"The Fox Report" on Fox News, hosted by anchor Shepard Smith, ran a piece by reporter Dan Springer on how Canada's single-payer health care system is forcing Canadians to come to the United States for care because the waiting period for treatment is too long. The report was intended to contrast negatively with proposals in the U.S. to include a public option in health care reform, however Smith questioned whether the report they just ran was actually fair:

Of course you wonder if it's really a fair comparison when no one has introduced a single-payer system here. In fact a government-run option has barely been suggested, at least isn't included at the moment. We'd still have private health insurance here. So, I mean, it's different.
Springer defended the comparison by saying that some critics of a public option say it would inevitably lead to a single-payer system because despite their still being private insurers, there is no way they could compete with a plan funded by the government. Smith replied, "Of course the government says, they compete with FedEx and they compete with UPS, and you have options, and that's what they're suggesting here."

1. He's not the brightest bulb ...

... but ever since Katrina, he's been on the wrong network.

He might actually have a journalist in him ... somewhere ... maybe.

On a related note, it's just sad that a news anchor is compelled to question, on air, whether a story his network is running is actually fair.

3. I don't know that they can afford to keep him...
... since he obviously has at least two brain cells and they're rubbing together frequently. That over-qualifies him.

8. Hey! Rush hates Shep too
His stock keeps rising with me. Didn't Shep drop the f-bomb live on air a few months ago.

12. Rush's dislike would be considered an endorsement of Shep in my book.
Don't know about the f-bomb-----but Shep does get caught up in things.:-)

His screaming at FEMA from the hot overpass during the Katrina fiasco was some of the best live TV I have ever seen.

15. Yes, he did and it was great
It was a discussion on torture and the puke mouth pieces were all defending it and he said, "this is America. We don't fucking do this." Or words to that affect. Then he went on television and defended his position and refused to apologize.
:-)

4. Shep has his moments of sanity
He did a great job covering Katrina. I would love to see him move to a more progressive network - even as the 'centrist'. MSNBC could dump Joe & Mica and run with Shep.

14. Here is what I don't understand
We're told by conservatives that governmt-run health insurance will be a disaster. We're told about long lines and tangled messes of red tape, and about the government getting in between you and your doctor...

These are the same people who allegedly have unmoving faith in the power of the free market to decide what is and isn't right. Doesn't it make sense, then, that if government insurance was such a mess, that it would be driven out of the market place by Adam Smith's invisible hand? I mean, either the government plan is going to be impossible to deal with, or it isn't. If private insurance is that much better, it should have no problem competing, right?

I mean, if "the deep pockets of the government" create an insurance plan that private insurers can not compete with, then what was the point about the story about Canada?

... however, I have no idea where Fox gets those Canadian health horror stories from. Seriously folks, I have lived in Victoria (only 50 miles from Vancouver) for 40 years, and have never heard of any similar health "horror" stories. You'd think my fellow Canadians, who love to complain about the bus service and how badly the Vancouver Canucks always do, would be complaining all the time about sub-standard health care. But they don't. I just don't hear it. Anywhere.

Many of these health "horror" stories may be completely made up, or wildly exaggerated. Where did Fox even get these people from?

23. This Canuck is still doing his bit to find another Canadian who'll trade places with a US citizen.
From my perspective, the Maytag repairman is a party animal.
