1. A Personal Perspective
Edited on Tue Mar-02-10 02:12 AM by Son Of Wendigo
In June 2008 I became ill from a bacteria called MRSA. This is a variety of Staph that is resistant to nearly all antibiotics. I put off going to my doctor or the hospital until it was nearly too late. One morning I could not stand up and my consciousness was at best spotty. I had a fever of 105. My wife called the paramedics and I was taken to the hospital, where I was to remain for sixteen weeks. I have almost no memory of the first couple of weeks I was there, as the doctors tried to break the infection with various combinations of antibiotics. The bacteria did a great deal of damage to me. I had a heart attack. I had to have a destroyed heart valve replaced, and later on, a pacemaker installed. I incurred damage to my lungs, liver, kidneys, and bone marrow. I have been told that I nearly died three times during the hospitalization. To this day I still cannot walk without a walker, and then only for short distances. I am 56 years old.

My wife and I had had many discussions on our own regarding what sort of measures we wanted taken in the event of serious illness. During the period I was out of it (most of July 2008) she made all decisions regarding my care that needed to be made. She spent a considerable period of time talking with my doctors and nurses, pretty much daily. Even after I began to be more aware, she guarded me from knowing things that she knew would stress me. My cardiologist had told her that this was necessary, and that stress could kill me, but I believe she knew it instinctively on her own. And she read aloud to me, too, mostly from Quaker books about peace, which were favorite of mine. Sometimes I would appear to sleep as she read, but, if she stopped, I would ask her to continue.

She still helps me with decisions regarding my health care, which relieves my mind considerably. I love her for a multitude of reasons, one of which is that she takes good care of me and protects me, despite having had multiple sclerosis for more than 30 years herself.

2. what a wonderful person she is - a touching story. so glad that you're still here to show her you
love her for that compassion.

wow, what a battle you had! My brother has had MS and been declared dead on an ER table before, but a minute later came back and has had so much pain from his disease, but he's doing as good as can be expected now, and for a while, we didn't know how long we had him. These things are hard to deal with, and it's so very important that everyone have someone, a spouse, loved one, care giver, that cares for the person and their soul to be comforted to know someone is trying to help them through these things... I don't know people survive, but they do - it is inspiring!!!

God bless you for this story.

best...

10. Great video. Thank you Keith. I await a revolutionary few words from Palin, Limb, and Beck
announcing that they also believe that 'death panel' is not the right label for the process of communications within the family and with the medical advisors.

The per cent of the country that has gone through this would be offended to know that what they have gone through is now being called a death panel in a most derisive way for a political purpose.

Let's hope that this country smartens up and becomes more humane. C'mon Republicans, you can make this country better.
