18. Moore should just make movies - he's too immature for live tv.
Edited on Wed Jul-11-07 10:44 AM by Umbram
Person A: "My statistics say X"
Person B: "My statistics say Y"
Person A: That's a lie! Go to my webpage and see that my statistics say X.

Moore has a good message and in my mind is generally right at a macro level, but
he defends himself with enough fallacious reasoning that it degrades his
credibility.

Moore's got the right message, as always, he's just delivering it geared for the
lowest common denominator of human reasoning.

Edit: Oops, this was suppose to be a reply to the whole thread, not this particular post.

20. The last thing Michael wanted to do was to try to repeat his research in a 10 sec. sound bite.
Edited on Wed Jul-11-07 04:36 PM by OmelasExpat
Sanjay obviously tried early on to get the discussion dragged down in numbers and sources because he knows that there is no way that Michael or anyone else can do that. Even if Michael had the facts and figures written down next to him, he would only get halfway through a source reference before Larry King breaks in saying "We've only got just a few more seconds ...". And at the end of it all, the entire segment would have only been about "Michael's source says $751 and the BBC's source says $763.", and none of the real macro issues would have been addressed. On purpose. This is the way Larry King and CNN always neuter real discussion - by making it clear that the responsibility to fulfill their legal responsibilities to their advertizers takes precedence over the importance of the discussion itself.

Michael did precisely what he needed to do. He kept the discussion on the macro issues that are important to most of the viewers and that most of them have direct experience of. The tack the medical insurance company takes to defend their paycheck is to acknowledge that the system is badly in need of repair (as Sanjay dutifully does), but that all will be well if we just focus in on a few numbers, tweak a few tax laws or regulations, and have a lot of patience in waiting for things to change. To do that, they want people endlessly debating about false issues like "$751 versus $763". Michael didn't take that bait. He says that the entire system needs to be overhauled - it is unrepairable as it is.

Michael brought up figures only to point out Sanjay's misrepresentations of what he said in the movie, to point out the general dishonesty of his approach. Anyone interested in questioning Michael's numbers and sources should look for the complete list on his website, not in the anarchic forum of Larry King's show.

21. In addition
(great comments btw) ... Sanjay's only purpose obviously is to create an impression of controversy. It's difficult for anyone to handle that kind of challenge, including Moore

5. Wow, how hard is it to get some people to see the truth?
It is so frustrating to see people like Gupta who, even though they have been proved wrong, continue to spin and distort reality. This is a great nation, but for some reason there are many who stand to gain by making sure her problems never get fixed. Michael Moore is a great American who has taken on a hard fight. He needs our support!

11. Laughing hysterically.
Michael Moore is a genius. He weathers the attacks in a way that just puts more attention on the issue, it's terrific.
I do feel a bit bad for Sonjay Gupta, he has always seems like a pretty sincere, genuine and upstanding guy. He was like an unfortunate bystander who got caught in the crossfire between Michael's and the media, which is compldetely legitimate on Michael's part. So my regards go out to Mr. Gupta. I felt like the arguing over the details of the data was silly because either way you looked at it, the conclusion was roughly the same. But ultimately, it was a really engaging discussion, and that is a product of Michael's genius.

12. Very silly
But it had to be done. Moore didn't attack like this after F-9/11 came out and the toadies found one or two "questionable" facts that they could use to claim the entire film was biased BS and shout it 24/7 on cable news.
That's just what Sonjay tried to do in this case. Well, he's fudged the numbers so it all must be taken with a grain of salt. Not this time. Nice to see MM calling them on it early and often.

13. Link to Gupta's so-called expert

http://www.michaelmoore.com/sicko/news/article.php?id=10021

Here is a link to PAUL H. KECKLEY'S CURRICULUM VITAE

Does CNN think in the age of instant recall we won't check up and verify?

CNN wants to create just some little inkling that they have uncovered a flaw but the problem is that they didn't count on so many people out there looking at the sources. People that don't take so-called experts like Paul Keckley who is a professional health industry tool at his word.

Big thanks to Mike for taking on CNN.

14. his blinking reallllly irritates me
Sanjay, as I said two days ago, really was humiliated by Moore's correction of him, so he wanted to get a chance to tell why he chose to rip on Moore, like he was some kind of movie critic arguing about the 'cherry picking' of facts.

I could only take one segment - I don't wanna h8 mr. Gupta, but this makes me irksome, as he said about Michael - because instead of bitching about Moore's numbers, why didn't he go after the insurance/pharm/medical corporations???

DISTRACTION from the REAL problem - that's why.

15. Sonjay Gupta
is corporate media's answer to Bill Frist. CNN and other corporate media outlets are behind the curve. Everyday they lose more viewers because they can be fact checked by anyone with Internet access.
One of Moore's chief complaints is the way they shilled for the war criminal Bush Administration and continue to provide cover for Bush lies. He makes a valid point that the media reporting is skewed because the corporate media outlets won't report a negative story about advertisers, and as a result, we the people who rely on them for valid information are damaged.
When was there a story covering defective products by major advertisers, or a story about the widening gap between the ruling class and the working class?
Because of corporate greed, the working class has a reduced living standard while upper management sends money to off shore tax havens where the money never circulates into the economy. This allows upper management to hold even more sway over workers who are forced to accept lower wages. How come no corporate media outlet covers the Bush cartel's money laundry, Halliburton?
When they stop spending news time on Paris Hilton's dog and devote news time to issues effecting our lives, viewers might start returning.
As for embedded reporters like Gupta: Don't expect honest reporting from someone reliant on those protecting them and dictating what can and can't be reported. That's called propaganda.
The move by the FCC to end net neutrality is to ensure the flow of information is controlled by the ministry of propaganda.
When we see the Bush Administration hauled away in irons on the corporate media, we'll know democracy is is on the march. Until the corporate elites and their handmaidens in the Republican Party are held accountable we'll continue to be on the road to third world status. Sonjay Gupta and CNN, among others, are working to ensure a permanent underclass that can be manipulated and abused by the new aristocracy.

That color being bright Republican red.

He wouldn't want to change the American health care system, as he said so clearly on this program.
