Barack Obama, the US president, is getting ready to host Israeli and Palestinian leaders for a meeting he hopes might get peace talks started again.

But Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, has made his position clear in the past few hours, saying he will defend settlement expansion, which is the big sticking point.

Al Jazeera English's http://www.thenation.com/directory/bios/clayton_swisher">Clayton Swisher has been out on the streets of Jerusalem to find out what Israelis think about Obama and his plans.

---- --- ----

A recent poll made by the Jarusalem Post has found that just 4% think that President Obama is pro-Israeli. These people interviewed on the street sound just as scarily disinformed as the tebaggers, in fact that 1st guy is even scarier than anything I've seen so far.

Note to mods, I thought it would be ok to post this here as it's related President Obama's policies in Israeli/Palestinian affairs.

1. TWO STATE SOLUTION
There is a unanimous consensus for this solution. The U.S. could easily threaten Israel by NOT giving them $3-4 billion in FULL every fiscal year and Israel would IMMEDIATELY cease their settlement building. Why doesn't America do this? Possbily because of the Israel lobby. This friendship has always been one way, Israel would be close to nothing without the helping hand of the U.S.

3. It's not very reality based their dislike of the President the facts are ...
Edited on Mon Sep-21-09 06:15 PM by GivePeaceAchance
Israel faces less attacks under Democratic administrations. The facts don't lie they don't have to like him for his race(although it would be more humane) but at least they should like th facts. All the work President Obama is doing in the Muslim world is in Israel's safety and security rather than causing more population dispersement like the last President did, which only logically makes more tensions in the region. It's nice to choose facts they're everyones best friend.

Why do people choose emotion over logic it doesn't relaly get us anywhere but further apart. To hear them talk like the right wing it's a bit worrying but time and adjustment to who Barack really is will help.

4. I prefer a Pro-US president, independent of Israel Lobby pressure
I know it's a tall order, but I sure hope someday our politicans can free themselves from pernicious Israel lobby influence. Frankly, I couldn't care less what Israelis think of President Obama. Israel is just another parasite living off US charity, but they treat us with contempt. As far as I'm concerned, Netanyahu and all the goons associated with his ugly regime can go take a dip in Hades.

5. Well said! I totally agree.
The neocons have taken control of not only the government, but also the media in Israel.

7. I would prefer a Pro-"Average American" president.
International and other corporations do far worse to average Americans than the Israel lobby and no one is showing them the door.

Anyway, just wanted to say it is not an Israel thing. There are plenty of corporate execs and goons that deserve far worse than a dip.

10. I agree with you, as well. It is exactly because our president
is more pro-U.S. and trying to bring a halt to the expansion of settlements that is pissing Israel off. And it's not only Obama pissing them off but several human rights groups, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, B'Tselem and even the United Nations, that have become increasingly and harshly critical of Israeli treatment of Palestinians, to the point where the Israeli government is now criticizing those reports of its behavior. I think Israel knew that impartiality was coming and hence the very low Obama favorability and racism. Nevertheless, I've been waiting a long time for an even hand in dealing with Israel. It's long overdue.

16. "Israelis are..." Your response is disingenuous.
Maybe next time say what you mean. If you meant, some, then say some.

I refuse to argue with you any longer about it. Take care.

wanted to be incensed about. Your problem, your misrepresentation.

13. This "poll" is total BS... and the interviews are with malcontents
While his ratings are down somewhat, he's still at around 50% in Pro Israel vs pro Palestine ratings. Here are the real poll numbers:

JERUSALEM, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama's popularity is waning among Israeli Jews who believe his policies are more pro-Palestinian than pro-Israeli, a poll indicates.

Fifty-one percent of the participants in the poll, conducted for the Jerusalem Post, said they felt Obama's policies are more pro-Palestinian, compared to 50 percent in a June poll.

Smith Research conducted the poll and asked 500 Israeli Jews for their opinion this week, the newspaper said Friday. The margin of error was placed at 4.5 percent.

The new poll was conducted before reports surfaced that Obama had agreed to exclude Jerusalem from any future construction freeze, the paper noted.

A similar poll conducted by the newspaper in May indicated 31 percent believed Obama to be pro-Israeli and 14 percent pro-Palestinian, the news aper said.

15. Jerusalem Post - "4% of Israeli Jews: Obama pro-Israel"
This is how the Jerusalem Post themselves are reporting it...

Aug 27, 2009 23:54 | Updated Aug 28, 2009 17:25
4% of Israeli Jews: Obama pro-Israel
By GIL HOFFMAN

The number of Israelis who see US President Barack Obama's policies as pro-Israel has fallen to four percent, according to a Smith Research poll taken this week on behalf of The Jerusalem Post.

Fifty-one percent of Jewish Israelis consider Obama's administration more pro-Palestinian than pro-Israel, according to the survey, while 35% consider it neutral and 10% declined to express an opinion. The poll of 500 people representing a statistical model of the Jewish Israeli population had a margin of error of 4.5%.

A much-cited Post poll published on June 19 that put the first figure at 6% had been cited by top officials in both the White House and the Prime Minister's Office as the catalyst for recent American efforts to improve the American-Israeli relationship. But the new poll proves that those efforts have not improved Obama's reputation among Israelis.

The earlier poll, taken shortly after Obama reached out to the Muslim world in a landmark address in Cairo, found that 50% of those sampled considered the administration's policies more pro-Palestinian than pro-Israeli, and 36% said the policies were neutral. The remaining 8% did not express an opinion.

21. he is quite despised in the fundamentalist jewish neighborhoods in chicago.
i have a friend who had a handmade obama sign on his fence from the day he declared. he lives in a very, very fundie jewish neighborhood. it was defaced daily. he had a lot of stickers on his car, which was also egged and defaced. shortly before the election he even had a crude malatov cocktail tossed over his fence. his house caught fire, although it there was little damage.
ahh, godly people. save me from godly people.
