MSNBC Countdown w/ KEITH OLBERMANN - 17 Sept. 2009: Dean on Hate Radio on the Right says it's "way over the line."

After showing Rush Limbaugh stating that we need segregated school buses, and showing Nancy Pelosi's emotional call for civility, Keith Interviews Howard Dean.

OLBERMANN: Speaker Pelosi also said we have to take responsibility for our words and any incitement that may cause. You share her concern?

DEAN: I do. I think that there's a lot of money to be made in passing out hate, the kind that Rush Limbaugh is just doing. And Rush Limbaugh is, look, he's always an entertainer, but he's way over the line. And there's a long unfortunate American tradition to this going back to Father Coghlin and people before that. They appeal to the very worst in people. They appeal to the side of all of us that is about anger and fear and hatred. And they empower it. And it is an evil thing to do. And it's very very bad for the country. But for a long time these people have put themselves and their wallets way ahead of America. They pretend to be patriots, but they're not patriotic at all. They don't serve our country.

OLBERMANN: The speaker didn't mention any names here, but essentially she was saying certain statements are not falling on the ears of necessarily-balanced people. That seems to me to be sort of the overlooked essential part of this equation here, isn't it? I mean, if they're beginning to talk like they want insurrection, somebody's going to take it seriously.

DEAN: I don't think we're going to get to that point, but, look, I've been through this before. We were the first state in the country to do civil unions, which is basically partnerships for gay Americans - it's a way to give them rights. And Vermont is thought of as a pretty progressive place. We had this very kind of stuff. People very very angry, very upset, and it wasn't so much just about gay rights, which is a foreign view for them. It was about change. And there's always a certain population that's very fearful of change, very confused by change, worried about what it's going to mean for them. And I saw this, in people that I knew well, and liked. You know, there's an underside to human nature - and that's what Limbaugh and Glenn Beck and all these people are taking advantage of. They're appealing to the bad part in all of us. And we all have it, no matter how many degrees we may have, or how fancy our neighborhood is, everybody has this.

The problem is do you want to incite it, and what does that mean for the country if you want to build a great country.

OLBERMANN: Is this conversation sort of an extension, I mean, the one about intense animosity, it's relationship to the prospect of violence. Is this the natural follow-up to what President Carter said about the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Obama?

DEAN: Race certainly has something to do with it, but this is is much more, it has gone on long before President Obama was President. This is about appealing to the very worst instincts in human beings and I think it's fairly despicable. I've thought that hate radio on the right was pretty despicable, because they make no bones about it. They pad their wallets and take advantage of other people. It's not an admirable.. these are not admirable people, these people. They're mean people. They make jokes about people that don't deserve it.

One of the reasons I never go on Bill O'Reilly's show, the only reason I don't go on Bill O'Reilly's show, is because I saw him take apart a 23-year-old who lost his father in the World Trade Center and tell him he was unpatriotic because he didn't support the war. Those kind of people I don't hang around because they're not good for the country and they're not good human beings.

1. "They don't serve our country"! Excellent
Dean:patriot::bounce:

There's "Father Coughlin" again..I've read his name a couple of times in association with joe mccarthy..he must have been one evil priest.

Thank Goodness for Nancy Pelosi gettting out in front on calling for responsibility for your actions, too:patriot:

24. Is promoting racial violence legal?

Isn't there any way to control this hatred run wild? Many of the people who support it seem to think it's funny and can't understand why other people get upset by it.

Isn't there some way to charge these people with something (like lying through their teeth to promote racial violence)?

2. Yes,Some people
are NOT GOOD!! Really they are not good people.

Imagine - if you can - not having a conscience, none at all, no feelings of guilt or remorse no matter what you do, no limiting sense of concern of the well-being of strangers, friends, or even family members. Imagine no struggles with shame, not a single one in your whole life, no matter what kind of selfish, lazy, harmful, or immoral action you had taken. And pretend that the concept of responsibility is unknown to you, except as a burden others seem to accept without question, like gullible fools. Now add to this strange fantasy the ability to conceal from other people that your psychological makeup is radically different from theirs. Since everyone simply assumes that conscience is universal among human beings, hiding the fact that you are conscience-free is nearly effortless. You are not held back from any of your desires by guilt or shame, and you are never confronted by others for your cold-bloodedness. The ice water in your veins is so bizarre, so completely outside of their personal experience that they seldom even guess at your condition.

In fact because they don't give a shit whom they hurt to get thier way, they do make OTHER people sick.

How many people does pathology negatively affect?' We did a little math....There are 304 million persons in the U.S. 1 in 25 people will have the disorders associated with 'no conscience' which include anti-social personality disorder, sociopath, and psychopath. 304 million divided by 25 is 12.16 million have no conscience. Each anti social/psychopath will have approximately 5 partners who will be exposed to their pathology = 60.8 million people!

(This does not include the children negatively affected and since psychopaths are hypersexual they tend to have lots of children so we could certainly tack on about half that number for children based on 2.5 children per psychopath. And sadly, this does not include all the other forms of pathology related to Cluster B personality disorders that also negatively impact others such as Narcissistic Personality Disorder or Borderline Personality Disorder. Current stats say that narcissism affects approximately 1% of the population ...But if we begin even with just the statistics on 1 in 25 have no conscience and multiply that out to figure out how many wounded people are out there---it's a huge issue. )
The Institute's friend, Howard, who was trained in psychiatry, said "I consider this to be the country's number one public health issue." And with good reason---60 million people negatively impacted by someone else's extreme pathology.

Thanks for the "Inside the Mind of a Sociopath" link, very interesting and totally apprproate, as is the other DU thread which |I'm just about to have a look at.

If you don't mind, I'd like to tag this excellently compiled profiling of the sociopath to it, for those who might not have seen it already...

27. The reason that Dr. Dean

is not in the Cabinet (or even an "advisor"), can be summed up in a few words: Democratic "Leadership" Council (DLC), Rahm Emanuel, and Hillary Clinton.

34. Would you really want Dean in the Cabinet?
Or do you want him out in public, where he can raise money and fight the good fight to pull health care reform to the left?

The cabinet works for Obama. Dean works for the Progressive community. And he does a damn fine job at that.

I just hope that next year he gets involved with raising the netroots army for the midterms. This movement we've got going can't take any elections off, or it'll be 1994 all over again.

28. Howard Dean nailed it, they're not good human beings.
Limbaugh, Beck and the like; do make their living by appealing to the lowest common denominator, inciting the peoples' natural fears, dumbing them down and magnifying their hatred.

I remember Rush Limbaugh; going so far as to make fun of Michael J. Fox's symptoms from Parkinson's Disease, just because he didn't like Fox's message, what kind of low life is that!?

Thanks for the thread, Hissyspit.

30. Rush/Glenn need to be put in a re-education camp
Why can't we figure out a way to round up Rush and Glenn and put them away in a camp in some very far off forest? Who do they think they are criticizing our President? Don't they realize how difficult the job of President is? We should send some of our community organizers into their studios to remind them who's in charge of leading our country.

33. Howard ALWAYS said straight out what others feared to say
Listen to how Pelosi chooses her words so very carefully, and Howard just says it in plain English.

Maybe that's why he's NOT president--this country may just not be ready for as president who tells
us not what we WANT to hear but what we NEED to hear. I was ready to support Howard when he was still
"Howard Who?" Rahm Emmanuel probably still wishes he'd return to being just that, but Howard just
connects--like Obama the campaigner did.

Notice how often Howard is asked to be on the TV talk shows? He doesn't spew out hate or made-up facts.
But what he says rings true, and just gets a listener to say, "yeah, he's got it exactly right"--and
that's because he does.

He must scare Republicans and quite a few Administration operators to death. He owes NOTHING to any of them.

Which is why WE love him!

My Grandfather, who's a conservative, recently stopped listening to Limbaugh after he heard him call for segregated buses. The Republican party has always had some racists in their base and the way they are headed all they are going to be left with are those people and the religious nuts.
