Focus on the Family: "Haiti... you can literally feel the evil in it." |
|
Edited on Tue Jan-19-10 12:10 AM by The Night Owl
Following in the footsteps of Pat Robertson, a guest on the
Focus on the Family program claimed that Satan has had
absolutely free reign in Haiti and that the evil there can be
literally felt. He went on to say that the healing and change
that he expects the church to bring to Haiti could only have
come about as a result of the earthquake.

not feel any "evil" around us. we saw poverty and people living in shacks. despite the poverty and horrible government (papa doc had just died) and his son had taken over the people were all polite and friendly.

12. Heh, that's because you're a liberal. |
|
To Focus on the Family that makes you even more evil than a bunch of black people living in poverty.
Focus on the Family is easy to understand:
Lesbians = Evil Gays = Evil Bisexuals = Evil Transgendered = Evil Non-Christians = Evil Liberals = Evil Moderates = Evil Black People = Evil Jewish People = Evil* Christians who don't agree with them = Evil*
* Such individuals who can be converted to their brand of Christianity can be taken off the list.

When I listened to this person, my first thought was "I hear a lot more evil coming from you, buddy!" Why is it that so many of these folks, self-professed Christians with knowledge of the Bible and its teachings, are so often cruel and venomous? Not to mention ignorant. The Haitian people, digging through the rubble hoping to rescue yet another person, the foreign helpers who treat the wounded and try to bring relief - they are doing more of God's work than this blithering idiot could ever hope to bring.

What does being Christians have to do with it? There are good, generous, tolerant, loving and saintly people out there. There are also shallow, ignorant, superstitious, selfish and violent people too. One's religion is beside the point.
Still, it's nice for Robertson and Focus on the Family and Rush to let us know where they're coming from. We've taken note.

6. Again with the devil . . . |
|
Sheesh. It's so damn narcissistic to filter every single event in the world through one's own personalized view. Sometimes shit just happens. If religion gets people to actually contribute to the relief effort, I'm all for it, but I wish they'd set the preaching aside for a second. I'm sure if an earthquake hit this guy's community, it wouldn't be because of the devil but part of 'God's plan.'

But closer to the truth than I wish to think about. There's more than a little racism there.
I despise these people and all that they stand for. Like the company printing bilbical verses in code on rifle sights...the business of religion slopping over into the governing sphere is outrageous.

15. I have a P/T job and work for a fundementalist... |
|
She has a religious answer for everything. Yesterday, it was, "I guess we can thank the Lord that He gave us warm weather after that terrible snowstorm". I stepped back, wondering why God would get involved with sending a storm that created accidents and enough work that some people had heart attacks trying to dig out to get to the store. Whenever something "uncomfortable" comes up, like a decision to help someone, it's a "test from God". One day, there was a situation where a resident was hy $5 on their rent, (I work at the local Housing Development), and she went into a short tirade about "responsibility". I figured, I'd just give the guy $5 on the sly and that was the end of it, (I did after he left the office, and he was off the hook). About the incident though, she said it was a "test from God", to which I answered..."well, you failed the test." She sat down, looked at me, and started to go into the "personal responsibility" spiel...but cut herself short, realizing that indeed, if this was a "test from God", she certainly did fail.
I think some of the people who spout off crap like this don't think...they simply just don't think. And that is the true disaster in situations like this.

18. Thanks for sharing that. |

And it makes an important point. First that people tend to go along with the flow and never think for themselves. And second that yes, it might just be a test for Christians....do they, or do they not, follow the teachings of Jesus?
And this all started with Pat Robertson's comments and his reason for doing that is financial, in that he needs always to justify HIS teachings that God pours out his wealth to those good people and punishes those evil ones with poverty.
Pat is the harlot riding on the back of the beast.

people like that have taken a religion that posited forgiveness, empathy, love and compassion and replaced it with something that is fueled by ahte, paranoia and destruction for all those who don't think like they do.
Unfortunately, their "thinking" is taken as fact by some.
No mainstream religion advocates violence in it's tenets. It is people who have interpreted those works into something vile, (regardless of the religion), that are to be held to account in any way we can. I wish no ill will on anyone, that is a baseline for any religion, (or lack thereof), that people should look at before spouting off.
Robertson is not only an embarrassment for Christians, he's an embarrassment to humanity as a whole.

If they'd just take their damn meds, they wouldn't be imagining evil everywhere except where it really is...their mirrors and their twisted minds.

19. It is a continual struggle against ignorance and superstition. |
|
Our Forefathers were men and women of the Enlightenment and made a dramatic break with the status quo of the domination of mankind by the Church and Crown. When I look at the history of our nation I see it as constant struggle to imbue the concepts held by the founders into the citizens many of who remain hopeless locked in the grip of ignorance.
Unfortunately, millions of our fellow citizens are willing pawns of politicians and fanatical preachers that prey on their ignorance and prejudices in their quest for power. The struggle will go on without cessation or until we surrender to the tyranny that conquered other nations during similar times. During times of discontent and frustration, such as we are experiencing now, is the time in which the least informed of our citizens are most vulnerable to fascistic propaganda whether spewed from the pulpit or by political charlatans. The Tea Baggers have much in common with the Nazi Brown Shirt thugs who were noted for their extreme right wing philosophy, racism and violence. This new breed of fascists are not interested in civil discourse of the issues. They are little more than ignoramus hooligans and thugs who idolize brainless twits like Sara Palin. God help us.

20. People who believe this way are very unhappy in their own lives... |
|
and have an overwhelming desire to make everyone else unhappy and miserable---why else would they all be looking forward to the end of the world!
They are filled with hate, and hate eats the soul from the inside out. I'd feel sorry for them if I didn't feel such revulsion.

...on Haiti with the phrase "between you and me" even though he's giving an interview which he knows will be broadcast over Christian radio stations across the US? It's almost as though he acknowledges that he shouldn't say what he's thinking but then says it anyway.
