It turns out that the real life Norma Rae, Crystal Lee Sutton, had been battling health insurance companies for adequate treatment for her cancer. She was struggling to the end.

For those of you have not seen the film, Norma Rae is a tale about a "southern textile worker employed in a factory with intolerable working conditions. This concern about the situation gives her the gumption to be the key associate to a visiting labor union organizer. Together, they undertake the difficult, and possibly dangerous, struggle to unionize her factory" (IMDB). It was based on the all-too-true struggles of Crystal, who has now died.

1. Sad isn't it...

She had to fight all her life... I didn't think that's what America was all about. Wanna read a good book on Unions, a very revealing book on international efforts to thwart unions, it's called "Against the Tide' It's about the Canadian Seamens Union. It was the largest union in the world at one time, and a little know story. A must read for any Union person, and should be required reading for all union people as far as I am concerned. Jim Green is a friend of mine, an American draft dodger who almost became the Mayor of Vancouver BC. A good man and a true lefty.
