4. which asshole? but yes, Stossel sued the wrestler, IIRC, for permanent damages
which IMHO was false litigation. Stossel seems fine now, and did right after the trial.

again, this is my recollection, it was a long time ago.

27. Feh
I don't hope for assholes to bring charges up like this. Note that this video interview was faded into. We have no idea what Stossel said leading up to it.

I am not in favor of violence, but I am very much in favor of slapping the hell out of John Stossel.

8. It's Stossel...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Schultz_(professional_wrestler)

Assault on John Stossel
Schultz had an notorious encounter on December 28, 1984 with 20/20 reporter John Stossel while Stossel was backstage at Madison Square Garden doing a story about professional wrestling's secrets. During an interview Stossel told Schultz that he thought pro wrestling was fake and Schultz's response was to slap Stossel twice, knocking him to the floor each time. Between each slap, Schultz said, "That's an open hand slap. Is that fake?" The attack, which attracted a large amount of media coverage, was later aired on national television (as well as currently appearing on websites such as YouTube including ABC News which reported that the network had received more than 1,000 calls from viewers inquiring about Mr. Stossel's health.
Marvin Kohn, a deputy commissioner at the New York State Athletic Commission, had been present at the arena during the incident and immediately suspended Schultz for his actions. Although called by Commissioner Jose Torres to come to a hearing before the Commission, Kohn later reported that Schultz had written a letter to the commission admitting "that he had acted improperly and apologized both to the commission and to Mr. Stossel" and further stated "I intend the commission to know that I did not intend to hurt John Stossel. I apologize to the commission and to John Stossel."
Stossel later claimed he was unaware of Schultz's apology and would pursue his action in court although commented he would be "less likely to sue" if the after-effects of his injury disappeared.<7> However, Stossel eventually filed a lawsuit against the World Wrestling Federation, and settled out of court for $425,000.<8>
Although he has consistently maintained that World Wrestling Federation officials told him to hit Stossel, Schultz was fired. Many industry insiders believe, it was not because of his actions against Stossel, rather, Schultz was fired for challenging Mr. T to a fight backstage at a WWF show at Madison Square Garden,<9> even though the assault may have helped to end his wrestling career.

12. Oh, Okay...
...I was in junior high when I saw this, so my memory must be a little fuzzy.

Funny thing is I already knew wrestling was fake by then. :-)

6. I remember seeing this back when it first aired ....
Edited on Fri Sep-11-09 08:25 AM by hadrons
it seemed more brutal then ... I seem to remember the clip being longer and Stossel was sobbing (something I wouldn't blame him for, Schultz was a brute) ... I was part of a 20/20 segment 2 years ago in which I was apart of a group interview (I didn't know it was for 20/20 until after I agreed to do it and I committed because the producer of the segment was super-nice lady) and his hearing seemed fine

7. Yeah, I remember that
I remember that being shown on 20/20 when it first aired. Afterwards Stossel was giving commentary about how he might have permanent ear damage, and blah blah blah. I thought it was hilarious.

Andy Kaufman needed to learn that, too.

Up next, he will investigate whether the Tooth Fairy is real. After that, whether his wife has fake orgasms.

And in opera, you still have to be able to sing.

This never gets old, and Stossel was asking for it IMO.

you don't insult someone to their face, especially someone you have already upset, and not expect them to react. duh.

19. If you ever wonder why Stossel turned to shilling for "the magic of the free market"...
...just keep that clip in mind. Pays a lot better, and never again did he get shit assignments like interviewing some muscle-bound dumbfuck aching to clock him in the head.
