Jan. 29 (Bloomberg) -- The idea of secret banking cabals that control the country and global economy are a given among conspiracy theorists who stockpile ammo, bottled water and peanut butter. After this week’s congressional hearing into the bailout of American International Group Inc., you have to wonder if those folks are crazy after all.

Wednesday’s hearing described a secretive group deploying billions of dollars to favored banks, operating with little oversight by the public or elected officials.

Like Cenk says, it is because we did believe that things were going to change that makes the disappointment so profound. And even if those expectations and hopes were naive and mistaken, they were real to us.

Now where do we turn and what do we do?

1) keep fighting the ineffective war we are in, vote for the same sell-outs that perpetuate the policies, if not the rhetoric, of the Bushistas.

2) let the current crop of Vichy Dems go down with the hope that real Democrats will take their place.

3) drop out completely and hunker down, try to survive the enhanced destruction that will happen when the pukes officially get back in power.

We each must decide for ourselves.

10. That's what it comes down to, doesn't it?

You nailed down our three choices. Those are precisely the options that we have.

I am firmly convinced that the only thing that will improve the situation is a revolution. I don't
think that will happen until most Americans are affected by what has happened to our government. Until
most people are desperate, they will not get it. There are too many happy fat-cats--watching their
big screens and driving their SUVs. They just don't get that our democracy has been stolen, and that
we will all one day suffer for it.

But now, too many are relaxed.

My strategy is to prepare to hang on as much as possible--as things go South. Some families will lose
jobs, incomes, and homes early in the process. Others will go later. My strategy is to save, save, save
and try to hang on to income for as long as possible--and to stockpile essentials. At least that will give
us months and maybe years to wait until this nation wakes up and the real work can begin.

I don't know if that's right or wrong--brilliant or moronic, but it's my general strategy.

4. Nothing will change without changing us. We are the System, and we keep doing the same

thing, and we keep losing ground. Strikes worked for the French People. We aren't heard, because we are subdivided into background noise. We need a consensus on a few basic human expectations from government.

6. Evidence of your statement is when we elected Barack Obama, who

himself is a corporatist. I fully believe Obama won the election because the corporatist believed he, Obama, would be a willing partner and the most easy to manipulate. This was no accident that McCain-Feingold got overturned during the Obama presidency. Yes, we need a few basic expectation from government, and if these are not followed, we riot. Also, when we elect a President and he breaks his second or third campaign promise we must begin a rapid effort to have the President ushered from office, even if we have to pass some kind of bill to do that. In the case of Obama, the buzz words Hope and Change got in the way of critical thinking. Who could we have elected if not Obama? I honestly have no idea. Also, with respect to the President's speech the other night, am I the only one who noticed how glibly Obama delivered it? The byplay with the Republicans; the smiles; the banter. One would think we are in boom times. Now, I campaigned for, sent money to and voted for Barack Obama. My bad. I don't think I'll be alive for the next Presidential election. But if I am, I will listen to no flowery speeches, no litany of promises... I will study the man thoroughly: what has he accomplished? Does he often make promises he doesn't fulfill? Where does he get his money? Oh, well, sorry for the rant. I fully expect Obama to end up making George W Bush look like Winston Churchill in comparison. We may well enter Japan mode for the next ten or so years.

I,too,voted for, and contributed to Obama, in the desperate hope that getting Dems into power would turn the country back from the nightmare of the Bush Admin. When he won, I cried tears of joy and relief.

A year later, I'm crying again, but this time it's tears of bitter disappointment and the realization that both parties have been bought and paid for, that I really have no voice, and that we are no longer a democracy.

So, what to do? I have chosen to donate directly to,and vote for, those progressive candidates who best represent my ideals and beliefs, be they Democrats or 3rd party. No more donations to any faction of party hierarchy.

What else? I'm in the process of moving to a more sustainable living lifestyle.That includes moving back to my hometown to be nearer family, sharing a home with one of my nieces in order to pool resources and talents, growing a garden that includes fruits and veggies, building up a year's supply of nonperishable food items and other essentials, saving as much as possible, and joining a CSA. I'm also going to prepare to be able to live off the grid if necessary. I also buy second hand whenever possible. I've been fixing/remodeling with materials I bought from Habitat for Humanity and furniture from Craig's list and Goodwill.

If anyone else is interested, just Google "Sustainable Living". There are some great web sites that will help you get started. Also, go to Carolyn Baker's web site. She has links to sustainable living sites there, as well.

and even TSed for doing so, that things are going to get worse before they get better.

We're maturing to the point where we understand that things MUST get worse before they get better.

Neither party is the solution. I believe that the parties are like malignant tumors, each promising ultimate destruction of our democracy. The Democratic Party merely being the tumor promising to kill us more slowly, and, therefore, it's the pragmatist's party of "lesser-of-two-evils" preference. I think that the Democratic Party might be the bigger of the two problems, because it offers the false hope that keeps Americans from revolting against a corrupt system.

This thread has the potential to be deleted for violating DU rules. But it hardly matters. This stuff is being written on blogs all over the Internet. Whether on the Internet, or on Progressive Radio, or in conversations like the one I had at a coffee shop near the University of Alaska Fairbanks yesterday, a fatally-corrupted political system and the need to do "what is necessary" to reclaim democracy is on more and more people's lips.
