesman;'s action.

i HATE ELF.

but i am also disgusted that a person on this board, or any american for that matter, does not respect the 1st amendment and our cherished freedoms

22. Coercion & Intimidation
Edited on Tue Sep-08-09 06:52 AM by Turborama
Are these "ridiculous interpretations"?

If you don't agree with these definitions you can take it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Coercion

Predatory
The purely selfish kinds of coercion are a form of predatory behaviour by the coercing party, whose aim is to narrow down the scope of other people’s actions so as to make them instrumental to its own personal interests. According to many social philosophers, this sort of predatory behaviour will become the prevailing one.

Religious
The most ancient, extensive and durable kind of thought coercion has concerned religion. Religious coercion is a subset of predatory coercion, in which the selfish entity is a supernatural one.

"Terrorizing" generally means to cause alarm, fright, or dread in another person or inducing apprehension of violence from a hostile or threatening event, person or object. “It is not requisite, in order to constitute this crime, that personal violence should be committed.”
http://www.lectlaw.com/def2/t021.htm

Again:
appear to be intended— (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion

It's not good enough to say that the "freedom of speech allows this sort of behavior" when we're talking about threats to our President's life, are you saying we have to wait until an assassination actually occurs before "inciting" can be proved? Pre-emptively arresting this lunatic to set a precedent in the law would help define the above quote from the Patriot Act. You do know that one of his parishoners went to Obama's town hall the next day armed with an assault rifle, don't you? Not in itself illegal, but it definitely caused alarm.

23. yes
they are. do you read ANY case law.

of course not.

simply put, praying for the president's death, does not meet the legal definition, not to mention the "true threat" standard or the standards under brandenberg.

sorry, but this is what happens when people with an agenda and NO legal understanding kneejerk into a conclusion.

get real. the SS are not idiots, nor is the justice dept.
