Two West Springfield lawmakers want state welfare officials to stop housing homeless families in hotels and motels. State Sen. Stephen Buoniconti and state Rep. James Welch say the practice is ineffective and costs the state $36 million per year.

1. Maybe if the money was not sent to the top one percent, including foreclosures.
fewer of those people would be homeless? Did they mention that in the story?

Did they also include how much of their taxes subsidise bonuses by things like military contracts, and no bid contracts?

The whole perception is the money is going to support the lower income brackets, when much of earnings go to shareholders and to bonuses funneled through many programs.

2. Why don't they just rent them apartments? The money would go further.
I never got the hotel/motel housing thing either except as transitional housing until suitable family housing could be found.

4. in my area, section 8 housing is almost non-existant
And the section 8 that is out there are in poor communities, and then there is a waiting list to get into those apartments.

None of these communities want to address the problems of housing for the poor. They'd rather legislate the poor OUT of their communities. Atlanta does it. NY does it. Why should the elites have to deal with people *not* -their equals-.?

Social Justice is not an American value anymore.

5. Because "progressives" REFUSE to agitate for MORE public housing, that's why.
"Progressives" are fine with "increased use of shelters" as the news piece advocates. Nevermind the disease, poor nutrition, lack of safety, etc.

Which begs the question... WHY is there less of a need for police and fire if homeless people are jammed into shelters??? Hmmmmm?

Just a matter of getting the vermin out of sight.

3. I suppose these guys don't see a connection to the system that foots the bill
for hotel stays via our tax dollars for the rich, but they certainly do for the homeless. Gee why is there discrimination against the poor? Put the homeless back into their homes.

6. None of those things you advocate will happen until there is a strong public push for them.

8. I'm sure the homeless...
would rather have their own housing, but the lack thereof is the problem.

11. Doesn't matter where they go, as long as they are gone.
The message from all angles is "DIE!"

Homeless people are getting that message, and the suicide rate is rising.....

Does it matter?

12. we need solutions not bandaids
There is a growing number of homeless people and this problem is not going away.

If the rich don't like seeing the homeless people, maybe they should help find a solution like finding a way to put homeless people back into the homes that are now sitting empty because they were stolen through foreclosures and scummy bank deals.
