This clip is long, but well worth the time to listen to. She has a "Come to Jesus" speech about Vitter and how mean-spirited and unfair his amendments about public housing are.

In calling him out, she also calls out the rest of the yahoos who supported these changes. Landrieu also takes dead aim at a seemingly "fair" proposal that passed and hits the 79 members who voted for it.

She is pissed, and she says what should be said on the floor of the Senate and House everyday about certain bills and other policies.

5. She may make me mad at other times,
but she deserves a lot of credit for this speech. She is truly angry, and I can only imagine how she really would have

phrased it if not for her recognition of the "decorum of the Senate." Certain people don't deserve that respect, but

the "Senate" as a branch of government does.

She said that "the poor don't have lobbyist". Aren't the people we elect to represent us supposed to be our lobbyist?
I know they do a shitty job at it but still. We pay their freaken salaries!!
The rest of I agree with.

Landrieu and other should be doing a better job of it at times, but she gets my vote on this one.

I think everyone knows she is referring to the "lobbyists" who have obscene amounts of money at hand to push their

agenda.

11. I know she was talking about them.
I agree with her on this one too.
I think her stand on the PO is a bit fu_ked.
Supporting the public option would help the very poor she speaks of too.

"No, I'm not open to it. I'm not open to a public option," said Landrieu. "However, I will remain open to a compromise, a full compromise. Public option is not something that I support. I don't think it's the right way to go."

Edited on Sat Sep-19-09 06:21 AM by Monk06
in the Lower Ninth ward and other black suburbs
in New Orleans in order to complete what Katrina
began. In the words of one white politician in
Louisiana, "Finally, this is our chance go get the
niggers in New Orleans"

This is Jim Crow race punishment and unequal treatment before
the law and completely unconstitutional.

36. That is exactly what it is!
The yahoos who were "really steamed" about passage of the civil rights bill in the '60s have gone full throttle to recreate the Antebellum South of their warped fantasies. The more they succeed, the greater this country's resemblance to 1930's Germany. That's a fact!
It was the equivalent of the KKK's infamous "night riders" which created a window in the 2000 Fl polls to let the shrub in the door. Ask any Jacksonville cop who was on the force at that time.

....in Jacksonville alone were dissuaded from the 2000 polls by "license check" road blocks. It would only have taken 500 to make the difference. I suspect there's not a cop in town who doesn't know about it.

16. You Go Girl
I loved that. She's pissed and it's visible. Her example about the 4th grader vs. the older sibling is right on target. I grew up in a family of 4 kids. Three of us were pretty normal. Unfortunately, I have a brother who isn't. He was arrested multiple times for different reasons. My parents drove themselves to tears on many occasions trying to control him or fix him. We learned later that he is schizophrenic. There was nothing my parents could have done to curb that.

I was an honor student. If Vitter's amendment were in effect for my family then I'd have been a homeless honor student. As she points out, punishing the family for the sins of one member does not make sense. Vitter is just trying to run more poor people out of New Orleans.

Don't these idiot racist bastards realize that if they drive all the minorities out of New Orleans they'll have no one to clean their houses. They'll have no one to do the jobs most of us white folks feel are beneath us (getting a job at McDonalds was a coup when I was growing up. But kids now wouldn't even apply). They'll have no one to kick around and blame. What will adulterous asses like Vitter do when they no longer have the poor to blame for the ills of the state?

Since his amendment is targeted at one city and one set of people I see a costly court battle based on the 14th Amendment. All Vitter is doing is setting up a game for the forces of good to fight the forces of evil in court. Vitter and his forces of evil will loose.

Bastard. Cheating fucking bastard.

18. President Obama is delusional
I admire his sincere attempt to bring civility to our political system. However, he is dealing with dishonorable people that have no intention cooperation.

The amendment that was proposed by Vittner, a sexual pervert, is driven solely by racism and targeted at African Americans. I would like to stress the fact that these are our fellow Americans who he is targeting to destroy. His concentration is on the African part.

These are the very same people that Bush, the president of all the people, could not be bothered to stop and make certain were being properly assisted by their government in their desperate time of need. Bush and Cheney, after attending a celebration for McCain, didn't what their "beautiful minds" still reveling in a festive spirit to be polluted with the actual suffering of undeserving African Americans. These dark skinned people are what Palin doesn't believe are Real Americans. I have to agree with her that that is the perception of Republicans. Palin's Real Americans are ignorant racist nincompoops who want to secede from the union.

19. That was great, I wish she
stuck up for the poor people more frequently. Mary often sides
with the "big business" who (seemingly) make it
worth her while. That Vitter bill was/is unconscionable. Only
for residents of N.O.? That speaks volumes. Now, we all know
that Vitter "got in trouble" with a prostitute(s).
If he were poor, he would've been prosecuted. So, he (if his
circumstances were as they should be) and his family would've
been kicked out of public housing? Unbelievable. I helped
rehab N.O. as a carpenter in 2006. It was pathetic. Public
housing that had no damage was demolished, while people with
money, restored their homes (had us do it) even if the damage
was complete. The ninth ward, even then, was just a rubbish
pile. The property values were unbelievable. A home that would
sell for maybe, $60,000.00, in Indiana was selling in N.O. for
$1,000,000.00 or more. Rent for a 1 bedroom apt. was $1,100.00
a month (cheaper ones). How Vitter, a Federal Senator could
try to legislate local issues from the U.S. Senate, is beyond
me. He is obviously very crooked and probably stands to make a
lot of money if his "bill" is passed. Please Mary
Landrieu, act like this more often. Forget about the monied
lobbyists and concentrate on the people you are supposed to be
lobbying for, the citizens of La. If you did this, you would
understand their need for public health care/ Universal health
care.

28. Senator Landrieu's righteous rant on this issue does not absolve her of her many past
failings. The other bill about community service already passed. Why did she not deliver an impassioned plea on the Senate floor to defeat it BEFORE it was voted on. Maybe that bill would have failed if she had been as active in opposing it as she currently is in opposing the public option.

The bigger concern here is WHY the Democratic leadership let these bills get through without a major fight.

This just goes to show the difference between the Democrats' approach to governing and the Republicans' approach. David Vitter is a rabid, right-wing tool and a fascist, racist asshole who consorted with prostitutes in violation of the laws of D.C. and Louisiana. He should have been on trial for breaking those laws but he got a pass unlike Governor Elliot Spitzer. VITTER SHOULD BE TARGET #1 FOR ELECTORAL ELIMINATION BY THE DEMOCRATS. Yet they stand by with their thumbs up their asses and let him introduce a bill like this without making him the poster boy for RACIST REPUBLICAN AMERICA. When a Democrat sponsors a bill to do ANYTHING for anyone but the wealthy elites, the Republicans brand him/her as a Socialist/Communist/Government Giveaway Specialist and shake him/her like a pit bull with a rag doll.

No fucking wonder we can't get legislation passed by Democrats. They are either congenital cowards who are unwilling to fight for the least among us, or they are so indebted to the corporate interests that they CANNOT vote for legislation that matters to the poor.

End of rant.

41. I'm thinking Mary needs to hear
from folks who live outside Louisiana who pitched in, often at great sacrice, to help in the months and years after Katrina. They realized LA needed help big-time and rose to the occasion. The demolition of public housing became a huge issue - remember the fences and demonstrations during a city council meeting? So, it seems to me if ordinary citizens (maybe not Brad Pitt) thought New Orleans and outlying areas were worth helping, it is an extra travesty for Vitter to be working against those very people.

It was very satisfying to see Mary rail against something so evil, but I'm with the folks who cite her on the wrong side too much of the time.

Edited on Sat Sep-19-09 03:07 PM by Joe Chi Minh
POOR PEOPLE ARE ENTITLED, if the rich deny them basic amenities and a living wage. Rich people are NOT ENTITLED TO RIP OFF THE REST OF THE POPULATION - even if Milton Friedman did tell them they are; that it was for their benefit that they would be impoverishing them. It ain't so.

The wealth of the nation belongs to every one in that nation. Their fore-fathers shed blood, sweat and tears to build that nation. Not to see their descendants treated like offal. I'm not saying it should be shared out equally. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to realise that most people with a higher worldly intelligence need more more money.

Most people are happy to have a job with a good working conditions and a good pension, with an income that will leave them some disposable income to buy quite modest luxuries. Like in the fifties and sixties. Not mansions, servants and ocean-going yachts.

But those neo-Republican sharks are always bitching as if it is their hard-earned money they're parting with!

50. 10 hours of community service for the poor?
That is punishing the poor for BEING poor. Single mothers working for low wages, trying to find child care for their children while they work, and feed and clothe them at the same time. I'm quite sure they have tons of spare time to do menial, unpaid work to make amends for being poor. As if they aren't oppressed enough.

I know what it is like being dirt poor, trying to provide for children and give them some quality time as well. Ten hours community service is time that would require extra childcare and time that a parent can't spend helping her children with their homework or listening to their problems. Any program to help poor families should be one that helps improve the quality of their lives, so these children don't end up on the streets, getting into trouble.

People like Vitter don't understand the day-to-day stress of just trying to survive, with little or no support. Children need a parent in the home more not less. Food and shelter is not enough, they need hands-on, caring child raising as well. And struggling parents need encouragement and support, not punishment for doing the best they can under oppressive circumstances. And when they punish the parents, they are punishing the children as well.

60. That's exactly right
Instead of putting their extra time into parenting and perhaps keep the kids out of trouble (and prevent them from becoming homeless if Vitter were to have his way) they have to do community service? Isn't that sort of putting the poor into a contradictory, no-win situation? Of course, that's where Vitter wants them - keep them away from home cleaning up trash on the highway while their kids, unsupervised, get into trouble - and then Vitter gets them evicted.

What utter brutality, and utter hypocrisy given Vitter's own lawbreaking past.

Good for her! I hope she brought up the diapers he soiled!!! There shouldn't be a day go by without someone on the Floor mentioning the poor prostitute who had to diaper him so he could soil himself and get off.

Why is he still a Senator?

52. So if a Senator, using his Public Paycheck to pay for housing were to
be arrested for, I don't know, let's say hiring a Prostitute - could we evict him under this amendment?

63. LOL!
You never want to be on the wrong end of a "Come to Jesus" meeting. It does have a religious connotation in some uses, but not in this sense. Jesus has very little to do with it, but you will regret some "sin."

Buddhists, my dad Shinto Buddhist.. and most of the kids I went to school with where of all different ethnic cultures including Asian. Thanks for this.. Its nice to learn something new!

66. Definition:
"Come to Jesus" :

Getting called on the carpet, dressed down, or otherwise chewed out in a severe manner. Usually used in conjunction with "meetin'" (meeting)
He was late one too many times, so the old man dragged him in the office for a "come to jesus meetin'".

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=come%20to%20jesus

There are other definitions listed at the site. It's not a phrase I want to hear aimed at me.

54. It's time to choose sides. Sorry, but that's where we are. The republicans
are willing to start a race war and/or get the President assassinated to keep the Democrats from succeeding. The Blue Dogs must decide on a side. Sen Landrieu hopefully recognizes that siding with the Vitters is dangerous to America. I hope the other Blue Dogs figure it out. I am afraid Sen Max Butt-kiss chose the side promoting a race war.

I looked online, but couldn't find anything. This is terrible policy. Making federal law for a single city. David Vitter should be ashamed of himself (for a great many things).

70. WOW!
I'm a white female of middle class upbringing. I lived in New Orleans most of my life-left in 1994. I was there when Mary's dad, Moon Landrieu, was the mayor of New Orleans (1970-1978). Moon was New Orleans last white mayor. Mitch Landrieu, Mary's brother, is serving his second term as Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana.

The Landrieu's are good people. I know Mary doesn't vote like most of us would like most of the time(she's a Blue Dog from a red state). I really wish she'll change her mind about the public option. Then she goes and gives a rant like this one in the above vid, makes me teary-eyed with that speech.
Go, Mary. I didn't know you had that kind of passion in you.:applause:

PS Please, Mary, do the right thing and change your mind about the public option.

PPS David Vitter (aka Diaper Dave) is still a major mofo asshole. :puke:

... I know you won't be holding your breath for a kinder, more gentler group of thugs, Senator Landrieu. They couldn't find the meaning of "kind" in the dictionary... unless it was the "kind" of stuff that ensures they'll be able to never take responsibility for clandestine visits with prostitutes and a closet full of dirty DEPENDS.

85. Parallel Universe?
OMG, first Bill-O seemingly endorses a public option, and now this passionate lecture by Mary L. Good on her, go girl, but where has this empathy in her been? Some of her votes are more in line with what she's ripping Vitter about - one recent one was her being one of the many democrats (shame on the others too) who voted against instituting usury laws, so I assume that while she wants the 4th grade girl's family to remain in their housing she's just fine with her parent(s) paying 35% interest on credit cards.

So.... it's a start and people do change, we'll see if she's one of them. I surely hope so, one less democrat in name only would be great and greatly important. Come to the light Mary, you can do it.

86. great passionate speech- loved her suggested amendment that vitters
Edited on Sun Sep-20-09 12:54 AM by BREMPRO
would be required to knock on the door of the 4th grader who just got an A on her test to tell her that she and her mother were being evicted and be homeless because her brother got in trouble. Should have added he'd have to do it in a diaper with a studded collar and leash.

This is righteous indignation at it's best.

Like to see that kind of passion from her against private insurers outrageous profits and denials of coverage- and supporting a public option.
