Apparently the Bush administration has taken the Winston Churchill quote "History is written by the victors" into the video age. The official White House website is now sporting a very different version of President Bush's "Mission Accomplished" speech. In this exclusive video, Inside Minnesota Politics' Mike McIntee shows how the "Mission Accomplished" banner on the USS Abraham Lincoln has apparently been crudely cropped out of the video.

telling of the story in the future. in reality, things like this will simply add to the story of how history judges them - like we view nazi rallies or book burnings. the nazi rallies and book burnings, or stalin erasing people out of pictures with him - in the end these things didn't determine or even destroy history which is what their intentions were - rather they became history lessons themselves - lessons useful as markers for the future, warnings.

10. Very good point
Things like this will be pointed at as crude attempts to erase emabrassing moments.

Now that it's been saved on millions of hard drives around the world, this revisionism itself will be recorded for posterity.

Things like this will be Bush's legacy.

12. Although,
that black bar seems to be at the bottom of every video on the whitehouse site. Every random video that I clicked on had it. Don't get me wrong, I don't trust this administration even the slightest bit. But there may be less to this story than we think.

Or, in an effort to cover up the cover-up, they went into the archive and put black bars on everything else too... But I would think they have bigger cover-ups to be spending their time and energy on (Iraq, Abramoff, Diebold, Plame, etc.)

44. You're right,
there are videos without the bar, however, spend another 3 or 4 minutes clicking on more videos, and you will find plenty with the black bar. It seems to be a general technical thing which we may be reading into way too much. Sure, it works out better for them, but I think it's more out of dumb luck than a devious plot.

In any case, my point was just that this is somewhat of a non-issue that republicans would love for us to fixate on and trumpet as a big deal. It'll be yet another conspiracy theory which they can call us paranoid moonbats for. Don't let them have that pleasure. We have plenty of other accusations to lay upon the Bush administration which have far more substance and weight. Let's focus our energy on bigger things. Heading into '08 we need to start becoming more grounded and less angry. Which means not being impulsive over issues like this.

However, I also don't want to argue with you guys too much. I'm a team player and happy to bash Bush for being the naughty little chimp that he is. . .

58. But there is an issue with this video
I'm sure the official spin is that cropping it makes the video viewing better on the web site but this speech with the prominent 'Mission Accomplished' banner was the seminal moment for the administration in its Iraq war campaign. It's a tad too convenient that this one was cropped in this way. I would wager that some of the other videos with black bars across the bottom are also the result of cropping for content rather than clarity.

I doubt it's dumb luck. The only question is who made the choice to make this convenient edit.

14. Umm , I need this clarified ......
Apparently the Bush administration has taken the Winston Churchill quote "History is written by the victors" into the video age.

What exactly has Chimpy the Wonder Monkey and his horseshit administration ever "won" ?
An improper (and perhaps illegal) SCOTUS ruling gave Chimpy the presidency ; he was SELECTED , not elected in 2000.
2004 was Blackwell and Diebold ; not exactly overwhelming evidence of integrity .
Our Chimperor-In-Chief is going to go down in history as the only president to ever lose 2 wars ; and at the same time .....

Have they never even heard of a Quantel Video Paintbox? I don't think they even need that anymore, I bet any local T.V. station could do a better job than that. I could do a better job on that video on my home computer! Hell, If I can find the Video on-line, I will.

PLUS! They already had a cropped video back in September 2003 (or Fox News did, I'm not sure where The Daily Show got the video)

Here's proof in a 2003 Daily Show clip I uploaded to YouTube after "The Google" bought it (which was then quickly taken down), but then I re-uploaded it to another well know site that doesn't seem to be deleting Daily Show clips yet:

23. Slimy, sure. But they're more discreet than that.
Like someone pointed out, it seems there's a black bar on many older videos (those that are widescreen). So it's not exclusive to this video, and therefore not a big deal. Not to mention when you compare the video with actual pictures of the speech, it's clear the camera angle, even if pushed up a bit, would have been too low to show the banner anyway, cropped or no. See?

They merely replaced the speech video with video taken from a lower camera angle. Rather than that hugely dramatic MISSION ACCOMPLISHED RIGHT ABOVE HIS HEAD YAY AMERICA angle (pictured above) we all remember seeing that night. ;) It's still pretty slimy of them to wipe any trace of "Mission Accomplished" from the page, though.

29. Bush ties to accused terrorist?
Interesting news story on Reuters. Three US Citizens are being tried in Vietnam of suspected terrorist activities. One seems to have ties to Bush's Republican Party:

From Reuters:

"Seven people -- three U.S. citizens, one U.S. resident and three Vietnamese living in Vietnam -- were charged last week with "terrorist activities". These included bomb plots, delivering leaflets and jamming radio stations, prosecutors said"

"One of the defendants, Nguyen Thuong Cuc, 58, who goes by the name of Thuong Nguyen Foshee in the United States, has close ties with Bush's Republican Party in Florida."

I'd provide the link, but I'm not sure how.

34. White House erases some events entirely, like signing of NOFEAR Act
Edited on Tue Nov-07-06 08:53 AM by deep harm
On May 15, 2002, President Bush signed the NoFEAR Act, which
required Agencies to report data on discrimination and
whistleblower reprisal. Notice of the signing, and a photo of
Bush surrounded by African American activists, were
immediately published on the official White House website.
Months later, the White House quietly removed all mention of
the event, and subsequently the OPM attempted to gut
implementation of the new law.

Here is the official White House photo, as published on the
NoFEAR group's website:

Edited on Tue Nov-07-06 11:57 AM by SpreadItAround
Seriously, randomly click on videos of Bush's speech at whitehouse.gov and you'll find that some videos have the black bar and some do not, it's completely random and it wasn't done intentionally to block out the Mission Accomplished banner. Looks like it's there to facilitate scrolling text data.

I hate and mistrust Bush and everyone around him as the next guy and would not put anything past them but buying into this kind thing of makes us all look a little crazy.

Now if you would like to say that maybe they put the black bar randomly on some speeches and not on others so as to get people to believe that it's random, then I have a nice tinfoil hat for you.

...the only thing I can think of is that it's either for future formatting to widescreen or for scrolling text at the bottom.

Need a a/v nerd to chime in on it.

What I do know though is that it wasn't a deliberate effort by the * administration to rewrite history.

52. I think it goes a lot further than just the one video.
Edited on Tue Nov-07-06 01:08 PM by jaxhud
I think they've cut the bottom portion of a number of videos in an effort to obfuscate the fact they cut the top of the Mission Accomplished video and pushed the video up. You can see in other videos on the site, with black bars at the bottom, that they were orginally 4/3 videos because there is an inordinate amount of space between the top of Bush's head and the top-border of the screen, relative to the bottom of the subject (Bush). Cameramen do better framing of a subject than what the apparent editing suggests. Bush's 'Ministry of Sanitized Information' has simply cut the bottom off of those videos. But on the Mission Accomplished video they cut the top and pushed the rest up. Why go back and edit 4/3 videos to 16/9 anyway? What's the purpose of cutting away what was originally captured? I have a 16/9 TV and it of course still shows 4/3 video just fine. This is just another example of the Bush administrations's propaganda lie-machine.

Okay I just had to respond to the obvius plants in this thread about the black bar. Some footage has a large black bar which is the ticker and logo space from the original source. I realize others here know that, it's not a secret but a common format. The video here appears not to have a real ticker bar, but to be displaced to move the banner in the shot outside the frame leaving the black bar at the bottom.
