3. It's not a speech on secret societites |
|
it's a speech to journalists asking them to help guard state secrets. The stuff about the secret societies is the premise of the speech, telling the audience what they already believed, to be followed by a "but..." which was the point of the speech.
I've seen this before, it's edited so it looks like JFK is warning against secret societies, and of course suggesting that that's why he was killed.

...to so easily write off the speech's potential other meaning (that of being directed toward a shadow government or groups bent on tyranny).
I can go with your argument. I'm not saying it doesn't have persuasive power. Still, your interpretation doesn't sit perfectly with me. You quite easily overlook the power of the words the President intentionally chose: "Monolithic", "Opposed around the world", "Guerrillas by night instead of armies by day", as if the Russians did not have an army, etc. As if members who "opposed us" were located in one terrain. He denounces the notion of the 'secret society' in the same breath as he acknowledges a 'monolithic and ruthless conspiracy' which threatens us (Democracy), and there seems to be nothing unbecoming about taking him straightforwardly on these terms given the way he puts them to use.
