1. these parties with journalists
always creep me out a bit, even if they are funny.

i don't like the idea of politicians and hacks being friends. how can you hold your friend to account, which is meant to be the media's job?

2. You're forgetting Stephen Colbert's appearance at the Correspondents' Dinner...
I watched that all the way through three times... :D

3. yeah, that was a real exception
Edited on Thu Mar-18-10 03:11 AM by miscsoc
i suppose the redeeming feature of these things is that if someone has balls of iron like him, they can stand there and more or less call the most powerful man on the planet a killer through a thin veil of humour while he has to just sit there and squirm. the colbert thing was magnificent.

9. We watched his speech live, and then two repeats, couldn't get enough of it...
"Rearranging deck chairs on the Hindenburg!" :woohoo:

And you're right, that was the exception. I keep thinking of David Gregory boogieing with the likes of Karl Rove. x(

Welcome to DU, miscsoc! So glad to have you with us! :hi:

13. The weirdest thing happened after Colbert's appearance
It was completely ignored by the mainstream press for close to a week. Newspaper articles about the dinner mentioned only a comedic actor who got up and did an impersonation of W while he was talking. It was as though Colbert was never there. It wasn't until maybe a week later, when the video of his appearance was going viral, that the press had no choice but to acknowledge it.

24. I remember that, LOL.
All the reports were about the Bush* impersonator. I remember yelling at the TV... But Jon Stewart did mention it - a lot! :D

Daily KOS gets all the publicity, but we're much more user friendly... :hi:

Here's the clip of Rove and Gregory. Only look at it if your blood pressure's okay. We need you here on DU. Guess I'm fortunate that mine's borderline low... ;)

28. I watched that,
since you posted it. It's worse than I remember. Although I narrowly avoided cardiac arrest, I recommend this to all Obama-disillusioned lefties who've lost a sense of purpose. It really replenished my internal flames of hatred for those people, and I logged on to mention this as soon as I regained feeling in my left arm.

I can't help remembering this whenever I watch MTP, these days... The MSM is so much a part of the problem. x(

Hope you're feeling better! :hi:

6. people should really watch this again
Edited on Thu Mar-18-10 03:21 AM by miscsoc
i'm watching it just now, the total contempt colbert obviously feels for bush is palpable. it's beautiful and righteous and angry, and so superficially polite, as well. At least as good an example of finely tuned rhetoric as any of Obama's speeches.

16. Funnier when ad libbing
Used to work for Biden ages ago. I'm glad he hasn't lost his sense of humor. But his one-liners are a lot funnier when they're on-the-fly!

18. I'm sure he's on a short leash
I don't think he was kidding about Obama watching over his shoulder to make sure he "stayed on message". :) Scripted or unscripted, he's a funny, funny guy.

He zinged Fox news pretty good and even got Rahm.

I like Joe Biden so much better than the last VP - what was the name of that dick? Oh yeah his name was dick!

I miss seeing the spontaneous Joe that has been subdued since he became VP.

Welcome to DU! It must have been a real treat working for Joe.

27. Welcome to DU, bondwooley! I was thinking I bet some of these zingers
were actually Joe-isms that they incorporated into the script.

I agree with Pat, you can tell Joe thinks a lot harder and longer about his responses these days. It's painful for the Biden fans to see, but understandable. He's speaking FOR the WH now, not just for himself.
