6. A permanent "War" tax 90% of all income over $500K per year
regardless of how it is earned with the only exception being "unearned", income like lottery and other types of jackpots which could be held by the treasury and paid out in increments of $500K per year for the life of the winner and then all remaining $$ would go to the treasury.

Draft starting at 60 years old and going down till all ranks filled. No deferments except those covered under the employees leave act or serious personal illness or prior service. Many older Americans like myself (59) could fill non-combatant positions by the thousands, hell I would volunteer if they allowed it. If I remember correctly, for every combat troop there are around 17 others backing him/her up. Increasing the size of our military could stop the repeated tours in the combat zones.

LOL!
I like it. Will never happen but I like it. Most war is promoted by old men - many of whom have stock in the companies that profit by wars. Any "excess" funds this generates for the treasury could be used to fund health care and infrastructure here

51. Great ideas
Maybe your draft eligibility should be proportional to your personal wealth. WEALTHY = 1A draftworthiness. You wanna see the warring grind to a halt!

As far as 17 folks backing up one combat sort - so much of that support is now contracted civilian work that it's disgusting. Not to mention the grossly inflated cost of such!

8. At what point do we cease sending money down the military rathole at the expense of rebuilding
this nation?

I get so damned sick of hearing politicians telling us there's no money for infrastructure, building new schools, health care reform and other things that benefit all of us. But when it comes to the Pentagon, they get everything they want, even though they have historically been the biggest source of government waste in history.

86. I never said I liked the war....
I said Michael Moore has no idea what he's talking about, nor do any of us, about war strategy. We're not privy to the secret briefings that our officials receive on a daily basis. It's one thing to not like war....well, because it's war....and opine as such. I got no problem there. It's quite another to opine, at least intelligently while not being disingenuous, about strategy and who's linked to whom.

What? He read it in the freakin' paper or some knuckleheads book, without any real clue about what's happening behind the scenes, and suddenly he's a freakin' expert??? Gimme a break! Yeah, I no more want MM opining about war strategy than I want nimble-dicked Hannity opining about....well, anything!!! Simply because you agree that the war sucks doesn't make MM any more right or wrong, for that matter. If that were true, then the righties would be as right as we are.

What part of "you don't have a freakin' clue besides what you read in the papers" don't you copy?

22. Use your own instincts, folks! Michael Moore knows this is all crap . . . but . ..
he's still trying to be Mr. Nice Guy --

That's gotten his documentaries out and heard --

But, no one like Michael Moore is going to lead us out of this desert --

In the end, it's up to us.

Are there just not enough of us disadvantaged yet?

Because if you look back on history it's the most abused among us who finally

bring forth the revolution ... and I mean only a non-violent revolution.

We see that over and again with homosexuals who have used their intelligence to fight

for their freedom --

We saw it with African-Americans who fought largely on their own for civil rights and

ending Segregation, Inc. --

We see it now in the struggle of Latinos --

And women, of course, are still conducting their non-violent campaign for equality.

How many millions of impoverished and sick citizens do we need to get this thing moving?

38 million citizens now on food stamps!!

And when did we last hear Obama say one word about the homeless or impoverished among us?

Anything about throwing out NAFTA or the other unjust trade agreements?

War on unemployment, maybe?

I'm so sick and tired of hearing the canard, "We'll be there for xyz more number of years so we can train the Iraqi/Afghan "security forces" to take over when we leave." Horseshit!!! We've been there about as long as it takes to "train" a high-school graduate to be an M.D.!!!

It shouldn't take as long to train a "security force" as it does to educate and train a medical doctor!

Stop feeding us the official narrative about politician making mistakes. We did not get into Iraq because of intelligence failure, it was deliberate lies, the real reasons for our involvement cannot be revealed because no one, even in the RW would accept it. All wars are based on lies and this latest Afghan surge is no different. Obama is not making any "mistake", he is following the "agenda".

34. I think he is uncomfortable with directly undermining Obama
probably he is under the impression this administration is as close to anything liberal the US Presidency is likely to ever get.

It is either deliberate, as to not undermine the popular movement that got Obama elected. Or is part of the stages of coping, with denial being one of the early ones.

Some people need just a couple of instances to get the hint of where things really stand, others need more, and lastly others never get the memo no matter how much evidence to the contrary they are shown.

Even though DU likes to paint Obama like Bush---he's not. He said clearly in his speech last night and we all know very well that Pakistan is a sovereign nation and we have no authority to do anything there. ie That means invade even if we have enough evidence that warrants it. I think it would be assinine anyway. Secondly, it would escalate the situation even more.

Blackwater is conducting operations in Pakistan & plenty of US drone bombs have been dropped, while Obama has been in power. Whatever came out of Obama's mouth about Pakistan's independence, is just talk.

59. Or how about stopping war profiteering?
Harry Truman compared war profiteering to treason. No obscene profits = no war.

Boy those days are long gone.

I loved MM's response to Obama's speech. Michael Moore for President...!

63. Love his movies, but can't get behind him on this one...
Opposing a war for the sake of opposing War is irresponsible and entirely too idealistic. Not that I expect any less from Mr. Moore, who if you skin the onion, is really just an ideologue wishing for rainbows and unicorns in a world where rainbows show more often in oil slicks and unicorns are just goats with their horns surgically altered for our amusement....
(I still like his movies though)

*takes breath*

Anyway, I'm what you'd call a liberal-leaning independent. I opposed the Iraq war, was a big Dean supporter because of it (yes, even after the "scream"). Later on, the Iraq war was one major reason that I didn't vote for McCain (yeah, in this case the independent part of me was temporarily over-ruling the liberal part), the other reason was Dumbass from Alaska.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that I support Obama's threading of this needle. It must have been an impossible decision to make, politically it's a red hot potato. His base is divided, the republicans are only going to give him partial support on the effort and pretty much he's not going to pick up any votes from this or makeup any political capital.

I look at it as just another mess that George W. Bush left for him to clean up. Something that should have been wrapped up in a pretty bow years ago, had Georgie Porgy not taken his eye off the ball. I don't believe that Obama has the luxury of just leaving Afghanistan, and frankly I think that would have been an entirely wrong-headed approach. After all, our divestment in Afghanistan (after we helped spend the Soviets out of the country) was directly responsible for the rise of the Taliban and the eventual harboring of Al Qaeda that facilitated the attacks on New York. With Pakistan now under threat as well, we simply cannot abandon the area militarily. My biggest hope is that the euphoria over the change in US administration abroad, will translate into a big contribution (troops, civilians or just raw capital) from our allies.

The defense contractors win again, they keep getting rich while our soldiers die or have to live the rest of their lives maimed one way or another.

92. Michael's Slopposition to the Afghanistan Speech
Walt Kelly - Slopposition

Oh, once the opposition was completely opposed,
To all the supposition that was generally supposed,
But now the superstitions that were thought to be imposed,
Are seen by composition to be slightly decomposed.

That's what happens when the Left's opposition to war suddenly turns Right into a bloody surge...
Democrats get slightly decomposed!

95. Michael Moore's " Good Heart "
Do you really think OBAMA linked the troop increase to the fantastical " Exit Strategy " not to placate his left base , and to sell the troop increase ( I hate the Surge 'crap )TROOP INCREASE to get his base on board , of course . He could have had an exit strategy months ago and the political theater in my opinion by McCain criticizing the " exit strategy " is just that . . political theater , by the controlled opposition .

History and evidence proves , starting w/ OBAMA's manufactured straw man assertion , Bush " took his eyes off the Ball " by that time Billion were spent , thousands of civilians were killed , Billions dollar Bases were built, and if bush couldn't defeat the Taliban , we'll DUH , nor could the British , Alexander the not so Great , etc etc etc . Obama and the military Industrial Complex knew they had to prepare and manufacture consent for increase of the WAR. And the Bush Failure in Afghanistan is the perfect line . . to get military rolling , got to clean up , yup stupid liberals will believe , it's just a clean up bush's mess thang , ya that's the ticket .

Here's the Fn REALITY , The Taliban went to Houston Texas for OIL Seminar and to work on an OIL PIPELINE in the late 90s and was even represented by Leyla Helms daughter of CIA Helms , director , ya its the obvious connection . Taliban got bad PR and they refused deal bcs they couldn't get open pipeline to take % of oil through Afghanistan , which actually makes good business sense , no matter how bad they were (not to bad to do business with ha ) . OIL , PIPELINES , limiting China , surrounding Russia & Iran . BASES to launch aTTACKS .

And after they turned Iraq into Bantustan , divided cities , ethnically cleansed , Barriers and Gates w/ retina scan ID for all Iraqis set up by U.S. and then paid off of the resistance , THEN they could "focus " on Afghanistan. So it really wasn't about Bush forgetting bout ole Afghanistan, too busy bcs of golf or losing his globe . It's a CON JOB by OBAMA , PLAIN AND SIMPLE ..THEY POLICY OF full SPECTRUM Dominance AS WRITTEN ABOUT by his mentor Brzezinski - "controlling Eurasia and subjugating Africa " has been planned for YEARS . For A. the Caspian Oil Pipeline through Afghanistan , creating BASES to launch attack and pivot on any country in Region , hence why OBAMA is escalating U.S. military in Region , pulling troops out of IRAQ AND replacing those with Mercenaries . . AND NOW ...OBAMA and mouth piece for Pentagon the complicit CNN are manufacturing consent for attacking SOMALIA & YEMEN , on and on and on ...actually the war on Somalia has been going on for years , just covered up by media .

It's not even OBAMA's war , it's the U.S, Governments War and Pentagon's war and it will continue long after OBAMA completes his phase of escalation of their plans AND THE BEAT GOES ON and because he's "cool" plays hoops Liberals will over look the blown up Bodies by the thousands , over look KARZAI REGIME allegedly involved in DRUGS , Who also STOLE the election and over saw the increase 12 X of poppy production AFTER invasion , ya Taliban cut poppy by 90 % according to UN , look it up . Add that to OIL .

It's A PERMANENT OCCUPATION PEOPLE AND YOU'RE PAYING FOR IT .. AND " THE COSTS OF WAR IS SOCIALIZED AND THE PROFITS ARE PRIVATIZED " WELCOME TO BAGHRAM PRISON , INMATES FROM GUANTANAMO ...

NOT Iraq or Afghanistan so WHY THE HELL are we going to Iraq and Afghanistan? I get either:

1. Dumb, blank stare (crickets) or;
2. some mealy-mouthed excuse about what a bad guy Saddam was and how bad the Taliban is

Yea. Sadaam was bad (nevermind that we CREATED AND FUNDED the sonofabitch ourselves - pfft!) and yea the Taliban are nasty. THEY'VE ALWAYS BEEN NASTY - what does THAT have to do with 9-11 or "al Queda" (IF such an entity even EXISTS) ???

crickets . . .

103. right you are . . . and it remains an open question as to who . . .
Edited on Thu Dec-03-09 04:31 AM by OneBlueSky
was in on the planning of the whole operation . . . some guy sitting in a cave in Afghanistan? . . . not bloody likely . . .

MIHOP (MadeItHappenOnPurpose)? . . . maybe, at least for aspects of it . . .

LIHOP (LetItHappenOnPurpose)? . . . bloody likely, if you look at all the evidence with an open mind and a little common sense . . .

FIHOP (FacilitatedItHappeningOnPurpose)? . . . actually, this is the MOST likely reality -- again, looking at the evidence dispassionately and not letting the "official story" cloud your perception . . .

but, hey . . . fighting a war in Afghanistan keeps these kinds of questions from being asked, don't it . . . so we lose a couple thousand more of our own military and who knows how many Afghanis . . . "just a little collateral damage, don'tcha know . . . not to worry . . . we got this one!" . . .

yeah . . . right . . . :grr:

PS . . . were there ANY Afghani hijackers? . . . I do recall some prominent Pakistanis as having allegedly played a significant role . . . some of our local "assets," I do believe . . .

PSS . . . what happened on 9/11 was used to justify everything from the Patriot Act to invading Iraq to hanging Saddam to trashing Afghanistan prior to occupying it . . . how conveeeeeeenient . . .

108. I vote FIHOP
And I'm SICK of 9-11 being used as an excuse for WORSE crimes against this country and humanity than 9-11 itself was, no matter who did it.

This country doesn't have a damn leg to stand on when it comes to human rights, pre-emptive war, morality, or anything else, considering its actions surrounding this. Not even a half a leg. It's disgusting and embarrassing. And OBAMA is on his bandwagon too now. Ugh.
