"Only a Means to An End' - Obama's Speech & the Public Option

Forgive the goofy still pose and the black sides.....Video quality will be upgraded next time around. This is the first in my video series advocating for real health care reform.

This is me. I am sure my haters will love it!

5. We need to start calling this legislation what it really is. A Bailout for the health insurance..
Industry.
When Obama started talking about the health insurance industry being one sixth of our economy and we could not absorb its failing at this point.
It rang a bell. To big to fail. What better way to get us to fork over out tax dollars to the same industry that has killed many of our loved ones for its profit than a new
mandated insurance "reform". And we as the endless suckers we are are about to fall for it again.
While they are dangling the bright shiny public option in front of us meanwhile ALL the bills being written by congress have the mandate in them.
Now we are being told the public option will just be for a small percentage of the population.
Wow when will we ever learn.
great video by the way.

9. It's not a bailout. It's outright robbery!
You bailout shaky, insolvent companies. I don't see any shaky insurance companies, except for AIG.

Thank you. This was a great video and message. Is there anyway
to re-post it, so that more people (like me) can get an
opportunity to rec this? I tried and it said it was over 24
hours old. You had a common sense message and delivery. I
agree with everything you said and I am sure that the majority
of people (even "illegals!) do too. I think that it is so
ridiculous that Americans are flocking to other countries for
cheaper (and comparable) health care, yet, the pols (like
Wilson) want to make sure that any health care savings (which
I doubt, especially with only for-profits in the mix)are not
for immigrants. Our country has become an alien world since
Reagan. It didn't hurt that you were intelligent and easy on
the eyes. That sounds so sexist, sorry.

2. Just for me, I don't feel it ends the single payer debate...
Edited on Fri Sep-11-09 11:14 PM by GivePeaceAchance
Teddy Kennedy said I wouldn't support this man fro President if I didn't feel he was taking us towards single payer. The means to an end is toward single payer it's incremental but given how conservative some voters are that's how the journey there has to be. Single Payer won't happen this time around but definitely keep up the fight. It definitely shouldn't be mandated insurance unless the public option is available to all and subsidized for low incomes. Single payer itself ultimately has a price and with taxes being so contentious public option seems the easier sell. In the end it should be the finest health plan or nothing, if they can have th emost extravagant wars. The fight for a good health care system is about peace because when the humanity of caring for each other is expressed that can only translate internationally and move funds from death to health. Definitely keep on fighting for single payer though it's got final destination, we'd of faced a struggle for it even with a Kucinich in office, Congress is clearly a stubborn entity, but it can be pushed with enough force.

16. I think people were hoping this time around would be setting the table for single payer

With a strong public option....

Obama is doing the opposite. He is (barely) advocating for a tiny public option that is so small that it will be unable to offer any real competition to the insurance companies. The Republicans will be sure to point this out in making the case for why the government should not be involved in health care.

4. People don't necessarily like when the game is exposed.
And so I guess this will be unrecommended a lot....but that is just what she is doing...exposing the game.

6. People have not been fooled,
Although the speech was pretty blatantly a handover totally to the private industry of not only what they already had, but even more. She is right.

Obama was against madates and fines during the primaries, except for children, he said when pressed. He is showing a disturbing trend of being for against something (the Fisa Bill) before he is for it.

How on earth did they come to allow the Insurance Industry to write a healthcare bill and have gall to present to present it to the people? I know two college students right now who have no health insurance because they cannot afford it. They work and go to college at night. If they are forced to pay a premium, they will have to drop out of college as that money, $400.00 a month or more, may as well be one million dollars.

I don't know what these Democrats are thinking, but it is not about the people.

Nice summary, will look for your next video.

10. K&R.
I saw Romneycare coming down the pike as soon as he started talking. Not acceptable.

I would do anything to get away from private insurance. I can imagine what their cheapest, mandated policies will look like. It most likely won't cover much of anything, and if you're really sick, you'll wind up bankrupt anyway.

12. knr. good job!! Looking forward to your next installment.
Those of us who want comprehensive, affordable, integrated, and unfragmented healthcare for all continue to have an uphill struggle. Obama can try to wow us with his oratory style, but the content and commitment is lacking from a progressive point of view.

Please view the Jane Hamsher interview with Cenk on The Young Turks if you haven't seen it. More horrifying information/perspective on why liberal/progressive groups (and policies) have been stymied by this administration.

I was ultimately disappointed. The positives from the speech were debunking of some myths. However, the position that medicare needs trimming and we will get mandated private insurance which is the problem with our system in the first place is a backwards approach I do not agree with and gives creedence to rightwing talking points.

20. I Look Forward To "More" Of You! I'm Lost In A Sea Of Cheer-leaders Here
at DU! Thank you so much for what you are trying to do, time is slipping away and we ARE NOT getting anything NEAR what I think Obama talked about as he campaigned before his election!

Cheer-leading practice is OVER... it's now time to pick the REAL TEAM! But we are up against a mountain, and I no longer think Obama is the one who will deliver!! Nor our elected officials!

Pretty speeches are nothing more than pretty speeches and I REFUSE to bow down simply because THEY SAY IT IS SO!! I do fear that the MONEY they have will drown out our voices, but then I live in Florida and getting drowned out is a "way of life!" I'm just so used to it and wonder if there is a SLEEPING Giant somewhere who will be able to help us!!

Thanks again!!

21. I know what you mean. It's hard to take care of things
which need to be done in our lives while continually fighting for real change from what we have all been through. In my blog, I called this http://americancommentary.wordpress.com/2009/09/10/the-largest-corporate-welfare-bill-in-u-s-history-quite-possibly-so-the-health-care-reform-bill-is-corporatism-to-its-core/">corporatism. The only thing I know what to do on the health care situation is to keep fighting for single payer strongly in order to maybe at least change their position to a real public option.
