3. Cenk raises an important point .... |
|
Regarding Conservatives: when other people access benefits, it's because they're lazy or pimping the system; but when Conservatives access the system, it's because they truly need the assistance.
For a final Ethics paper in my Master's program I am writing about what I believe to be the key distinction between liberals and conservatives: while both groups are primarily concerned with self-interest, they express it is different terms. The Liberal worldview recognizes that bad things can and do happen to people, so in order to protect themselves should they befall bad times, they seek to ensure that they is a safety net. If, the liberal is fortunate enough never to need assistance, that's OK ... it was for just in case. On the other hand, the conservatives' worldview suggests that people get what they deserve. They are firm in their belief that because they work hard, go to church, are industrious and smart enough, they will not be subject to bad things . Therefore, they don't care about a safety net because they do not believe that it will cost them more than it will ever benefit them.

5. I don't believe that Liberals are primarily concerned with self interest |

if we were, then we wouldn't care about stopping wars that kill innocent people, world hunger, endangered species, civil rights for all, stopping factory farming etc. etc. I strongly support equal marriage rights for all and I'm both hetero and single. I strongly support the funding of AIDS prevention programs in Africa and I don't know a soul in Africa, I strongly support food stamp programs even though I never expect to use them. I think the difference really does come down to those who are not selfish and consider humanity and all life on earth a global community deserving of respect, kindness, consideration and care, vs. those who really do only think about what benefits them personally.

6. They probably only created that terminology for |
|
the conservatives that were using it. That way they can still say the greedy poor are on food stamps, while the ailing rich are getting a little assistance. Same as when, after Katrina, the black kids were looting and the white kids were merely "finding" food. Bush probably had a whole department devoted to wordplay.
