Make Climate Change History - We Will Not Be Silenced have combined with Climate Counts to deliver a fabulous movie to push Climate Change Awareness.

Everyone's talking about global warming, but what can you personally do about it? Companies and the things you buy from them have a huge impact on climate change. When you make climate-conscious choices, you're sending a message to companies that climate change matters to you.

Peace

1. Fair enough ...
I get the point. But, "purchase = power". Somehow encouraging consumerism doesn't strike me as the best way to effect climate change.

What can you personally do about it? Stop eating meat. Animal agriculture is the single biggest polluter on the planet. Cattle-rearing alone generates more global warming greenhouse gases, as measured in CO2 equivalent, than transportation.

A vegetarian driving a Hummer does better by then environment than your average omnivore driving a Prius.

2. Purchase = Power
Hi,

The point is, that all people spend money, if you choose where you spend your money, you can make a difference. Cosumerism exists, are you saying that people shouldn`t spend money? Thats an idealistic dream that falls far short of realitity. You need power, you need to eat, you have a choice, spend money with companies trying to make a difference, or spend money with companies who don`t give a f**k. Remember Nestle and the whole deal about milk? It was consumers boycotting Nestle that forced them to change. Or Nike and the whole sweatshop fiasco. The list is endless.

Any effort to make companies change their ways should be commended, you say don`t eat meat, but again that is a very naive statement. By not eating meat, you encourage more agriculture. If the world turned vegetarian tomorrow, where is this food going to come from?

Dennis Weaver`s whole Ecolonomic philosophy, which was around long before the current global warming hysteria, simple stated, that everyone can make a difference. Controlling companies, who are the biggest polluter by witholding your hard earned dosh will produce far more dramatic results than by everyone turning vegetarian.

I understand what you are saying, and I agree, but in reality, where people can make a difference is by what they have control over.

Thank you for your insight though :)

Peace

4. Re: Purchase = Power
No doubt and I agree. And for those sensitive to their impact it's a good message. I'm just noticing an attitude by trendy greeners, (which are better than nothing), that they can buy their way out. Of course it's better as they're just going to buy some other form of trendy crap in place of it. I guess I'm speaking more to that.

I just replaced a refrigerator and wanter heater with energy star and a tank-less models, when I needed a new car I bought a Prius. I didn't need to go as high end as I did and could have gotten comparable products with comparable efficiency, but I wanted to support the technologies and the companies that were taking the lead. I get the intent of the message, I'm just seeing where it can be misinterpreted. And, the irony of the repeating phrase in the video, "Purchase = Power", that could just as easily be used in a hyper consumerist propaganda ad.

Regarding meat: The majority of all plant agriculture is used, rather wastefully, to feed factory farmed animals. It's the #1 cause of rain forest destruction; clearing land to raise soy to feed cattle. If everyone went vegetarian tomorrow, and assuming the selectively bred, human dependent livestock sub-species were gone, we would have a HUGE surplus of food, along with a HUGE reduction of waste water runoff, a 50% reduction in the antibiotics used in this country, along with far fewer growth hormones seeping into our drinking water. Is nasty stuff.

Cheers.

3. ok, which companies?
Obviously Exxon is out. Home Depot, and anybody else advertising on Fox.

Somebody need a comprehensive list of companies and an 'resume' of offenses and positive contributions.

Anybody know of such a list? how about listing some here?

5. Companies
There is an aspect that many people fail to recognise, and this is where their dollars can have a huge impact - China

China is not only the biggest polluter in the world, they provide slave labour for many American companies which in turn undermines US manufacturing (what is left of it). Furthermore, the Chinese control the value of their currency to give them an unfair advantage in the global economy. I would like to think a US president would do something about it, but sadly our current idiot thinks china is a cup and saucer.

The purpose of Climat Counts is to wake the sleeping giant that is the American people. Certainly Cameron Diaz can look cute having flown to the Live Earth show to make a statement about "global warming", but lets face it, she isn`t the brightest tool in the shed.

Again we go back to what Dennis Weaver was pushing for the last 20 years of his life, that nothing is going to change until the American public decides to change. Sustainability (which is Stoneyfield Yoghurts main philosophy, and these are the people behind Climate Counts) is also the idea presented by Dennis ( www.ecolonomics.org ). What I found appalling about Live Earth, was it was nothing more than a glorified attempt by artists long past their sell by date to revive their careers, meanwhile people like Dennis, who met Al Gore in Washington numerous times, were ignored.

We cannot rely on our politicians to listen to us, Bush hasn`t been impeached, kids are still dying needlessly in Iraq, US manufacturing is in major trouble etc etc. We need a revolution, not one possibly envisaged by the Founding Fathers, but one that puts the power of the gun into people`s hands. That power is purchasing power IMHO :)

Peace
