A brave man walks through the teabagger protest on the National Mall in Washington, DC, with a large sign that reads "Public Option Now". If not for the cops that escorted him through the crowd, they probably would have eaten him alive.

Holy F***ing Shit! Look at those savages. If you take any single one of them aside and ask them about capitalism, they will sing it's praises until you can't take it any more. But having an option is now the worst thing in the world.

105. If I'm not mistaken there was Hebrew on his shirt
along with the word "Obama" -- he must be someone who remembers that poem ""First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a communist; Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a socialist; Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a trade unionist; Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a Jew; Then they came for me-- and there was no one left to speak out for me."

American nativism. An oxymoron. A chillingly familiar one. Rhine maidens anyone?

It's occurred to me as it must have to many Obama represents the America that came here to find freedom, the America that is an ideal for all the oppressed of the world, as symbolized by the Statue of Liberty, like the Jews coming to Germany to escape the pogroms in Poland. That's what's so scary about him to these people, not so much that he's black, but that he's international, and that America has always been a radical, international idea, not just another nasty little chauvinist country like they want it to be.

99. Actually...

I don't think the all republicans act unruly. In my office the ratio of republicans to democrats are 2 to 1 and they are some of the nicest people I've ever met. We have differences in our politics but we disscuss each others point of view without anything getting out of hand or rowdy.

People that are disruptive (sp) are just that disruptive people and shouldn't be referred to as just republicans. (IMHO) o course.

these are violent, hateful people, many who believe that the South merely had a 'draw' in the Civil War because Lincoln was killed by the banking cabal and shall rise again (the South, not Lincoln :P ). I wouldn't doubt for a second that if the cops hadn't been there, they would have assaulted the elderly man with the public option sign, perhaps severely injuring or possibly even killing him.

89. that's for sure . . .
The hate part is what gets me and many of them purport to be loving, Christian people. We had a tea party locally and I thought about doing the same and making my own sign. Honestly I was afraid to do so because of fears for my safety. I have arthritis and can't get around very fast as it is and I a was afraid someone would knock me down. The open hostility is just incredible. I thought Bush was a jerk but I would never have treated people the way these people are doing.

14. look at the hatred and near-violence caused by a sign ...
...that merely says "Public Option Now." Can you imagine? No mention of Obama, no liberal slogan or connection to Democrats whatsoever - this guy could be a Republican with a brain, for all we know. Yet he needed a police escort to get through that crowd.

I know I shouldn't be, but I continue to be astounded by the viciousness of these people. I guess I've led a sheltered life, I've never seen this kind of hate up close and personal, even when I was a kid and was called "n*****" by other children when we were bussed to a white school. That was less scary than this, maybe because it was just other kids. But to see this unrelenting ugliness from adults is just disconcerting, to make a huge understatement. I've never seen anything like it short of the B/W footage of the integration of southern schools. Rattles me to the core.

What exacerbated the problem was that we weren't there because we were bussed due to city policy, but because our school burned down... and worst, we were the "enrichment program" kids - the smart kids, in accelerated classes; apparently that school was the closest in the city with a similar program. Talk about a powder keg.

The story did have a good ending, though. One of the loudest and meanest leaders of those racist kids was a big tall rough muscular blond girl, at least a head taller than the rest of us. Her mother called our mothers, and invited six of us over for lunch. Good chili, too. :) She made her kid be there, and be polite. And made her stop. And encouraged her daughter to disassociate herself from the others. And she did, reluctantly. It defused the whole situation. The rest of the school year passed relatively peacefully. Yeah, the others kept bullying us - and make no mistake, we were not milquetoasts, we gave it right back, this was 1969, not 1959, big difference - and it was Cleveland, not the South, so there was no danger in defending ourselves. But the hostility became less frequent and leveled off to only 1 or 2 of them in the end. We all never become friends, but a grudging nod of the head as we passed in the hall was good enough. I have no idea what happened to that girl, or her friends, but... yeah. "Where are they now." Grim LOL.

This is probably why I'm so disappointed to see people in this day, 2009, with this kind of shameless pride in their ignorance and bigotry. If this brave woman 40 years ago could pull her child back from that ugliness, what the hell is wrong with these freaks?

They must be the other kids.

a. What's with freepers and their bullhorns? Every protest where these asswipes gather, they always have Mouth of the South Bullhorns; perhaps to make up for their lack of numbers?

b. Why do these porkers always have to POINT at you?

c. That old guy is my new hero. There's no way on earth I would have made it through that crowd of geriatrics, slaves and beer bellies without getting into several scraps.

d. If anyone thinks freepers wouldn't have attacked that old man, several of them beat up a Gold Star dad in plain view of cops during an 2007 anti-war protest in DC. Not ONE ASSAILANT was arrested. Here's proof.

103. Of course, there are two sets of standards..
There always has been, and always will be.

Competition among consumers over a scarcity of jobs is "good."
Competition among big business over those consumer's dollars is "bad."

Big government can't do anything right, ever.
Our government protects us with the best military in the world.

Obama's presidency is illegitimate cause we don't have enough background info to prove he's really a Kenyan Muslim.
Don't you DARE ask questions about Bush's past, or you're an American-hating terrorist-lover!! He was anointed by GOD, remember?

He probably told the first cop he saw what he was up to before he started. The rest probably came in as he went along and it became clear they were needed.

DC cops have a really good idea what to expect at these sorts of things. At the end of a five-minute video he's got what, seven cops, and is getting advice from a higher-up.

They could have, due to imminent harm to his life, just as easily have yanked him out of crowd which would have been a legal form of prior restraint. They came to a thoughtful compromise, and in doing so, salvaged his freedom of speech.

39. Thanks for pointing that out. I missed it.
You know one of the things that gets me about people like that guy. There he is all frothing at the mouth over something that I'll bet you anything if he's ever faced with the unfortunate reality of having a loved one in trouble with a life threatening medical emergency and he doesn't have the money to pay for treatment. I bet the first thing he'll do is exactly what any of us would do and that's seek "public assistance". That's what makes us different from dumb fucks like this guy. We don't just think about ourselves until 'we're' the one in need. We care about the country as a whole.

Just out of curiosity. I wonder how many people in that crowd ever applied for government assistance after being unfortunate victims of a flood, hurricane, tornado, etc? I wonder how many of them ever used medicare or medicade? And what made them think it was ok to receive public help?

Pathetic how so many people are so stupid.

37. You're right he was brave but the reaction from the crown is understandable.
To be fair, Is there any doubt that an individual holding a "Stop Islamo-Fascist" banner walking through an anti war rally would be meat with boos and taunts?

There are LOTS of reasons to ridicule these tea party racists and dimwits. I don't think this is one of them.

112. I've been to many many anti war protests in the last few years...
If anyone acted that way toward a counter protester (and yes, they were always there too!), many of us would have said something. It never happened where I was, and if I ever saw someone spit on someone, I'd really have a fit. Those wierdos from the Eagle forum were always among us. They had gigantic signs and always tried to get in the way if the media was around. I spoke with them from time to time. I especially tried to talk to the kids. People would try to give them brochures and info and we all felt that it was better to win them over by being kind. No one screamed or cursed and they were always resistent to everything we said. You know, it is possible that someone in that crowd notified the cops. I'm not defending tea baggers, but I am certain that there are a lot of people in that crowd who are not complete assholes who now feel like they wasted a Saturday looking like idiots and won't be back out again.

I love this guy for bringing out the "true colors" of the creeps and scum in that group and showing all of us what this bullshit is really about.

I say we call them on it and give them what they want - no public option. They all should have been told they'd be disallowed to drive on the "public" highways back to their hotels because that's a public option. I say let 'em put their money where their mouth is.

This was a remarkably stupid thing to do.

All this guy did, was to rile up people who were already riled up. He said nothing. He added nothing to the debate. He didn't try to do anything.

Most of all; he set back the cause that most of us believe in here: Passing a Bill that contains a strong Public Option.

You have to pick your fights carefully, boys and girls. This was a stupid, stupid, stupid fight to pick.

He should have left those tea-baggers alone.

Unless and until we challenge these tools each and every time they spout their filth, they're going to solely own the issue just as they do now. They obviously have their right to exercise free speech; we simply want to take reasonable exception to the falsehoods they're screaming.

In fact, this leads me to a question no commercial media outlet has answered that I know of: was there a significant anti-teabagger contingent present, beyond this courageous fellow?

If you think that Obama is a pretty good guy and good president, you've drunk the kool-aid.

If you think that Obama's health care reforms are a damn good start, you've sold out to big corporate interests and you don't care if sick people die!

If you think a date certain to end the war in Iraq was a fine idea, you're just as bad as BUSH!

The only difference between having Obama in office and having Bush in office was that before, the FReeps always supported Bush and we DUers always bashed him.

Now the FReeps bash the president and we bash him too . . .

Nice.

There was some laughter a couple comments, NO Threats. This re-occurred for more than than 2 hours. No Police escort, just the lone nut parading up and down the street in apparent safety.

On the flip side it takes real nerve to approach the astroturfers when they have safety in numbers.

127. Clarification: this only reminded me of Little Rock. The bravery of those nine kids
was way beyond this guys' act of courage, I know. And those kids didn't have police protection from the screaming, spitting white people: the National Guard was there to BLOCK them going to high school. It took many days and President Eisenhower sending in federal troops - the 101st Airborne - to finally get the kids past the mob and into school. Even then the kids suffered a year of threats and abuse, and suspension, for daring to want an education in the same school as whites.
