I live in Atlanta, and the local bank closings are in the paper daily. Otherwise, I love the idea! If the last year or two taught anybody anything, it's that Wall Street is not the place to look to for turning this POS economy around!

5. I have a good VISA credit card through my credit union

I belong to two credit unions, one local and one in a previous community. One has a credit card available, and they treat me well. From both, at various times, I have received car loans at very good rates. Ask around to make sure it is solid, but absolutely consider a credit union. I also have an account in a local bank in a previous community. They treat me right also.
