Many people have praised you for voicing your opinion from the South, Alabama in particular. As if that could ever happen? I am not surprised at all, but I’m still proud to see you say it.

I am a child of the South as well. Both of my parents hail from Columbus, MS. It’s near the AL border so there are relatives there as well. I was an Air Force brat so I spent a whole lot more of my time elsewhere in the USA and the world than Alabama, but we always went home to my grandparents in MS.

I didn’t really get to know Alabama until my freshman year of college at Samford University way back in ’73. Even though it was a Southern Baptist school, the only thing that could be held against you was your whether or not you yelled “War Eagle” or “Roll Tide.” I couldn’t care less or give a hoot. I was there as a piano major.

Thankfully, that led me to discover a local community theatre group in B’ham. That’s where I met my first Jews, Gays and potheads. I also met the love of my life whose father was an OBGYN with UAB that would perform an abortion. Not on demand, but with medical counseling. They had crosses burned on their front lawn in Mountain Brook.

Even then the media was controlled. We could not see a PBS presentation about the death of a Saudi Princess because a hometown construction firm was involved with the Saudis and had the clout to suppress it. We moved to NYC by the end of ’81. I’ve been here ever since. There’s more than a few of us here in NYC and still there AL.

Keep it up, man. You have to live your life in this country no matter where you are.

And yes, you do make me proud. Keep on telling it like it is.

What you said about Christianity being pushed is absolutely true, and it took a great deal of courage to say so. I live in a very different neck of the woods - Northern Maine, Stockholm (though I'm moving to Sandiego in about a week, finally, no more snow) and here we have the same issues.

Stand by your principles, I have found that where I live, in Aroostook County, nearly everyone I know assumes that every standard of morality must come from some form of religious belief. This is simply not true. We all form our own principles and opinions throughout our lives through experience, through trial, through our individual abilities of reasoning.

The Preacher has an agenda - and to be fair, perhaps he truly believes the BS he says. Perhaps he sees it as his duty from God to protect the children from a man he has mistakenly categorized as an evil socialist. It simply rocks my mind that people can be so ignorant.

Keep in mind that most likely this Preacher and those like him are ignorant rather than cruel or stupid (though of course, there are exceptions). I don't say that to excuse him - only in the hopes that your fighting the good fight will continue and that you won't become bogged down with hatred or bitterness. Regardless of our agendas, as various as they may be, the way to victory is through reason and compassion. This seems to be something that many of the worlds religiously minded people and political leaders have forgotten, or never learned, or simply do not care about.

I applaud your speech, your courage, and your candor. Keep up the good work and never doubt that there are hundreds, thousands, millions, who feel as you do and are working towards similar goals. Never forget that you are appreciated and respected - and that you may find like minded individuals in the places where you least expect them.
