House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) appeared yesterday at a health care reform discussion hosted by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. As the newspaper reported, constituents "listened without booing" and "left in an orderly fashion -- without shouting, fighting or the escort of law enforcement." What a refreshing change of pace.

As Think Progress pointed out, there was only one glitch: Cantor told a woman whose uninsured relative needs a tumor operation that she ought to look into "an existing government program" or seek charity to pay for the operation. Way to stick to conservative principles.

The constituent said she has a close relative in her early forties "who did have a wonderful, high-paying job, owns her own home, and is a a real contributing member of society." Then she lost her job and found out she has stomach tumors and needs an operation.

"She has no insurance," the constituent said.

"This person is a very close member of my family," she said. "She's ill. And she has no way to have this operation. So I'm asking you, what would you do if this were your close relative. Your niece, your aunt, your sister or whatever."

Cantor suggested looking into "an existing government program."

"There are programs, there are charitable organizations, there are hospitals here who do provide charity care," he continued.

"No one in this country, given who we are, should ever be sitting without an option to go be addressed."

And apparently this Republican wants us to rely on government and the charity of others to ensure that.

2. Which government program?
Which charity? Which hospitals?

That's the problem with these guys, they're just absolutely sure this stuff exists somewhere and have absolutely no idea that it doesn't unless they're pinned down to specifics by circumstances in their own families.

4. Her family member should have had the sense
not to get sick after losing her job. Obviously, she did something wrong to have all that happen.

:sarcasm:

And I wouldn't waste my time asking Eric Cantor anything.

6. Would You All Believe that on my local AM Station the conservative host
Asked a conservative caller what advice she would give to an ill recently unemployed man that stated he was in dire need of health care and begged the host to "Please put yourself in my Shoes" and the Sheservative said "he should look to his family for Help"

Really Conservative Bitch? Do you think his mom or dad has 500 thousand dollars laying around for surgery?

The fucking nerve of these assholes

24. These people are unfuckingbelievable
Everyone doesn't come from a family of Duggards or both parents in good health with a history of longevity. What if the guy was an orphan? Do we Democrats have to explain multiple circumstances to these idiots?

25. The Duggars have a whole clan of fundies outside the family to help out each other.
Their church would pool together and most likely help out a sick member.

Of course if anyone is insinuating that you have to be a member of a religious institution in good standing to be worthy of such community....

13. see, that question should have been prefaced by asking her if she's pro life
and when she said "yes", because she will automaticall puff herself up with pride over her answer, then she needed to be hit with "then how can you, as a christian person, ignore the fact that Jesus said 'whatsoever you do the least of you, that you do unto me? How can you tell someone, basically, "I don't care. Die", and call yourself either christian and/or pro-life? Honestly. Do you not think that if their family had it like that that they would have reached out to them, first? Did that one get past you or are you too stupid to follow logic to its reasonable conclusion? Part of compound phrase "pro-life" is the word "Life". Life requires one to live. Therefore, how do you propose one live their life when one needs adequate and affordable health care and they can't afford it?"

IMO, these assholes are not called on their hypocricy nearly as often as they should be.

23. Excellent Question and
I thought of these two conservatives as the definition of Death Panels. This man may end up on the banks of some river living in a tent and dying from malnutrition just like the guy did a few weeks ago. I wonder if she will ever walk in his shoes.

7. If she was contributing to society to the tune of
high pay and a good home, she would never pass means testing hurdles to qualify for gov't aid. Until, that is a year or so later when she has been too sick to work for months, has lost her job, home, and everything else and is living at relative's homes.

People are too blind in asserting the 'help' availible for the poor and those caught in emergencies. It helps many supposedly insured people not focus on the fact that one accident or bad illness might wipe you out and possibly go essentially untreated.

Hey, no, wouldn't hey go for that. How they argue against something the people susidize or pay for, for them, without any conscience about hypocisy is amazing.

10. Yes, I agree with CANTor, this women deserves the same
charitable access to medical care as mr. CANTor. Otherwise, he should refrain from having something he expects others to do without.

12. If I'm not mistaken...
government programs like Medicaid wipe you out financially before they help you. Don't they? Everyone I know who has ever had to rely on Medicaid can't own property or have any financial resources. You have to pay your own way and sell off everything until you are absolutely broke before qualifying for that type of assistance. If I am wrong tell me. In essence, if I am right, what Cantor and all the others that use this line are really saying is become totally indigent then we'll help. What a great Conservative way to build a society.

I heard Ron Paul same the very same thing on NPR recently. He would even scrap Medicare, and when the interviewer asked how people would get care, he replied that there were charities out there.

Un-fucking-believable. :banghead:

17. Her relative is going to die
Sad story about life in America in the 21st century. Can you believe that in this country people die because they do not have access to health care. Unfortunately, even if the health care bill passes with a public option, it will not take effect in time to help this women's relative. There will be 100's of thousands who will die before any reform is actually in place to help out. Sad but true. And to think how many people would be alive today if health care reform would have been accomplished in the 90's.

21. Duhhhh....What Eric Cantor meant by "Government Programs,"
was plainly obvious. I guess I have to spell it out for you dunces. He meant that the sick woman should have gotten a gun and robbed bank so that when she gtes caught, she goes to prison where she could get treatment.

22. If I were queen...
I would make Eric Cantor, and the rest of his ilk, depend completely on charitable organizations and those "government programs" to pay medical bills. And I'd make those medical bills huge, just like so many of us are facing. He's watched that TV commercial with the goofy guy in the question mark suit once too often. Yes, there are government programs. Are they available to individuals? Almost never. They are awarded to organizations and grant programs who then distribute the money. How do you know which ones do what? Do you have 10 or 12 hours a day to spend researching this stuff and then applying for it? No? How about the money to pay some organization to search for you? Still no? Too bad. Guess you'll just have to go bankrupt.

The problem is these guys are whores. Plain and simple. They've been bought and paid for by Big Pharma and the Insurance Industry, and they are NOT going to disobey their corporate masters. The answer is the democrats becoming Democrats, growing a spine and a set of testicles and/or ovaries. Ever since Reagan, these jokers have had their tails between their legs. And what's truly pathetic is that their main fear seems to be that the repugs will call them names if they don't give in to every demand those bastards make.
