1. K&R & AJ English's Synopsis
As the climate summit in Copenhagen battles to overcome deep divisions on cutting global emissions, one place already being hit hard by the affects of climate change is Bhola island in southern Bangladesh.

The island is being swallowed by the sea as water levels continue to rise and experts say at the current rate it could disappear in 20 years.

Al Jazeera English's Step Vaessen reports on the plight of its climate change refugees.

11. Didn't most of this island sink in 1995?
Not to minimize these people's pain at all, nor to deny the impact of CO2 emmissions, but this is old news.

13. It involves wise choices for where to live and shop. And much walking and mass transit.
It helps that I have lived here 26 years and have seen all I want to of other parts of the city, lol.

14. remember when i was in LA when i was a kid
we wanted to cross the street to get into a shop, can't remember where it was. There was no pedestrian path anywhere, so we asked a cop on the sidewalk. He told us to get a taxi.

We had to use our rental car to cross the street.

15. Things have changed a lot:
http://www.metro.net/index.asp

We have a pretty decent Metro system - buses, subway, light rail. Even some bike lanes.

Not that there isn't plenty of room for improvement, but it's functional these days. I remember how utterly laughable the buses were when I came here in '83.

4. Does anyone else find it ironic that "Climate Change Refugees" are burning wood releasing CO2?

6. People who live on less than a dollar a day can't afford fuel
Edited on Thu Dec-17-09 11:53 PM by Turborama
It's a poverty problem. I'm sure they've prefer to be able to afford and use cheap electricity powered by renewable energy, if it was available.

What fuel do you use in your ivory tower?

8. Wish Network news and Cable news would report on this
It is sad that I have to go online, or watch CSPAN to see what is happening in Copenhagen and to hear the speakers. Thank God we get at least 1 hour coverage with Amy Goodman
