A man has shot dead his former girlfriend and killed four employees at a shopping centre in the Finnish city of Espoo, before apparently turning his gun on himself.

The ex-girlfriend of Ibrahim Shkupolli, 43, had taken out a restraining order against him.

3. People shouldn't be allowed to own BULLETS.

The problem is that any person can apply for a permit and have one. I say if people want to own a gun, fine. But if you want bullets, you'll have to go and by them at a rifle range one at a time and shoot them there.


Unless you're a licenced hunter with a HUNTING WEAPON, not a stupid 9mm pistol or an M16 assault rifle, you should not be able to get ammunition for it unless you're someplace where you're actually supposed to shoot it.


Also,

this thing in Finland shows more than anything the damaging effect of overblown media attention. This has created a copycat effect.

Very few places in the U.S. require permits of any sort for firearms ownership. Most states have no means of, or requirement for, registration.

Bullets are but one component of a modern rifle or handgun round. There are four basic components to a round of ammunition.

It is painfully clear that you know very little about firearms. You only know that you don't like them. That's enough to make you grossly unqualified to pass judgment on those of us who use firearms for sporting and self defense.

Why do you refer to inanimate object as stupid? The only stupid thing I see here is your gross and willful ignorance about firearms and their proper uses.

I am aware that the bullet is not the entire round, and that there are things such as the casing, primer etc. I was merely using the word "bullet" because this is what is often used to describe a round of ammunition, and I think most people who read it would probably understand what i meant.

And yes I generally don't like firearms, and there is no reason whatsoever for people to own one (except proper hunting weapons). The self defense argument is utter bullshit, as people are much more likely to get killed by someone they know or injure/kill themselves in an accident. If I lived in a neighborhood where I felt I had to arm myself to stay safe, I would rather just relocate.

Use proper terminology to avoid confusion. What may be common parlance in your circle in the above quote is incorrect. Would you want a physician using anything less than correct terminology during a surgery? You may not like the analogy, but it is appropriate.

Really? I lived in what was considered to be a very safe and almost crime free neighborhood in the '70's. That didn't stop a druggie from breaking into my house with a gun while my wife, infant son, and I were sleeping. I got my handgun from the nightstand, got my wife and son under the bed, shouted to him to leave, then shot back after he fired in my direction. He's dead. We three were safe. One must assume that an armed criminal is prepared to do him harm.

Next bullshit claim about self-defense being bullshit, please. Or would you prefer that innocent lives had been lost to support your argument?

If you can make the time, check the location and focus of the board. While the rest of the world is discussed here, it is by default and consensus U.S. centered. That aside, thanks for the OP pointing out that such tragedies happen in places with very strict gun control. It is further proof that criminals ignore such laws. Please avoid the, "If he hadn't had access to a gun..." argument. There are plenty of axes, clubs, knives, poisons, etc. available anywhere in the world.

Chopsticks were an attempt at weapon control. That worked out well, didn't it? If people are determined to kill or intimidate, they will find a tool for the job.
