Does she have a secret identity like Superman? If so, it doesn't work. I can still tell that it's her.

A lot of straight people (like me and Mr. H) think she looks adorable regardless of what she wears or doesn't -- her wit, intelligence, erudition, and sparkle delight us.

She wears contact lenses on her news show, and in fact has been talked into a number of concessions about her appearance because television is such a visual medium. Television professionals, regardless of gender, wear makeup and suits. She wears pantsuits in neutral colors because then no one will bother to talk about her clothes instead of what she says. In an interview last year she said her girlfriend had some input on makeup, but I have a hunch her friend Keith Olbermann might have given her some tips as well. Ordinarily Rachel wears no makeup, either, but on tv you have to or you look dead.

As to your question: She wears glasses because that's what she likes to wear when not on the Rachel Maddow Show. She looks very boyish (hair, clothes, shoes) because that is the "look" she lives in.
