A traditional Chilean song sung at the funerals of children, performed by the late Victor Jara, posted here in memory of the children lost in the earthquake
of February 27th.

Gloria dejo en memoria,
y estas razones aquí,
del que no llore por mí,
porque me quita la gloria.
Vos como maire Señora
pídele a Dios que te guarde
me voy con el alto paire
y a los reinados de Dios.
Digo con el corazón
y adiós mi querida maire.

Gloria yo le digo a Dios
y que conmigo sea bueno
porque también en el cielo
los hemos de ver los dos.
Y en este trance veloz
yo ya cumplí mi destino
purificao y divino
y en la gloria dentraré.
Y antes de irme diré
y adiós, adiós mundo indino.

Virgen de nos y parientes
yo a todos les digo adiós
ya mi plazo se cumplió
y conmigo la muerte.
Dichosas fueron mis suertes
mayor fue algún pesare,
yo me juro confesarme
ya voy, ya voy paire eterno,
ya me olvide del infierno
que sabe todos los males.

(One of Victor Jara's earliest memories was hearing his mother sing this song at the funerals of other working-class children, children who had usually died because their parents couldn't afford the medicine or other medical treatments which might otherwise have saved them).

1. Este cancion me hace triste....
and it brings back sad memories. My cousin Sergio was one of those children who died at the age of six of a ruptured appendix because his family was too poor to afford the operation. It was during the Great Depression that affected other countries besides ours.

2. That would've been during Victor's childhood.
He was born in the early 1930's.

And the point of reminding anyone of such pain is to create a future world without it.

In that, meaning can come from the sadness.

3. Chile has universal health care now.
It's still tiered by class but at least even the poorest can access health care when they need it for themselves and more importantly for their children.

4. I'm glad to hear that.
My comments were about that earlier age.

Has there been any evidence that there were differences in response time for quake victims that could be tied to class?

5. I don't think so.
I believe they went where they were needed. I haven't heard any complaints about that. It seems some of the places near the epi-center and tsunami destruction had a delayed responses but that seems to be more because of difficult access than anything else.
