United Nations, New York, 17 January 2010: International rescue workers found United Nations (UN) staff member Jens Kristensen from Denmark alive today after being buried in the rubble at the missions headquarters at Christopher Hotel in Haiti.

Kristensen, who works for the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), was found shortly after UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited the site. Four other people were rescued earlier in the day.

Kristensen told a rescue worker that he believes that two more people are stuck close to where he was found. He added that he heard them banging about 36 to 48 hours ago.

Five days after the earthquake hit Haiti, rescue workers are still finding people trapped under the rubble. The UN Disaster Assistance and Coordination teams Onsite Operations Coordination Center (OSOCC) reported that favorable climate conditions and certain structural qualities have enhanced the survival chances of individuals trapped in collapsed buildings.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that there are 27 Urban Search and Rescue teams are deployed across priority locations with approximately 1,500 rescue workers and 115 dogs. They have made 58 live rescues so far.

Here comes a generalization based on my work as a nurse. It is only a generalization and the fact that so many of the people in Haiti are poverty stricken and therefore may not follow this generalization is certainly true, but black people have stronger constitutions. The order actually goes black male, black female, white female and coming in dead last are the white males (or wimpy white guys as they are usually referred to). I'm crossing my fingers and toes that there are more people to be found alive, as crazy as that sounds.
