In an attempt to justify her vote against overriding Governor Pawlenty's veto of General Assistance Medical Care, Representative Laura Brod (Republican, New Prague, MN)says government is not moral or compassionate, people are. Distributed by Tubemogul.

Conservatives are immoral.

8. Ayn Rand has got them
by the ass. This really took hold under Reagan. It's almost like an admission that from now on we are going to be cold and fascistic in nature.

3. We are the Government & General Welfare
The U.S. Constitution states "General Welfare" in both the Preamble and the Constitution itself. General Welfare? How can that be achieved without compassion of those within the Government by law? Does the redistribution of tax money not constitute compassion to build roads, schools and infrastructure for lesser areas?

The problem is we now have poorly experienced and educated elected officials and maybe unintentional shills for big corporations and the rich. Many elected officials are not compassionate and in the case of Bunning and Brod ignore the fate of the less fortunate.

5. She is basically right
Government is neither of those. It is not required to be. So you see, she does not have to be. And thats how she sleeps at night.

Government is not "moral or compassionate" - because she chooses not to/cannot be it. On that she is right.

14. Exactly.
Government is what you make it. And she is absolutely right that the people in it brings the morals and compassion. Or lack of same. Not government in itself.

Her argument is "You are not required to not be an asshole. So it is perfectly ok to be one.".

7. Maybe we should get rid of all the people in Government then.
And how does this square with laws protecting little fetuses? If government can't be moral, then why can it outlaw gay marriage? How can "it" do anything without the input of people? Does this mean that corporations must now be moral and compassionate? After all, they're "persons".

Is she nuts or was that the most pitiful excuse ever? It certainly made no sense. (so tell us why you REALLY voted against it, Deary)

regulating fetuses, too.

13. She would probably be the first to scream if the government that
pays her for her service as a representative went thoroughly immoral and refused to pay her salary or expenses or whatever she gets for her time and investment.

I have been wondering whether we shouldn't just ask our representatives and senators to work for minimum wage plus expenses for which they can show receipts.

How do you think that arrangement would change our government?

Would it fill up with rich people? Or would it begin to be more compassionate?
