CNN - 29 January 2010: Obama takes questions at the House Republican retreat.

OBAMA: 'But if you were to listen to the debate, and frankly how some of you went after this bill, you'd think that this thing was some Bolshevik plot. No, I mean, that's how you guys presented it. And, so I'm thinking to myself, how is it that a plan that is pretty centrist, no, look... I know you guys disagree, but if you look at the facts of this bill, most independent observers, this is actually similar to what many Republicans proposed to Bill Clinton when he was doing his debate on health care."

94. What I saw was the determination of the Republicans to destroy Obama.
They are so damn hateful that they are willing to allow the nation to go down the drain rather than cooperate to improve the plight of citizens. Today's Republican politicans are the scum of the earth. The Rovian neo-cons are a cancer that has hijacked the Republican party and has transformed it into a mindless cult dominated by racists, corporate bootlickers and End Time evangelical fundamentalist nitwits.

I would like to use that quote elsewhere in the future; it is a spot-on description of the Republican party and their followers’ mentality. Their every waking moment is filled with irrational and obsessive hatred.

and didn't even mention, 'Socialism'. He took their stupid assertations about his trying to implement a 'Socialist Agenda', reframed it with a better and even scarier sounding assertation ('Bolshevik Plot'!) and threw it back in their faces. He totally owned those bitches.

8. Obama inspired confidence in his ability to deal with the weighty
problems he faces.

In a civil but firm tone when necessary, he stood his ground.
The Republicans also spoke in civil manner as some of them
presented the less than truthful talking points. Obama
very skillfully pushed back remaining Presidential but not
taking any stuff from the GOP. No hesitancy in pointing
out the untruths and setting the stories straight.

Most anyone watching had to be impressed to see this side
of Obama. It took guts to open up the discussion to questions
and answers under TV Lights.

the best they've got are two low-rent cretins--Brown and mooselini and she doesn't have a thought longer than 140 characters.

If they didn't have talking points put on mp3's and downloaded onto their blackberry's, they wouldn't have a damb thing to say.

9. Well that's telling it like it is. Something you don't see in DC every day.
The GOP just haven't had to face reality until this moment. No one has challenged them on their lies and childish behavior.

I will gladly change my opinion of Obama. I said he lacked fire. Now I'm beginning to think he was suppressing his strength until he had enough evidence with which to formulate his stronger actions.

And I think I got my "stop singing and start swinging" Obama after all.

26. This was so courageous!
In my lifetime I have NEVER seen anything so amazing and courageous as this President walking into the lion's den.. Wow!

I say "courageous" because we all know that NO Republicans play to anything but a packed house. Case in point the so-called "rebuttal" to the SOTUS on Tuesday.

Think of the Bush years with all those "rallies" and faux town hall meetings, closed to anyone who even wore a t-shirt that seemed remotely against what those clowns were hawking. We all know people who actually got arrested for exercising their right of free speech.

We need soooo much more of this President Obama!

Bravo, Mr. President. Well done, sir. Oh, and THANK YOU!”

27. He's right that the bill was far more apppealing to Republicans
and still is, than to Democrats. It's Romneycare after all. The only reason they opposed it publicly was because he has a 'D' after his name.

Does he get it yet? That no matter how much he tries to please them, unless he switches to an 'R', he cannot as they are a cult.

Which is why most of his base could not understand why he ignored them. Republicans will never support him.

What I hear him saying is 'I tried to please you, I ignored the people who voted for me to do so, and you still weren't happy. Why?'

Now, he should do what they really oppose, fight for a Public Option and fight for the people who elected him.

He's smart so I don't understand why he catered to them all along. He sounds sad to me, that after all he did for them, they still don't like him.

I'm not sure that's what you were thinking as appeasement.

I see where President Obama is attempting to go: the high ground.
Maybe it will just show everyone how absolutely rotten the Republicans are? Don't know.

I understand what you mean however, but these are different days than FDR and LBJ. We've got 24/7 news and sound bites. But also...The times were far from enlightened. FDR does not get elected then if there's t.v. (who'd vote for a guy in a wheelchair?) and boy howdy, LBJ would have been impeached today for all that backroom dirt and money flung far and wide. Do we really want to go back to that world?

I'm just sayin'

71. Indeed. He basically admits that HCR is a republican bill, which actually
only makes the repugs believe that they can push anything ELSE even further to the Right. I'd respect Obama far more if he presented us with the kind of bill and acts that we voted him into office for. I'm starting to wonder if he'll ever learn the lesson; writing GOP legislation won't guarantee any GOP votes. They hate him because he's a Dem and because his skin is dark. Nothing will ever change that, so he may as well force them to filibuster legislation that the voters asked for.

44. We finally have a President who cares and isn't just running for re-election
He is clearly pissed and apparently feels that speaking the truth means something - imagine that?

I was none too happy for the first half hour of the SOTU, but now I think I'll take my perfect credit to my credit union and refinance the mortgages on both my properties. I don't care if it costs me $ to do so. Both my mortgages were sold to Citibank last year and I want NOTHING to do with them. I'll happily pay my monthly interest to a local CU.

Awesome smackdown though! I've never seen a politician confront these punks like this. I was very encouraged about our president today. I am still pissed he chose the 3rd way to resolve the health care debate. He had a mandate and refused to use it. I guess there is still some time for change.

47. He is exactly right..
In fact the Bill is right leaning.... That is why I personally don't care for it, I mean I like to get it done and it does address some of the issues but there is no Single Payer universal care that would solve many concerns of the people... Yet Obama got hammered for this bill which is far from a a purely progressive bill or even a very liberal bill that would have created a govt run universal health system.

The Cons used this to scare the people into thinking that if this became law then the inevitable govt take over of health insurance was going to happen.... Politics.... Pure Politics

I watched him today it was Daniel in the Lions den and he delivered.... May the enemies of Democracy fall victim to their own hateful rhetoric....

this past summer during the town hall meetings. He needs the rest of the Dems
to expose the dishonest representations of the health care and other issues. See what one
person can do, what can another 345 elected Dems do, with a little spine.

62. I wish he would spend so much time and energy shoring up the left base than the right base...
now let the attacks against my comment begin! We can start with I missed the boat, or I need to be realistic, or centered etc.

I'm just not that impressed by talk. This health care bill was pretty fucked up, especially the senate bill.

I just don't see the need for a single party system and a great reconciliation. I see more of a need for riots in the streets against our head first plunge into fascism.

Like martial arts - you have to use your opponents weight against them, this is an interesting start in that from Obama - it will backfire, however - just watch. Republicans will never ever ever ever ever ever ever compromise. The "democrats" are obliged to meet the right wing.

I'm not stupid, just a liberal who sees nothing in the democratic party for liberals - and I get extremely angry when he talks about the "same problems on the left" that is an absolutely false and frankly stupid equivalency. There is nothing like the right wing noise machine from liberals.

Its always "those on the left" and "those on the right". "Those on the left" need to find a party even if it is a small political party where we feel welcome and can grow as a grass roots pressure against the "centrist" right wingers of both parties.

I am a liberal - so I would like to support a party "on the left". Which means for liberals like me (just a small minority of Americans whose money and labor helped keep the democratic party going for last 30 years or so). I am not ashamed of liberals, why should I be? I am ashamed of democrats and their conduct over last several decades.

The republicans have everything to gain by this theater - by focusing so much attention on the right wing, he is just giving them more and more credibility (remember Obama's first act as president was to have a big pow-wow with right wing pundits?)

Now if only he sat down and worked with and supported those of us on the left.... can you imagine? Wow a president who like liberals - one day maybe - one day.

(sigh... I am just so burned out by democratic pussy footing around, I can barely muster a required and righteous rage against the absurdity of it all)

"I hear there's rumors on the Internets that we're going to have a draft." "I'm the commander -- see, I don't need to explain -- I do not need to explain why I say things. That's the interesting thing about being president." "You know, one of the hardest parts of my job is to connect Iraq to the war on terror." "This foreign policy stuff is a little frustrating." "I know how hard it is for you to put food on your family." "Is our children learning" "Bring it on" "I promise you I will listen to what has been said here, even though I wasn't here." "We spent a lot of time talking about Africa, as we should. Africa is a nation that suffers from incredible disease." "I am here to make an announcement that this Thursday, ticket counters and airplanes will fly out of Ronald Reagan Airport." "Tribal sovereignty means that; it's sovereign. I mean, you're a -- you've been given sovereignty, and you're viewed as a sovereign entity. And therefore the relationship between the federal government and tribes is one between sovereign entities." "I couldn't imagine somebody like Osama bin Laden understanding the joy of Hanukkah." "The same folks that are bombing innocent people in Iraq were the ones who attacked us in America on September the 11th." "Oh, no, we're not going to have any casualties." "I think I was unprepared for war." "I will not withdraw, even if Laura and Barney are the only ones supporting me." "Do you have blacks, too?" "I would say the best moment of all was when I caught a 7.5 pound largemouth bass in my lake." "I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully." "I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees."

Those were the daze!

For years, we had to sit back and watch as media from all stripes allowed the old and grizzled constituents of these Repug whips, congressmen and Senators associate anything Democratic with all things "Old Soviet". President Obama is now calling this talking point for what it is: dated, reactionary and downright idiotic.

Conservatives . . . It's Two thousand TEN. NO ONE UNDER 45 CARES ABOUT or HAS ANY EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT TO 'TEH EVIL EMPIRE' ANYMORE. You make yourselves sound like mountansized idiots instead of merely garden variety ones. Please stop. For ALL of us, pal.

I only saw part of this, but it was enough for me. This will be diced up, respliced and jammed down his throat. I am not a media person, but even I can figure out this one.

"I will telivise the HC debate" candidate Obama
headlines - Obama refuses C-Span request
"I did televise the majority of the debate" President Obama

Had he kept his promises, this would have been a great move. It just created a wealth of opportunity for republicans.

He has an ego, he loves to let people see him "scolding" rebubs and as someone said above, looking down at them. The general population will not watch this in its entirety, but 60 seconds at a time. If you think the "inspiring" Obama will trump the "waffling" Obama, you're kidding yourselves.

Based on the tone of this thread, I better duck now.

115. If that was a "reprimand" it was extremely soft. "Centrist"? No, the current
HCR bill is entirely Right Wing since it serves the corporations and not the people. "People on our side do it too." hardly. Don't try to pull that "we're just as guilty" nonsense. Watching this reminded me of why the Dems aren't getting anywhere; Obama is very polite and knowledgeable, yes, but he never takes a strong stand on anything. If you don't take a stand and lead, the army just sits and waits for someone else who will. It's very discouraging.
