Ann Coulter Loses It, Calls Elizabeth Edwards A "Harridan"
By Greg Sargent | bio

Boy, it looks like the pressure from Elizabeth Edwards is really getting to Ann Coulter. Seems to be really rattling her badly. Give this a watch, from MSNBC this morning:

Woah.

Incidentally, the Coulter column she plugged here as "one of the greatest columns ever written" is the one where she suggested that John Edwards was politically exploiting his own son's death and using it like a "bumper sticker."

Update: John Aravosis really takes Coulter apart. Key quote:

She walks around calling people "fags," mocking their dead children, wishing that they were murdered, then when people respond by saying "uh, you're kind of mean," Ann flips out over the level of venom that's directed against her.
His full takedown here. --> http://www.americablog.com/2007/06/watch-ann-coulter-lose-it.html

34. Seems like practically everything she attributes to her "enemies" is pure projection
Even her book titles. Just think about it:

"High Crimes & Misdemeanors" (what she accused the last administration of committing!)
"Slander"
"Treason"
"Godless

And every time she has an opportunity for public "dialogue" with or about someone who disagrees with her she is as transparent as plastic wrap.

And did you notice how she trumpets her "top 10 bestseller" books? Not without the help of rightwing funding buying thousands of copies for her even before those books come out!

45. That's also one of the results of Coulter surrounding herself with.....
sycophants (who undoubtable tell her she's great), and the fact that she never does any real debating. I think her isolation is why Coulter often seems genuinely unaware of how awful she comes across among sane people. She seemed quite rattled when Elizabeth Edwards was talking to her, despite her attempts to look cool, and she sounds hysterical here.

if you think its getting tiresome for you, think about the rest of us.

It is sad really. She is smarter than this, but like Don Rickles saying "You hockey puck" for the 1,398th time, its got old, stale, and its tired.

Sad to say, when all is said and done, America is a worse place for her, American democracy is a poorer thing for her, and none of us are any better off. Time to retire.

Edited on Thu Jun-28-07 02:27 PM by RufusTFirefly
We are giving her exactly what she wants (and, paradoxically, I am contributing to the problem).
The more that Coulter becomes the bete noire of the Left, the more she's embraced as the darling of the Right.
Her personal cash register is going "ka-ching, ka-ching!"

52. Well I say let the right embrace her as their darling...
And let the public see just who the Republicans are embracing.

I mean honestly, how many people do you think this pile of trash is going to win over to the Republican side.

Embracing her is like embracing a giant pile of elephant shit, you can wrap your arms around the pile but when you do so you get shit all over your shirt and not too many people want to give you a hug.

The reason you cite for ignoring Coulter is actually a good reason to give her all the attention she wants.

Edited on Fri Jun-29-07 06:39 PM by JDPriestly
I say, thank you to Elizabeth Edwards for talking straight to Ayn Rand Coulter.

It's the media that needs to ignore her. We should turn off the TV when she comes on (I can't because I'm not watching in the first place) and e-mail the network that we have done so. That is how the right wing gets our legitimate spokespeople and shows off the air. They protest and take action.

If we want to restore decent dialog to our political interactions, Ayn Rand Coulter and a number of others of her type need to be ignored -- by the media. She should be allowed to say what she wants but not given as much billing as she now gets. It is irresponsible.

Remember Kennedy, John then Robert, Martin Luther King and the many other liberal leaders who were assassinated supposedly by their fellow Americans. Remember the anthrax sent to our leaders in the Congress and to what apparently were perceived as left-leaning news media. The kind of hate Ayn Rand Coulter spews can have serious repercussions. That is because her admiring audience includes a sufficient number of violence-prone crazies who actually take her at her word. The left has had its share of such types, including the people who kidnapped the Hearst daughter, but I don't think that crazies are attracted to the current movement that the press views as left. And no person on the left who talked like Ayn Rand Coulter would get time on TV. Neither the right nor the majority of the left would put up with such a person. If a "leftie" talked like Ayn Rand Coulter, we would all be the first to protest and shun him/her.

16. The last time I watched Ann Coulter was the LAST TIME I watched Ann Coulter
She was being interviewed by Katie Couric on "Today" before the release of her latest tome, "Slander".

From that fifteen-minute interview, I learned everything I ever wanted about Coulter. Anytime the networks broadcast promos announcing an upcoming appearance, I make sure not to watch. If she should pop up on a news program (e.g., "The Situation Room" or "Meet the Press"), I switch channels.

Other than referring to Mrs. Edwards as a "harridan", did she say something truly newsworthy, or is this just more of the same, childish, need-for-attention crap she's been spewing for years?

Keith Olbermann, Stephen Colbert or Jon Stewart uttered a comment, I definitely missed it. Then again, they seem like hip guys, so maybe they finally caught on the the fact that she's not news, LOL.

I got the first full synopsis of Coulter's remarks and Mrs. Edwards' phone call this morning while listening to Bill Press's show on the local progressive talk radio affiliate. No surprise that Elizabeth Edwards conducted herself with all the poise, grace and intelligence that Coulter lacks. If former Senator Edwards is getting the far-right skeleton frothing at the mouth, then he must have something going for him!

Let's get EVERYONE to push her. Not just a little bit, not just a "fuck you" when we see her across the street, but really get in her face and grab on like a pit bull.

I used to hear "if you just stand up to a bully, you'll see what they really are; cowards." The bully that is Ann felt it appropriate to use a "schoolyard taunt" (her words) when speaking about a presidential nominee. Obviously the reason why she felt the need to do that is because she's worried that he has a chance. It's becoming painfully apparent that when pressured, she reacts not with grace and integrity, considering the feelings of others and acting with compassion and a willingness to learn and teach others, but with a freakout on the level of a 96-hour crystal meth addict picking at her scabs and grinding her teeth into stumps.

I say, let's push her to the brink. Mercy? Don't make me laugh. This is justice. Ignoring her only kept her books selling for the last six years, and let her continue to get away with being a rare public figure to advocate assasination, ridicule the grief of a woman who lost her child, and rip into the lives of others whose reputations she couldn't come close to. New York Times bestsellers? Please be reminded that "Peyton Place" stood on the New York Times best seller list for fifty-nine weeks. Major publishers don't care if anything is quality work--they just need to sell enough units to warrant clearcutting an old-growth forest. Television appearances? We have television shows devoted to showing people eating bugs for money, marrying strangers for money, making a public spectacle of themselves in their underwear for money. She makes for great television, and she knows by now that playing by the rules doesn't mean squat if it means it won't move more books off the shelf, and guarantee her more speaking engagements.

No. I say, when we see her, interrupt her. Butt in. Stop her while she's throwing a quip. Scream if you have to. Follow her around. When she changes the subject, or pretends that you're trying to silence her by disagreeing with her or calling her on her bullshit, keep her going. Feed her material. I swear, she'll be pawing that peroxided, color-stripped mop until she's got a bald spot. Then, who's going to photograph her? The Star? Nothing more than she deserves, and everything she's been doing, herself.

I don't recall too much about the video except that when Ann Coulter said things in Afghanistan were going "swimmingly" the other two guests burst into laughter, shrieked "swimmingly?!" and then took her apart, whereupon she clawed at her hair and wailed "Sean!" before unhooking her mic and leaving the set.

We all know you love your hair, Ann. It really is your best feature. But careful with those extensions, dear. Gluing them back in is tough and and if you don't do it right you look like Vince Neil (as he is today).

58. Pawing hair suggest insecurity -- and possibly lying.
It is a means to comfort yourself, to caress yourself. I have a similar weakness -- face pawing -- when I am thinking and, of course, when I am under stress. Ayn Rand Coulter does it to excess in the wrong situations. It must be quite a compulsion. I believe she is an emotionally very needy person in denial about her need. Love starved -- which would explain her thin physique and her desire to wear black. Women wear black to look thinner. Actually, it makes women look haggard and estranged -- that may, however, be the look she really wants to transmit.

41. The lady (cough, cough) doth protest too much, methinks.
I had to look up the definition of harridan:

Main Entry: har·ri·dan
Pronunciation: 'her-&-d&n, 'ha-r&-
Function: noun
Etymology: perhaps modification of French haridelle old horse, gaunt woman
: SHREW 2
Main Entry: 1shrew
Pronunciation: 'shrü, especially Southern 'srü
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English shrewe evil or scolding person, from Old English scrEawa shrew (animal)
1 : any of a family (Soricidae) of small chiefly nocturnal insectivores related to the moles and distinguished by a long pointed snout, very small eyes, and short velvety fur
2 : an ill-tempered scolding woman

note: "old horse, gaunt woman, evil, ill-tempered"

47. And yet the media still rolls out the red carpet for her as a mainstream commentator.

I think it's interesting that the media effectively blackballed Michael Moore after his comments on the "fictional war" even though it turned out to be dead on. What do we get instead? Ann Coulter on TV day after day leveling personal attacks at good people.

The fact that Coulter and her Conservative groupies are allowed to dominate the corporate media is a good argument in itself to bring back the fairness doctrine.

48. Through a cracked mirror...
Read the dictionary.com definition for "harridan" and then say to yourself: Ann Coulter or Elizabeth Edwards?

"a scolding, vicious woman; hag; shrew.
"

51. Oh, the crazy irony of it all...
From our great, great friends at Merriam-Webster Online:

Main Entry: har·ri·dan
Pronunciation: 'her-&-d&n, 'ha-r&-
Function: noun
Etymology: perhaps modification of French haridelle old horse, gaunt woman
: SHREW 2

Main Entry: shrew
Pronunciation: 'shrü, especially Southern 'srü
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English shrewe evil or scolding person, from Old English scrEawa shrew (animal)
1 : any of a family (Soricidae) of small chiefly nocturnal insectivores related to the moles and distinguished by a long pointed snout, very small eyes, and short velvety fur
2 : an ill-tempered scolding woman

I'm pretty sure that no one is permitted to bring reflective objects into Ann's house.

53. Ann, Your Own Thin Skin Is Getting Tiresome
The "entertaining and informative ideas" you claim in your writing are often little more than scatter-shot liberal-bashing, and all too frequently, transparently mean-spirited and cruel for the sake of controversy.

Given your book sales, you have a demonstrated niche market for that. Congratulations. But it's no testimonial to your character, self-awareness, or intellectual prowess, since "The Happy Hooker" and "The Rules" and a number of other rags I'm too bored to waste time Googling, also sold lots of books.

I'll object to your latest characterization of Elizabeth Edwards just as soon as I clean up the mess from falling on the floor, rolling around laughing and peeing myself over the outrageous irony of YOU judging ANYONE a harridan.
