6. They hate us for our freedoms.
Or something like that.

You know if they applied their motto "To protect and to serve" to the people, they might have more respect on the streets.

7. Incase the video doesn't explain.
This was an internet flash mob organized thing. Twitter based, I think? Plan was to show up at that intersection at a specified time and have a snowball fight.

Hundreds of people showed up. They 'mostly' threw from corner to corner when cars were stopped by traffic lights. But, get that many people together and a few just won't have any sense. They started hitting cars in motion. Tempers flared, as drivers got out to express their feelings.

First cop who showed up on scene was in an unmarked car, and it and he apparently got bombarded. As is typical when enough humans get together to form a mod, the collective is far stupider than the few individuals who are recognizing a growing problem. THings were well out of hand when marked police cars showed up and shut the whole scene down.

Moral of the story? If you want to organize something like this, set it in a nice park area. Plenty of those in DC.

10. Good thing I wasn't young participant in that snowball "fight."

I can have a short fuse.

I'm sure I would have nailed that cop with a hard snowball and than would have ran like hell!

I was in a lot of snowball "fight" when I was in high school. They were fun!

11. I live in D.C. and apparently there was a major *FRIENDLY* snowball fight...
Edited on Sun Dec-20-09 03:45 PM by Liberal_Stalwart71
The cop didn't realize that it was a friendly fight and pulled his gun. Others called the cops because he was in plain clothes. When the other D.C. cops arrived, they broke up the crowd. People were just having a good time. To be fair, that neighborhood used to be crime-ridden but has gentrified and turned around in the last few years. So whenever something goes down, cops automatically assume something nefarious. FASCISTS!!!!!

12. people become cops for a reason...
im sure some police come to their line of work with good intentions
of helping ppl and upholding the law etc... but i'll bet many become
cops because its an overt macho power tripping position. who knows
what this hummer guy's issues are - but it does seem way over the top
to have dealt with that situation with a gun and an attitude.

14. No Sale
You shouldn't throw snow balls at cars and never at people who carry guns even if they haven't repeatedly told you to stop. The a-hole in the black ski mask was a primary incendiary in this confrontation (the one who kept shouting "pig"). He should have been body slammed, cuffed, drug threw the snow and tossed into a squad car. I have no love for the cops, but I really hate stupid little shit hole provocateurs like that turd. It's a wonder nobody got tazered or shot. Idiots!

Instead of the guy yelling "Fuck you pig!"

Wonder why?

20. LOL! Couldn't disagree more. The cop is trained and screened and
a professional able to put emotions in check, evaluate a situation and determine when lethal force is necessary. Cops are trained that they must only pull out a weapon when they intend to discharge it into a suspect. Not doing so can mean their own death.

Not only that, the cop confronted a crowd before he assessed the situation. He is required by common sense and professional obligation to observe and then act, not the other way around. Plus, since he didn't have a partner he risked provoking the situation by acting alone and engaging a large crowd with gun in hand.

The parents of the child yelling at the cop obviously did a poor job teaching restraint, or perhaps the kid is just stupid, or perhaps he is just being a kid. That is no excuse for unnecessary force and abusing the kid over a snowball fight no matter what he was yelling. Not all free speech has been delegated to a free speech zone in an abandoned warehouse district, although we will soon be at that stage. It is unlikely that the kid would have the financial resources to achieve justice in any event.

Justice or not, if the cop injured the kid over name calling, and if it were caught on video, the cop could have his career ruined.

As it is, it is likely that the cop will undergo some sort of internal (and most likely meaningless) disciplinary process for wielding his weapon that way and the results may or may not be made public.

Absolutely nothing here warrants a taser or body slam or baton to the head or any other violence.

I'm sure the pilgrim kids threw snowballs at the horse and buggy's on the way to church, risking a horse to bolt and causing horse and buggy traffic mayhem. And the strict church reverend would demand they be placed in the stocks.

I doubt we are a better nation for it.

27. It appears to me that the Cop lost his temper
Edited on Mon Dec-21-09 06:12 AM by USAcitizen
Cops are trained not to lose their temper. This one must have failed that training. He could have dispersed the crowd in a more civil manner.

29. I couldn't agree more
with these sentiments. The cop had obviously lost it, he shouldn't have, but he did, and he had upholstered his gun. My point is how stupid it is to goad an armed man in his mental state, any armed man. I doubt if any of the "pig" and "don't bring a gun to a snowball fight" screamers and chanters have ever seen what bullets do to flesh up close and personal. They were damn lucky they didn't end up bringing snowballs to a gun fight.

Main difference could be whether or not they were interfering with traffic.
