"Ian Punnett spoke with economist John Perkins, who pointed toward predatory capitalism as the real cause of the current global financial meltdown. He outlined his former work as an "economic hit man" in which he helped convince third-world governments to accept huge loans for infrastructure projects that they ultimately wouldn't be able to afford. When they couldn't pay back the loans, the US govt./corporations would instead demand cheap oil/resources or political/military favors, he said.

This kind of stratagem has gone global with corporations, rather than governments, controlling human and natural resources around the world, he continued. Morality aside, the exploitative nature of predatory capitalism has left the world in a mess, and the planet is spiraling toward disaster, Perkins argued.

To change the situation, he suggested people work toward building a different economy-- creating their own companies that make things the world actually needs like sustainable energy, and anti-pollution products. Also, consumers can also exert influence over corporations by complaining or not buying their goods or services if they don't approve of their practices, such as making clothes in sweatshops. Further, he believes poverty is one of the root causes of terrorism, and by combating it we could help reduce the problem."

(It's a long show: the actual interview with Perkins begins with Part 3, a little over 2 minutes in.)

I remember when he returned (GAH 10 years now?!) and I understand.

but i miss him.

anyone know what he's up to?

I loved listening to him when I was working in a gas station years ago during the 90's.

I miss the 90's. it was such a safe time, it really was.

2. The 90's may have been safer
but that was the decade that "they" were setting things in motion for America's downfall. They used bills like NAFTA, to set up our fall. We still retain the the right to either, renegotiate or pull-out of these disastrous, capitalistic "agreements", yet our officials don't. We must remove money from the electoral process or our officials will never be responsible to "we the people", they will remain indebted (and therefore compelled to represent) the corporations instead of us. All elections should be publicly financed. It would really save us a lot of money in the long run and force politicians to be much more responsive to citizens not corporations. We've said it all before, but until that happens, the corporate hit-men will stay very gainfully employed, at our peril.

5. I miss Art, too.
The last I heard, he got remarried (his wife's name pronounced Erin, but is spelled differently) and now has a daughter. He was living somewhere in Asia, (where his wife is from) but I believe he came back to the states when his daughter was about to be born. I'm not sure if he's still here in the states or back in Asia.

8. What a bunch of fascists!
I could only stomach up to Part 10 because of the fascist callers. One of these days, karma will be visiting them, and it won't be pretty.
