Now some can believe this is about looking for water

but I believe this is a military test for the Rods of god

Among the weapons the Air Force might deploy are space-based lasers, a space plane capable of delivering a half-ton payload anywhere in the world in 45 minutes, and the "rods from god." The rods are currently just a concept--and have been since the early 1980s--but, if the myriad technical and political hurdles to deployment could be overcome, the system could represent a tremendous leap forward in the military's ability to destroy underground, hardened facilities of the type that have allowed Iran and other rogue states to violate the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty with impunity.

HOW DO THE RODS WORK? The system would likely be comprised of tandem satellites, one serving as a communications platform, the other carrying an indeterminate number of tungsten rods, each up to 20 feet in length and 1 foot in diameter. These rods, which could be dropped on a
target with as little as 15 minutes notice, would enter the Earth's atmosphere at a speed of 36,000 feet per second--about as fast as a meteor. Upon impact, the rod would be capable of producing all the effects of an earth-penetrating nuclear weapon, without any of the radioactive fallout. This type of weapon relies on kinetic energy, rather than high-explosives, to generate destructive force (as do smart spears, another weapon system which would rely on tungsten rods, though not space-based).

Clearly the rods are a first-strike, offensive weapon. The nation's aging fleet of ICBMs, and its more modern Ohio-class submarines--each carrying 24 Trident missiles--will serve as an adequate nuclear deterrent well into the 21st century, but nuclear weapons cannot deter rogue states from developing their own nuclear arsenals.

I thin Iran is going to get a demonstration on how powerful the US Military weaponry is
Think about it

they need to know how much damage impact would be

24. without nuclear fall out
unless you hit a nuclear plant

this demonstration will be giving Iran something to think about

Now come on
think about this kids
if the Military said we are testing our weapons on the moon
the Earthlings would get ticked off

but NASA says we are looking for Ice cubes

Believe us
in fact
it almost slipped under the radar except for the reporters out there who brought it to light
then notice the news agency had to put out the propaganda cover story

29. Agreed....
The moral majority don't really think what NASA is doing, because its science , A theory ,
We'll see the outcome in the future.

when its not on the news then someone has to give it a twist
ROFL

Maybe they are looking for water
but I think its a bit dramatic to bomb the moon looking for it

5. Can people never get
their and there
your and you're

correct.

When I see those two mistakes, I am somewhat not persuaded by anything else.

And why would NASA do this, if Obama wanted to rid the world of nuclear weapons.

And how can the tests on Earth compare with those on the Moon?

but they have a program rods of god
they can take out Iran with out nuclear fall out

17. well this is from space to test this on the earth
some countries might get a bit ticked off

This type of weapon relies on kinetic energy, rather than high-explosives, to generate destructive force
so its from outer space

this has been in the military budget

one of the problems of our Bunker Buster weaponry it has DU nuclear material on it to penetrate

this using Kinetic energy leaves no radioactive material unless you bomb a nuclear power plant

21. But won't some of that kinetic energy
be burned up in the Earth's atmosphere?

Won't they have to have protective tiles like the shuttle does?

The atmosphere on the Moon and the Earth are two very different beasts, and no test on the Moon could be used to predict performance on Earth.

26. well yes and no
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinetic_bombardment

A kinetic bombardment is the act of attacking a planetary surface with an inert projectile, where the destructive force comes from the kinetic energy of the projectile impacting at very high velocities. The resulting extreme force can be explained by the formula EK = \frac{mv^2}{2}, where Ek is the kinetic energy, m the mass of the object and v its velocity. The concept is encountered in science fiction and is thought to have originated during the Cold War. When taken to a significant fraction of the speed of light, kinetic projectiles become relativistic kill vehicles.

Orbital bombardment is the act of attacking targets on a planet, moon or other such object from orbit around the object, rather than from an aircraft, or a platform beyond orbit. It is most often encountered in fiction, but has been proposed as a means of attack for several real-world weapons systems concepts, including kinetic bombardment and as a nuclear delivery system.

During the Cold War, the Soviet Union deployed a Fractional Orbital Bombardment System from 1968-1983. Using this system, a nuclear warhead could be placed in low Earth orbit, and later de-orbited to hit any location on the Earth's surface. While the Soviet Union deployed a working version of the system, they were forbidden by the Outer Space Treaty to place live warheads in space. The fractional orbital bombardment system was phased out in January 1983 in compliance with the SALT II treaty of 1979, which, among other things, prohibited the deployment of systems capable of placing weapons of mass destruction in such a partial orbit.

Orbital bombardment systems with conventional warheads are permitted under the terms of SALT II. Some of the proposed systems rely on large tungsten carbide/uranium cermet rods dropped from orbit and depend on kinetic energy, rather than explosives, but their mass makes them prohibitively difficult to transport to orbit,<2> and their effectiveness has not been proven.

If the creator of this video over-looked those simple-to-spot mistakes, it throws the entire video's validity into question.

10. Moon speaks...........
I am the man in the moon, and I OBJECT. You think I am made of Swiss cheese and another hole won't matter? Think again, it will rip my guts apart. When your cow jumped over me, I was fine with it - sure, I had to clean up the brown pie it left, but the spectacle as worth it. But this is despicable, and let this be a warning: It is October, and if you do this, I will not shine on your harvest.

:wtf:

28. Tungsten rods, you say?
Tungsten, as in the element that is mostly produced by our "enemy" china? (75% of world production in 2000)
Tungsten, that soft, brittle metal who's main use is lightbulb filaments due to a high melting point?
Do I need to mention that it is nearly twice as dense as lead? (19.25 grams per cubic centimeter as opposed to lead's 11)

So we're going to haul telephone pole-sized spikes that weigh nearly twice as much as an equal amount of lead due to being made from a pretty uncommon element into earth's orbit... And we're going to do so multiple times because, hey, we need at least a couple dozen of these things up there. All for the hopes of busting a bunker here or there?

Somebody's lying to you. Even if the idea itself weren't idiotic, the idea of using tungsten, when either graphite or other ceramics would be VASTLY cheaper and more effective (since, you know, they won't shatter if a piece of ice whacks them in the atmosphere) would make it so.

Might want to tuck this particular conspiracy in the back with David Icke and his "reptiloids"

32. I just met the LCROSS program manager -

- and he gave a fabulous talk at Space Park about this program. This is a significant experiment to find water. Water on the moon may totally change your grandchild's life. For the better.

This is not a weapons test and its completely moronic to think it is.
