Nothing deep. Nothing political. Two minutes of the Obamas waving from their hotel in Norway.

The reaction from the HUGE crowd (and the beauty of the entire scene) is what makes this worth watching. The louder the crowd yells, the more the Obamas can't keep from beaming. This is your President, folks.

2. I know. I saw this video on the news this morning and was blown away by that crowd
And the "fairy tale" quality of the whole scene. It's really quite pretty, isn't it?? :)

4. My favorite wingnut sent me a link to a story on how pissed the Norwegians are
because Obama skipped a dinner with the king or something. I just sent him an email with this link & the caption "Norweegians boo, hiss at Obamas." Heh, heh.

7. Excellent! There is a thread in GD-P from a Norwegian praising Obama and his speech to the Heavens
And there are a few posters (most of whom I'm guessing are not European) there claiming "Europeans are sick of America." Not that facts and truth have ever distracted people like that anyway, huh??

5. I wonder for their sanity if they'd still do that after the turd of a speech.

9. We will never have a perfect peace as we have evidenced in history.....
But the fact that you can boil down such issues
that have dogged us throughout humanity's existence
into a neat snarky soundbyte only says that you are simple as they come,
even if you're so impressed with yourself.

10. The fact is that I can boil down this issue to a simple statement.
War is never right. Diplomacy is always right. Done properly it ALWAYS works. If Europe stood in concert in 1935 and told Hitler that the world would not stand for his tyranny, 100 million people would still have their lives. Even a war to protect further injustices is not a just war. There are no just wars. It is plainly that simple.

I am not impressed with myself I am disgusted by the Bush-display of a speech that was given today. Let us only hope that such a statement isn't taken to heart.

26. The Weight of Nothing
The Weight of Nothing

Tell me the weight of a snowflake," a coalmouse asked a wild dove.

"Nothing more than nothing," the dove answered.

"In that case I must tell you a marvelous story," the coalmouse said. "I sat on a fir branch close to the trunk when it began to snow. Not heavily, not in a raging blizzard. No, just like in a dream, without any violence at all. Since I didn't have anything better to do, I counted the snowflakes settling on the twigs and needles of my branch. Their number was exactly 3,471,952. When the next snowflake dropped onto the branch--nothing more than nothing -- as you say -- the branch broke off."

Having said that, the coalmouse ran away.

The dove, since Noah's time an authority on peace, thought about the story for a while. Finally, she said to herself, "Perhaps there is only one person's voice lacking for peace to come to the world." - Source unknown

than the whole Bush cabal combined. Never mind Obama's oratory skill, it is refreshing to listen to a properly educated president (then again it is also a testament to how low the standards have been dropped that something that should be expected is now considered "special")

So the superficial stuff is great, no doubt about that.

Now, the substance.... that is a whole issue me thinks. He not only took ownership of Bush's f*ckup, but now he just put this albatross of a Nobel Peace firmly around his neck. Either Obama's conscience kicks in soon, or this is not going to end well. Sorry, but his body language during the speech said it all... I don't think he even believes half of the crap he says any more.

16. Tip on listening to languages you don't know.
Edited on Thu Dec-10-09 09:24 PM by JDPriestly
Listen to it as you would listen to music. Note the sounds that sound like words you know. Here, for instance, you can hear the word "Obama." As you listen to it over and over, you will recognize more words you know as well as many words that sound similar to words you know.

Our language is a mixture of German and French (which is a Romance or Latin-based language). Therefore, although the syntax and the words themselves of the language being spoken in the video sound unfamiliar at first. Gradually, you will hear more and more words you understand.

Then, you think about what the speaker might be saying and sometimes when you put a few words in context and use common sense, you can understand a fair amount. You will be fooled by what the French call faux amis -- false friends. Those are words that sound like English words, but don't have similar meanings to the English words they resemble.

Anyway, if you approach strange languages in this way, you can have fun learning them or at least understanding a little tiny bit of them. Of course, eventually, you have to learn the grammar and vocabulary. But, really, learning languages should be fun and not just drudgery, not just memorization of lists.
