A common mix of selfishness, avarice and religion guarantees that millions of people will never respect nature, or any branch of science devoted to its study. They call themselves "conservatives" but treat actual conservation as beneath them.

Dont bother them with evidence of the ozone hole, global warming, or anything that requires restraint on their part. They'll either ignore it or dumb it down and attack it on a pre-school level. Explaining fine points to these fools makes them fidget.

Science is actually not common sense on many levels. It's hard to cover the details while pumping gas. It takes specialized knowledge and serious book-learning. All of that requires patience and brainpower, not reactionary paranoia.

Those protesters are commies! Al Gore is the antichrist! Climategate vindicated our denial! Even 10 billion of God's children couldn't harm the Earth!

The main goal of a righteous, nature-snubbing conservative is to engage in phony piousness and get while the getting's good.

1. This is absolutely the truth.
My ultra right wing conservative father turned every light on in the house on that day when they had the earth hour thing and asked everyone to turn their power off for an hour. He thinks even recycling is giving into a liberal or communist belief.

7. Do you live in the south?
I do, and your father sounds like several people I know. They take great pride in their utter ignorance!

3. An article set to music?
Good points made in the "video," but would be better off as an article w/pix (and twangy redneck music). Not really a video.

5. It would seem that being lucky and successful will easily cloud your mind
Edited on Mon Dec-14-09 01:35 AM by Jemmons
Just like being a victim could make you doubt your own morals and motives, being a victor brings an irrational carelessness in regards to your ethics. Its a central part of the conservative thinking that your success is always based on your personal endeavors, never inheritance, luck or an environment full of potential. What an objective observer would see as greed driven crime, they themselves would see as clever restoration of justice. Their feeling of power and entitlement is the sole reliable source of justification. There is a lack of sincerity that escapes their own understanding and lets them inject all questioning of their behavior with a dose of righteousness that makes debate seen totally unnecessary and mostly quite repulsive. Opportunity is confused with legitimacy and satisfaction of desire with justice.

In the long run their selective blindness and lack of a social consciousness will spell disaster, first in their family lives and later in their arena of business. Meaningful reform usually dont start at the first big loss, but rather when a nadir is reached and a new foundation will have to be built.

6. With respect to the religious right, they ignore what the bible says
About the second coming of Jesus and who will be destroyed by him when he return.

Rev.11
<18> And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.

11. The conservative mixture is deadly
You have the religious nutcases who believe firstly that God gave them dominion over the Earth and so can treat it however they want, and secondly, the second coming of Christ is going to happen any day so why bother?

You have the, "As long as I get mine," segment that doesn't care what happens to the Earth as long as they get theirs, and their bottom line isn't affected.

And finally you have the, "Whatever they're for, we're against it," segment that even if Jesus did come back and say we should all recycle, they wouldn't because that would make liberals happy.

I had a conservative friend who was a combination of all 3, but once I saw a sack of crushed cans on his porch, and I asked him if he was recycling. He said he wasn't, just giving his cans to a friend who recycled who needed help financially. I told him he was recycling by proxy, and he was genuinely crestfallen.

All 3 of those groups then go out and subvert science using whatever method appeals to their group the most, and they convince the scientifically un-savvy that respecting nature, recycling, ozone holes, global climate change, etc. are all hoaxes.
