Hayworth poster child for what's wrong in politics. He lies about the Massachusetts marriage issue, Rachel calls him on it, and he says "we'll just have to agree to disagree." Rachel's befuddled because one's empirical, one's true, the other is not. Doesn't matter to Hayworth. He has his own facts.

5. No, she really didn't.
If you looked at it objectively you'll note he was unfazed. Questions that he wasn't interested in answering or really wouldn't even affect him in his run in Arizona such as "establishment of intimacy" he blew off as a difference of opinion. The rest, he was extremely well coached and managed to revert much of the relation onto her as though they are the same person or like minded. Therefore he managed the interview well even though he is a cheat. So no...she didn't hand him his ass unfortunately.

of JD Hayworth and don't really want to. But, right or wrong, he defended himself adroitly and made Rachel seem somewhat sophomoric (first time I've ever seen that). This is someone Rachel should probably stay away from. Sometime today I'll research Hayworth some more. He may be pure evil; I don't know. But as far as this confrontation with RM, Hayworth won, IMO.

14. I disagree.
I didn't watch much of the interview (had it on mute) other than the establishment of intimacy part. I know Hayworth because he was part of the 1994 takeover, and I worked on the Hill in 1996. He's a former tv sports reporter so he is comfortable on tv, so him keeping calm was understandable.

Let me also say, I think we need to get away from "who won" in these exchanges. It's just silly and who cares, and it's not important. As a journalist, she drew his views out for the world to see and ridicule (as well they should because he really is an idiot). What I saw was not a winner or loser here. What I saw was a person making a claim. A reporter showing that what the person said was not true, and the person saying it chalking it up to a difference of opinion. In the course of doing so, he looked like a liar because what he said was empirically untrue.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with someone about WMD in Iraq and Saddam's involvement with 9/11. I pointed out that searches for WMD yielded none. He didn't have any. I pointed out that searches for 9/11 connections were nil. He had none. This person chalked it up to a "difference of opinion" and how great it is we live in a country where we can disagree, yadda yadda yadda. I pointed out that this is a cop out and a non-sequiter, that not all opinions are equally valid. It may be my opinion that the earth is flat. I can tell someone who knows it's not that we just have a difference of opinion. However, I would look absurd.

I think Rachel did all this, but she did it implicitly. She showed that, no, the earth is round, and I can show empirically that it is (at least in this one area). In that regard, she gave Hayworth just enough rope to hang himself, which he did, when he continued to maintain his version of "it is my opinion the earth is flat and we will just have to agree to disagree."

20. quite right
one can have a difference of opinion, but one cannot pick and choose what fact is. One cannot credibly invent fact based upon the idea that one doesn't like what established fact presents.

27. You're right. Rachel did make her point 'he's lying about a legal standard' implicitly
The problem is she was so flushed and flustered a win-or-lose person wouldn't notice it. In this style over substance world, he looked prettier saying the earth is flat than she did in saying the earth was measured and its round.

It is one of the reasons I like watching/listening to her show because she puts actual facts with her opinions. I don't always agree with her but I do think I can trust the facts she is using.

Higher up the line of comments, a person said something about not knowing who this guy is. If you knew Scarborough before the TV show and during his House days, you had to have known this take America back/term limits J.D. guy. Hayworth is the epitomy of a slime bucket. He ran with J.D. Watts in the pro football line up. He can say the ABSOLUTE NASTIEST things with a smile. He is THE oily door to door salesmen selling sand as a cure all for all ills. If you research him, you will see what a louse he is.

15. What interview were you watching?
She quoted him mis-quoting the ruling on gay marriage by the MA supreme court and he kept calling it a 'difference of opinion'.

J.D. "The Sky is red!"

Rachel "No the sky is blue and here's the proof that it's blue."

J.D. "It's red. I guess we just have a difference of opinion."

23. Who won will largely depend on who watched
but since he's in a Republican race, and since Repukes probably don't watch Rachel much, I don't think the slimeball hurt, or helped himeslf much.

But, from an objective view, the guy came off like a smug liar, and Rachel cam off like she was surprised by his ability to shake of the truth like Neo shakes the dust of the Matrix from his long, black, coat.

8. I'll just reply to myself
I thought she handed him his ass on the "Establishment of intimacy" section of the interview.
He could only deny but not disprove the evidence Rachel presented to him about it. She proved him a liar.
Were there some parts of the interview that could have been a bit better. Sure.
All in all it wasn't a positive appearance for Hayworth.

11. I would have loved to have seen his response AFTER the
cameras were turned off. To some, he may have seemed calm and cool, but his face was like stone, so I think he was seething underneath. Body language is everything, and it was clear that he did not like the questions. I truly don't believe he knew anything about Rachel Maddow and how she has her facts straight. AND...I can bet she's not through with him yet. It would not be like Rachel to not produce more facts on a subsequent show. Keep watching.

3. Hayworth was well coached before going head to head w/Rachel...
The man is a legitimate moron; when I saw him last night, it was the only time I've ever seen him when he didn't fly off the handle. He spent almost his entire segment defending himself, and when essentially called a liar, all he could come up with was we disagree. Isn't that a GOP trait, disagree with the truth and empirical evidence?

McCain and Hayworth, the clueless and the witless...I used to live in AZ, and as far as their elected officials, they have it bad...:(

interested in entering into a marriage with a horse or other non-human being? They always say that's a danger. Shouldn't they check whether these people vote Republican or Democrat?

12. What a Creep is JD Hayworth
Yes I've resulted to name-calling. Hayworth is apparently the illegitimate child of a mixed marriage--a rampaging baboon (mother?) and a slug (father?).

Is he a worse choice than McCain? Both are regrettable in my opinion. This kind of candidate is essential to the informed, outdated, uncivilized, cloddish "Party of No" that consitute the Repugs.

24. Can you imagine how we folks living in Arizona feel......
.....having the likes of McCain and Hayworth to choose from? So does anybody have any idea who the democratic candidate for senate might be? While these two baboons beat the shit out of each other, the dems are not to be seen nor heard from. what a complete failure the democratic party is in this state.

I can't believe the candidates they put up! Is it the water they drink down there? Maybe there's a lot of lead in it.

I could see it coming from the beginning. Toward the end, he was grasping at straws. In the beginning he blew it off, as "a difference in opinion." As Bugs Bunny said, "What a maroon!"

21. Hayworth is pitiful!
Rachel DID give him enough rope to hang himself. From his 1st statement he is running on without taking a breath to get his obvious script out there. He doesn't look cool and calm.... he looks coached and desperate to get a bunch of split hairs out on air about a topic he knew would come up (and he'd have to explain away) Then he tries the usual tactic of butting in and talking over Rachel so she CAN'T get any info out there.... but she stops him dead in his tracks on that tactic.

And we haven't even gotten to the "your opinion" thing yet!

more in control of the interview than I expected......and now you'll see many other republicans who are well coached, use the camera, smile control the interview to what they want to talk about and use the same tactics.....and some it appears will secede....and make Rachel look almost amateurish.

Sorry, LaPera, but he just kept his cool as he stuck to his lying talking points. That isn't making someone else look "out of his league." By the way, I wish all of the Republicans would "secede."
