given by the Native Americans and decorated by children from the state...but I am writing this so everyone will know it is also a symbol of the Pagans. You see, Christmas trees come from the Pagan Celebration of Winter Solstice and they were originally called a Yule Tree. We call this holiday of the Winter Solstice Yule. We brought the tree in to decorate as it is a symbol of the eternal life of the Earth Mother and the Sky-Father and the Sun/son/child. It shows the people that even in the cold and death of winter..there is life. The Yule tree is eternally green with that life. Yule is a celebration of the Return of the Light/rebirth of the Sun/son-God to the Goddess in his form as child. This may sound slightly familure to many as yes, it is indeed the same ancient story that is used by the "new" religion called Christianity as well as many other older Religions and Cultures other than the Pagans..with just a few name changes. Earth people have always celebrated the Return of the Light as it means life or death and so they decorated the Yule tree with lights. We see this in todays Christmas lights. The Pagans also gave gifts at this time..and so we have that tradition as well that is much older than written history that has now come down to Santa (The Spirit of Giving) and gifts in todays modern world. After the Yule holiday, we pagans cut down the branches off the Yule tree...and later on in the Spring we put it up outside and tie ropes or ribbons on the top and dance around the pole (old Yule tree) and we call it the May pole. At that time it is a fertility symbol and the people dance for abundance. When that year's Yule time comes around, we cut down the May pole and give the pieces out to the community as they are considered good luck. They are burned in the fires when the new trees are brought in and are called The Yule Log. This completes the circle of life symbolism of the Yule Tree. We Pagans are proud and happy to share the tradition of a lighted tree with Christians as well as all others. We are also happy to see it at the White House every year.

3. is it tradition to say 'it worked' after lighting the tree? same thing with the Obama tree lighting |

did you notice also, the Democrat from Arizona recited from the original pledge of allegiance and not the post 1954 version in her comments - that must make the right wingers' blood boil.
