Cenk breaks down the question "Did Obama lie about Afghanistan troop withdraw", citing the statements in the past two days by General Jones, Defense Secretary Gates, and SOS Clinton and how Obama seeks to please the right and placate the left and ending up forgetting the placating the left part. Do you think Cenk thinks Obama is lying? The answer is a resounding YES!

1. I DO remember what Obama said about Afghanistan during the campaign,
but I recall that he said he would sent in 2 brigades, about 7,000 troops. I missed the part where he said that later his first year in office he would pledge to send over 4 times that number if the general in charge there twisted his arm and publicly lobbied for more troops. I now have no doubts that in the coming months if the generals in Afghanistan say they need more troops that he will send thousands more in addition to the 30,000. I would also not be surprised to hear that he has a secret plan to end the war.

Obama has the American Disease: he wants everyone to like him. Republicans don't like him and he can forget about hugs from them. They will, however, take and demand all they can get and when all is said and done they will vote against him anyways. Maybe it is time to dance with the ones that brought you.

I was too young to vote in 1968, but I am plenty old enough to vote now.

2. TFC has the solution

Trouble is, it'll have to be state by state, which means we get actual representation round about the 22nd Century by which time the planet is underwater.

5. Who can we vote for?
He asks who can we vote for, now that Obama has proven he is not the "peace" candidate he made himself out to be. How about Kucinich? He actually wants to get us out of these foreign wars of aggression and is a man of real principle. He also does not support the banking elite that Obama has (voluntarily or involuntarily) surrounded himself with. The very same bankers that got bailed out while the American people got nothing.

7. The powers that be would never let him win
He's marginalized and belittled in the press and by his own party powers.

He won't have the funding to compete and unfortunately there is not a strong grass roots movement for progressive causes.

The nation is dumbing down and easily manipulated. It really is a race to the bottom and we are going to get there.

Then--we'll see what happens.

6. It will get worse
The Dems will take a hit in 2010.

Any progressive reform that was going to happen needed to happen immediately.

What I don't want to hear Obama and the Dems say after 2010 is: "We just don't have the numbers to get things done."

Uh huh.

Sorry. That boat sailed.

8. Neo Con Bandwagon
I just hope the American people do not reflexively jump on the neo-con bandwagon in 2010.

11. a choice of frying pans
Oh sure, we'll be presented with the enviable choice of jumping from the old change-nobody-can-believe-in Obama frying pan into the neo-con Pukin Palin frying pan. Ain't the great privilege of "living" in the greatest democracy ever sold just wunnerful? Heads, we was scrod; tails, we's screwed.

12. We must find Progressive candidates for every congressional primary
Then we must vote for Progressive. If your congress talks progressive, but does not vote progressive, he is not progressive, and needs to be defeated in the primary.

OR, you get more of the same.

13. Cenk Uygur speaking nonsens! - WH: July 2011 Afghanistan Withdrawal ''Locked In''
White House: July 2011 Afghanistan Withdrawal ''Locked In''

"After the briefing, Gibbs went to the president for clarification. Gibbs then called me to his office to relate what the president said. The president told him it IS locked in - there is no flexibility. Troops WILL start coming home in July 2011. Period. It's etched in stone. Gibbs said he even had the chisel."

'No Afghanistan withdrawal in 2011'

Mark Mardell | 17:56 UK time, Friday, 4 December 2009

The US won't pull out of Afghanistan in 2011.

President Obama's top national security adviser, who has played a key part in designing the new Afghanistan and Pakistan strategy, has been trying to clear up some confusion about the exit strategy.

Gen James Jones told me that "in no manner, shape or form" would the US withdraw from Afghanistan in 2011.

In his speech on Tuesday, President Obama for the first time put a date on the beginning of the end of the United States presence in Afghanistan.

He said "these additional American and international troops will allow us to accelerate handing over responsibility to Afghan forces, and allow us to begin the transfer of our forces out of Afghanistan in July of 2011. Just as we have done in Iraq, we will execute this transition responsibly, taking into account conditions on the ground."

While it was a necessary political message to those Americans who are doubtful about this war, sweetening the pill of the troop increase, it has worried many in the region, where some have interpreted it starkly as meaning that America will pull out in a year and a half's time.

Gen Jones was deeply involved in designing the new strategy, attending all 10 meetings between the president and his top advisers at which the strategy was discussed. And he told me that wasn't so.

He said that "with a relentless application of this new force in 2011 we will be successful in reaching our goals...That will allow us to start pulling some of our forces out. So there is no contradiction."

I put it to him that that wasn't the way the speech had been seen in the region. This was his response:

"Its very important that people in Afghanistan hear this very clearly: this is not a withdrawal of the United States from Afghanistan in 2011, it is a decision to turn over to the Afghans some of the responsibility where they are ready to accept that responsibility. But in no manner, shape or form is the United States leaving Afghanistan in 2011."

edit for update: Defense Sec. Gates just said on MTP that the US is NOT leaving Afghanistan in July 2011.
