Maybe not totally political, but the message of unity in this song Is a message of peace and justice. Plus, when I was a teenager, the John Fahey Christmas albums were always played in my house and on the radio stations in my area(the Pacific Northwest).

Offered as a message of hope and reconciliation in a painful and bloodsoaked time.

Also, please don't take the posting of this as a gesture of Christian supremacism. I've always felt that this song offered a challenge to "Christendom", as much as anything else. The tune used in this version was created in the African-American church, among people fighting against oppression(and against the perversion of the Gospels by white clerics in the pay of their oppressors). It's also, to my mind, a call for the "Christian world" to live in unity with everyone ELSE, accepting the faiths or lack of faiths of all peoples of good will.
