An intervention during the depoliticized, sanitized commemoration of the 45th Anniversary of Mario Savio’s famous speech. "We will not permit the museumification of Berkeley’s radical past, especially now, as we enter into a new cycle of struggle. The Free Speech Movement is not a way to sell coffee, nor is it a rhetorical sop the administration can use to pacify the existing movement."

1. Mario Savio - look him up - For those who don't know
Edited on Fri Dec-04-09 02:18 AM by GreenTea
Savio' dedication, his powerful communication, via his passion, truth and insightful foresight of what was to occur, where we are now...trashed by the Regents, (soon to be) Gov Reagan-types, the corporate republicans and the rulers who needed to dismiss this thorn, this progressive voice even as it was evolving they were dismantling it all with bullshit & glitter knowing we'd all be sucked in by the repetitive corporatism & materialism as we've "progressive" today....

I love to hear the extremely bright Savio speak back then at Cal Berkeley..as raw as he may seem to many today...though nothing as obsolete as how we furiously forgot, as we are today....inevitably, as Savio certainly knew....but still he tried. - What else could he do, as young people (almost exclusively, the poor) were being sent off to die for imperialism, corporatism!

2. There's a great documentary called Berkeley in the Sixties
that is played on PBS, sometimes on Free Speech TV or on Link. It has footage of Mario and also interviews some of the organizers that were active at the time. :hi:

4. Welcome to DU, winstars!
In a different doc, I found out that Mario worked at Cody's bookstore at the time.
