The Smothers Brothers and Pat Paulson...politics at its very best. I miss them all.

More about Pat Paulson:

"A tongue-in-jowl approach to American politics made Pat Paulsen one of the most influential comedians of the 1960s and '70s. Best known for his zany editorializing on the humorous late-60s television variety show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, Paulsen was a five time candidate for the presidency on the Straight Talkin' American Government (STAG) party."

...."When The Smothers Brothers launched their comedy show, in 1967, Paulsen was hired as a cast member. His off-the-wall political commentaries quickly became an important part of the show. At the suggestion of Tom Smothers, Paulsen announced his candidacy for the presidency, in late-1967, explaining that he was motivated to seek the office because "it has a good pension plan". Paulsen's campaign, which inspired 200,000 write-in votes, resulted in his winning an Emmy award in 1968. Following the show's cancellation, in 1970, Paulsen hosted his own comedy show on ABC. The same year, Paulsen and his wife moved to Cloverdale, California and opened a winery. They continued to operate the business until their divorce in 1992."

1. I am proud to report I cast my first presidential vote for Pat Paulsen!
It was 1972. I hated Nixon but McGovern pissed me off when he forced Eagleton off the ticket. So I wrote in Pat Paulsen. My dad was furious at me. But I am still proud of that vote. :)

6. You don't hear anyone yelling that the Democrats will take your bullets away
Maybe he had something, take the bullets, and everyone can still have their guns.

10. Imagine the thrill...
As I remember him explaining it, taking away bullets will work especially well for the hunter who says he's in it for thrill of the hunt... imagine how thrilling it would be to sneak up on a grizzly with an unloaded gun!

5. Hold on! Maybe Pat can still run?!!
After all, he seems to meet all the Constitutional requirements:

No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

And I don't notice anything that says you still have to be alive.

7. Smothers Brothers

...the best show ever. I loved it and Pat was always a hoot.

I remember how pissed my teacher got when I told her my Mom was voting for Pat.

Cheers

13. 1988?
That must have been from a 20th Anniversary special.

I'm old enough to remember Paulson back in the 70's. Too funny.

14. Pat Paulsen editorial on the draft

Are Our Draft Laws Unfair?

October 29, 1967

A good many people feel our present draft laws are unjust. These people are called soldiers...Now the crux of the criticism is based on the premise that an ineptitude without gross regress tends to efficiate and gorge masical...and frankly, we find this a bit cloudy.

Let's take this step by step...When we talk about the draft, we are talking about a law duly enacted by Congress, in which men should be drafted first...women second...and Congressmen last. And what are the arguments against the draft? We hear that it is unfair, immoral...discourages young men from studying, ruins their careers, and their lives...picky...picky...picky.

Actually, there is no place like the Army for building character...seeing worthwhile places...learning a trade...and just being with fine, stimulating people. Everyone knows that -- well, not everyone or we wouldn't need a draft, would we? Ha - ha - ha...Now we don't claim the draft is perfect. And we do have a constructive proposal for a workable alternative. We propose a draft lottery...in which the names of all eligible males will be put into a hat and the men will be drafted according to their head sizes...The tiny heads will go into the military and the fat heads will go into government.

Speaking for myself, I would be right up there in the front lines if they'd have me...But unfortunately, the day before I was to appear before my draft board, I shot my toe off duck hunting in my living room...Thank you and goodnight.

Thank you,

Patrick L. Paulsen
