8. Actually, Cenk, back in the day, lots and lots of Americans

owned land. Many were small farmers. We didn't have much industry at that time. Even John Adams, a lawyer, is portrayed as doing his own chores with his family's animals and land. There wasn't a whole lot of white-collar work either. So, farming and owning land were the rule -- outside the South where slaves did a lot of the work.

Immigrants often came as indentured servants. But once they had worked the price for their passage over here off, they could buy land fairly easily. And of course, land was given to the people who served in the Revolutionary Army as part of their pay.

I'm not saying everyone owned land, but a lot of people did. That was the plan. If you worked, you could save and buy land. There was a lot of land that had not yet been legally claimed, to which legal title had not been awarded. When Kentucky then Ohio, then the Indiana territory and finally the west opened up, even more people acquired and owned land.

14. That bit about black people being 3/5 of a person...

I don't think there's any mention of black people (or slaves) in the original Constitution. That 3/5 business was part of one of the compromises that were enacted to delay the Civil War (I'd have to do some investigating to see which one). Another example of what you get when you give right-wingers their way: The South wanted to consider black people as property- not people- except when it came to election time. Then (and only then) they wanted them counted as people so that they'd have more representation in the House.

I know it's nitpicking- Just sayin'.

The people of Arlington should not stand for this kind of representation. This mayor is an outspoken racist elitist and should be forced to retract his statements or be thrown out of office.

I hope the good people of Arlington will not allow their Mayor to smear their town's name in the national media any longer. If you live in Arlington, start a petition to recall him today!
