an abominable Guard piece for the past several weeks. The soundtrack is a bastardization of 'Carmina Burana' - I guess they think it is supposed to sound heroic, but it sound downright demonic to me, with screeching vocals, atonal chords and discordant transitions. Supposed to subliminally (how something so obvious can be subliminal is beyond me) bring heroic fantasy to mind - they forget that Conan the Barbarian was a fucking BARBARIAN.
I snapped, the other day, and took the remote and turned the sound down to nearly inaudible - can't turn it off, for contractual reasons - because hearing it eight times an hour for four and half hours was about to make to tear the fucking monitors off the wall.
ON EDIT: Though not having seen this clip, I'm betting it's the same thing.

I love a good piece of fiction. Imagine, national guard troops actually at home, helping people following a natural disaster, and not all mostly dying in Iraq and Afghanistan.
I guess they're shooting for masses of impressionable youth standing up in the theater and shouting "Jawohl, mein fuhrer! For the fatherland!" before sitting back down and watching their Disney movie. Hey gotta get 'em young.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I just don't have the grapes to pull that off...well, I have the grapes but they're no where near big enough to pull off something that ballsy.

17. I saw this played in front of Avatar a couple of weekends ago |
|
The response of the intended audience was not admiration and a geniune desire to go be an American hero in the National Guard.
Embarrassed chuckling was more like it. Is Al Qaeda writing this crap for the Guard?

20. The scary music will turn off the young people they want to recruit |
|
The music might appeal to grey-haired armchair generals, but not your average 17 year-old thinking about how to spend the next 10 years of his or her life.
You would think they would focus more on the camaraderie with your fellow soldiers. Not getting yelled at by some guy in a hat while the rain pours down from the night sky.
The whole thing reminded me of the movie "Starship Troopers", which is so over the top in its portrayal of militarism that most people see it as a warning not a blueprint.

My girlfriend and I are having this contest to see who can find the absolute worst movie ever made. We were about 15 min into that piece of shit, with it's all-star cast of shit actors when she turned to me and asked, "Is this supposed to be a comedy, and when will Leslie Nielsen make an appearance"? Needless to say, Starshit Poopers ranks pretty high on the list of movies that should never have seen the light of day. And yeah, I did get an ominous sense of our country going down the toilet through the glorification of militarism portrayed in the film. The commercials for the US military are getting just that bad.

22. Oh, Starship Troopers isn't so bad - |
|
if you compare it to its own sequels.
And I did like the rather subversive 'news as propaganda - propaganda as news' clips throughout.
