From today:

The irrelevant one says that if George Bush were president and wanted this bill, it would have been on his desk by August ready to sign.

Doesn't think Democrats are attuned enough to what is going on in the rest of country, focusing on DC.

Bill simply expands the existing system, which is a problem.

Says it would be a mistake for him to urge anyone to vote for it right now, as we don't know what is in the bill.

Doesn't think bill will pass with Stupak amendment.

They discuss the "gifts" to senators in a few states. That perhaps more will be demanding it.

Dean says what is good for Nebraska is good for the rest of the country.

Intelligent discourse, no rudeness from Schieffer. A relief.

1. K & R
The more I see of Dean, the more I see why the MSM and corporate Dems have fought so hard to marginalize him over the years. The sad thing is the otherwise intelligent people who buy into the efforts to dismiss him.

5. Bush Would've Loved This
Agreed. And Dean is right about Bush. As evil as his Administration was, it's a simple fact that Bush would've gotten this thing passed whenever he wanted.

Of course, in its current form - 30 million more paying customers for the insurance industry, and criminalization of anybody too poor to pay the "market rate" - Bush would have loved it. Good job, Dems.

7. Right. Not providing health care....requiring them to buy it.
Good for those who qualify for subsidies. Not so good for the others.

3. Dean is honest, intelligent, realistic and a wonderful human being.
He, Kucinich, Bernie Sanders and Al Franken are about the only ones out there who I am absolutely certain fit that description. I would like to see Dean/Kucinich run for president/vp in 2012.

10. Dean also said -
The bill has gotten better.

Cost controls have been put back in.

The Medicaid reimbursement has been fixed in rural areas.

If we're going to use the current system, we need to give this bill a chance and let it go to conference.

Dean said he likes the expansion of community medical centers.

Dean feels that the Nebraska compromise may expand and ultimately be "good for the country."

As I've said, I think Dean will support the legislation in the end (with calls for continued improvement.) I feel people here should prepare for that.

11. Yes, he will support it in the end. Yes, of course you are right.
He knows the party is about to split in two parts over this, and he will back off rather than hurt it.

12. He would never split the party, he just wants a good bill.
Which we are not going to get.

But he tried.

13. Here's the deal
if we keep pushing the 'Dean said the bill stinks' mantra what will happen when he does ultimately support the bill? Will he be called a sell out? Or, will people understand that he's an advocate for change who pushed and possibly helped make this a better bill?

I worry that he'll be scorned when he does come around, because we're promoting a one sided view of his complex position.

14. That is not what I am saying or doing. It is your imagination.
He is scorned anyway, why do you think I posted the video that I posted?

15. I think his being
pragmatic makes him less likely to be the object of scorn. I feel as if some are painting a one sided (negative) version of his view point which will open him up to unfair critique.

Note the word "caved" in the thread above? IIRC, you said it yourself, yesterday. In other words, if Dean doesn't piss and moan with me for all eternity about this bill, he sucks, he caved, he's a craven coward, right?

18. I wish we'd refer to LBJ being tough than *. GW* had a whole media structure supporting every dumb..
Edited on Wed Dec-23-09 12:09 AM by ProgressOnTheMove
decision really. GW* was not tough he was enabled, to me it's a world of difference. I don't feel it's wise politics to give the most destructive President in history any kind of credit. Although I agree with Dean on a majority of things otherwise.
